Mariners Squad - 2019-2020

I’ve got no info on how things went down but let me pitch another possible angle:

CCM recognises he’s on the cusp of stepping up but is in a precarious situation after a terrible bunch of seasons and is wary of introducing another young player to our backline. They’re prepared to offer him a contract but it’s most likely as a squaddie. Glassock’s agent looks abroad and finds he can get a deal and most likely more senior minutes playing in a lesser Asian league that’s a step up on youth/npl2. Maybe better money too and it’s a change of scenery.

Club gives its blessing and says let’s keep in touch and see if we can get you back here in a year or two when we’ve stabilised our situation and he’s got minutes under his belt at a senior level.

Maybe that’s optimistic but it might be a better situation than dropping him in to a team that’s rebuilding or being 4th choice CB.
Pretty much nailed it.

I'm a Glassock fan BUT i was more impressed by Lewis the first time i saw him at training (and I didn't know who he was). I think Glassock will play in the HAL but i think the club have been smart. Staj said if a youth player shines at training he will play 1st grade.
Graham looked the business at training when he first got here.
Graham was a unit. A mistake to not promote within perhaps. But that mistake is on Mulvey if its on anyone.

Nick D'Agostino anyone?

Seems surplus to our needs with Simon, Murray and supposedly Majok although I'd take Nick over Majok. We've got a bunch of backup strikers but not one that would get a starting gig elsewhere, IMO that needs to be our priority if we're looking for forwards.

I'm hoping Staj has uncovered another Berisha in Eastern Europe, he alluded alot to the fact that Broich, Berisha etc were no names prior to coming, that to me almost seems as if he is priming us for a similar calibre signing announcement.

Kim, Asdrubal, Vernes were all visa layers with no names as well - Faty, Tavares, Cisse, McCormack all had names, and all turned out crap.

Id say the quality of our scouting has significantly more to do with whether the players have names, hopefully Staj's trip was fruitful.

Agreed, I think our scouts were actual scouts on a bob a job run

Oar
Shabow
Simon

2021 - (7)

Clisby
De Silva on loan to SFC until the end of this season
Gallifuoco
Murray
Pearce
Rowles
Tongyik

So our best currently announced and contracted team which we could use in a match today (minus De Silva) is now:

Pearce
Gallifuoco Tongyik Rowles Clisby
McGlinchey Melling
Shabow
Murray Simon Oar
Subs: Munford, Ruiz-Diaz, Miller, Vinci, Smylie

Obviously more players to be signed but those eight to come in need to be exceptional. Given that one will be this state league signing and one Majok, possibly even Ingham, that gives us five players to make a significant impact on the squad. One of these will be a keeper so that is four outfield players left to come in that will have to provide the quality.

Now remember we also have to improve on the losses of Hiariej, Karacan, Millar, O'Neill and Aspro who were our best players last season.

I know I am coming off negative today but we are in a massive world of hurt and there is every chance our squad will be weaker than last season.

Our only chance is to move players on.

I prefer to look at it another way. One will be a keeper that is better than Pearce or Kennedy, four will be visa players that have to contribute more in total than Cisse, McCormack, Tom and Jem did last year (not a terrible high bar) plus 2 or 3 squaddies. So essentially 5 better players to come in.

Interestingly they talked about 13 signed players yesterday but as per JP above I only have 12 (including DDS). If DDS is loaned out again we may be already be including Majok and/or Ingham and there will 7 or 8 on top of that.

You or JP haven't included Josh Nisbet who still has 12 months on an A League scholarship.

So are you saying Josh was on a 2 year scholarship, got promoted for part of the 2018/2019 and is now back to being a scholarship player or that he is now a full senior squad player for next season?

He signed a further 12 month scholarship before the end of the season.

Gallifuoco isn't a DR, right?

Wasn't Ingham signed by MM before he got punted but hasnt been announced yet?
I'd say not getting the spoon next season will be a massive achievement given the dead weight in the squad that can't be got rid of until next year.
Judas alone takes up the wage of a high quality AL player.
This won't be an easy fix

I'd say we can definitely do better than the spoon but will make it hard to be solid mid table contenders, will need smart buys and everyone firing. Between Judas who wasnt a first team player and IMO at least over paying for Simon we've handicapped ourselves given our limited means. Hopefully we move Hoole on and use his wage better as he seemed to be on more than a fringe player should be.
