he Central Coast Mariners are excited to announce the signing of exciting young defender Ruon Tongyik on a two year deal.

The 22 year old joins the Mariners after finishing the 2018/19 Hyundai A-League season with Brisbane Roar. Having previously plied his trade with Adelaide United, Melbourne City and Western Sydney Wanderers, Tongyik is looking to establish himself in the side and enjoy a long and successful career on the coast.

“I am delighted to be joining the Central Coast Mariners for the next two seasons. The Mariners have a proud history in the Hyundai A-League, and I’m looking forward to helping the club get back on top next season.

“I can’t wait to get working with Alen Stajcic as a boss. He has an excellent coaching record and reputation, and I truly believe I can develop as a player under him”.

Born in Sudan, Tongyik arrived in Australia in 2003 and played a part of Adelaide United’s youth system, involved in their NPL promotion and National Youth League Conference A Premiership. He has also three appearances under his belt in the Under 23 Australian national squad.

Head Coach Alen Stajcic is looking forward to the young defender to join his side.

“It’s really exciting to bring a young player like Ruon to the club.” Stajcic said.

“Over the past few years he has showed amazing potential to be a fantastic footballer and has a real drive to succeed. I’ve been watching him for a while, and I’m sure he will be a great contributor to our team on and off the field”.

5th club at age 22 - says everything.

Meanwhile, we couldn't even give Glassock a game

Tuned in for a minute but audio was hard to hear properly and seems a bit painful anyway. Will wait for the cliff notes. The Mcglinchey thing is pretty simple I thought, like Simon he’s got a season to go and with a limited budget we can’t afford to pay them out and replace them so whatever Staj thinks of them they’ll be there in some capacity as long as they aren’t a locker room cancer actively making things worse.

Got my Glassock question in. Fair enough answer of him playing more overseas but disagree he wasn't ready for the A-L. Was ready before Graham ever was.

I’ve got no info on how things went down but let me pitch another possible angle:

CCM recognises he’s on the cusp of stepping up but is in a precarious situation after a terrible bunch of seasons and is wary of introducing another young player to our backline. They’re prepared to offer him a contract but it’s most likely as a squaddie. Glassock’s agent looks abroad and finds he can get a deal and most likely more senior minutes playing in a lesser Asian league that’s a step up on youth/npl2. Maybe better money too and it’s a change of scenery.

Club gives its blessing and says let’s keep in touch and see if we can get you back here in a year or two when we’ve stabilised our situation and he’s got minutes under his belt at a senior level.

Maybe that’s optimistic but it might be a better situation than dropping him in to a team that’s rebuilding or being 4th choice CB.

So I wasn’t far off the mark on the explanation Staj gave. Not confident on bringing him in and getting minutes, better to move to a league where he is likely to get that time and grow rather than being stuck in limbo as a squaddie or youth league player. Club apparently helped it happen.

Well.....I guess it's now safe to say that's not the reason.........

Read the post above yours, they explained the reasoning that they didn’t think he was ready for regular minutes so yes they were wary of introducing a 19 year old in to our backline. Regardless of what any of us think of Tongyik he’s a couple of years older and has had A league experience. I’m still not expecting a CB pairing of him and Rowles - that would be a risky setup but he adds depth and might keep Rowles on his toes.

That pretty spot on. Staj didn't think Glassock is up to HAL level yet. He wants him to grow as a person and a player. Apparently the club worked hard to get Michael an overseas contract. If that's true then that is good management

I'm a Glassock fan BUT i was more impressed by Lewis the first time i saw him at training (and I didn't know who he was). I think Glassock will play in the HAL but i think the club have been smart. Staj said if a youth player shines at training he will play 1st grade.
Graham looked the business at training when he first got here.

Was impressed with one particular answer where he said we would sign 20 maybe 21 players and maybe could go to 23... Indicating he would prefer quality over numbers...

Also said they had a quality youth player currently doing his medical which he expects him to pass and so an announcement in the next few days...
