What does it say?

Shame as was just starting to acclimatise and while he fouled alot he had mungrel and cared

Just thanking the club and fans.
“Enjoyed my time on the coast” is the most telling part.
Not something you post if you have intentions of staying. I hope I’m wrong but yeah.
Guarantee he’ll end up at Sydney once either brilliante or o’neil go overseas. They’ll ditch their Dutch CB to fit him in the visa spot and he’ll kill it with them.

Yep, he'll do well there. He'll be able to foul and abuse the ref knowing full well he won't get sent off.
Brosque will give him a few pointers.

And now for an unpopular opinion ...As much as I like Jem (and Tom for that matter) I think we should only retain them if we can't find better. That goes for all our visa players. We need to find McGlinchey a new home (loan to Balzan?).

Tom in particular is a favourite of mine since the first time I saw him in pre-season. However, this season was not his best. I'm sure that while there was tension with Mulvey there also were real injuries. If he does stay I really hope that we have a bit of stability with our S & C staff and that he regains his proper fitness and form.

The 4 players i wanted to keep were Tom, Jem, Pain and Aspro. Obviously there are better visa players available but we only pay peanuts so Tom and Jem would both be solid retention.

Not easy replacing players of Jem and Tom’s calibre let alone finding better ones. Seems like a load of unnecessary work to me.

There’s obviously a lot we can’t know in terms of wages, other offers and injuries so hard to truly judge. But boy do we always seem intent to do things the hard way.

Absolutely. Cost/benefit. They honestly are probably taking unders and provide a known quantity.
It would be nice for the FFA and fox to stop rigging the league and allow other clubs to sign high quality foreigners.

Ross was easily our most disappointing signing considering his pedigree and how excited we all got.
Amazing what a f**king horrendous attitude can do to a career.
There's that, though MM playing him in the wrong position doesn't help. But yes, he really hurt us.As did Asdrubal the season before. We've had expensive, overseas players just come in and stuff us up too often. The club really needs to assess how this has happened - how these players have ended up causing more harm than good.

Jem, I think would be an asset - but he has GOT to get his temper in check.

We're always going to be thin on the roster; a key player likely to cop a couple of suspensions is going to cause more harm than good. We just aren't going to have that much depth. So we NEED our team to be disciplined. I got shot down in flames last time I made that comment so I expect the negative ratings will stack up again. If he was here for a full season he'd probably be our highest carded player http://www.ultimatealeague.com/records.php?type=pb&season=2018-19 - and Jem isn't the only player with a high tally.

BUT, in all fairness, I suspect it might be due to getting beat every week. After the City game he was truly cut up about the result. So it might be the same reason Simon kept copping the cards. Whatever it is, I think we NEED to work on discipline next year.

Though if we had Jem at the start of the season, I honestly think we may have avoided the spoon. I'd love to see what he's capable of in a team that's doing reasonably well. I expect if he goes to SFC or MV he'll tear us to shreds. He'll 'do a Wales'

Tom H........if his constant injury concerns are legitimate then I'm actually wondering if we really should re-sign him. He could also end up being too much of a liability. Though I also have no faith in our S&C team.

I've mentioned before that I watch lower league English football & kicking the ball away happens all the time.
Really someone should have pointed out to Jem that you can't get away with it here.
But let's not forget the player I called an "ill disciplined idiot" to the bloke I go with got the medal last night.
Looking at that list Cap'n. I would have sworn O'Neill got sent off twice.
And Bautheac topping the list! He did seem to have the shit kicked out of him in some of the games I watched.

Wow, that almost sounds like you don’t think investing 1.6 million in Honda was good for the league as a whole?

The number of newbies who joined to watch Honda must be in the tens of.... Well probably at least 10 people.

Marquee star factor hasn’t worked for years imo. If it ever has. Wonder how Fury would have gone if they spent Fowlers money on bolstering the club. His signing probably helped everyone else more than them. Rotate the 3 mill between clubs - maybe 1.5 to 2, or 1 mill to 3 different clubs each year is the only fair scenario.

But personally I’d rather they spent the money subsidising clubs to support youth discovery and development supported by bringing in a quota of young Australian players that must be in any HAL starting side.

Or I’d take just making our referees better as that would go along way to improving the quality of their product and be a much better use of funds.

Our other codes don’t need foreign names to have passionate successful leagues. They focus on and market the stand outs of their own game/league. Really we need to just focus on making the competition itself as great as possible.

There is some value in marquees, but it’s mainly just a bit of free press and helps FOX know who to put in their spots. But we’re not going to get anywhere worth getting long term with little bursts of publicity about over hyped players now past their prime.

We’re not geared like the US when it comes to marketing, hype or investment, and we’re only going to continue to fall behind Asia when it comes to buying power. We’re never going to be a rich league. Population is too small and our market place too divided by the other codes.

So what will be our football identity moving forward? Who do we want to be as a footballing nation? Where are we trying to get to?

I don’t think they have any idea at present.

I think our lack of discipline is several things.

Frustration at not being good enough.

Suffering from bigger club bias of referees.

Lack of leadership.

Lack of passion/belief in multiple players. (That triggers others to go too far to try and inspire more from them)

Being dissed by FOX and the press relentlessly.

But those are not excuses. As you say, we must be better disciplined. In fact given the above. It’s a very good argument to say we need to be the most disciplined/impeccable team in the league. We have no margin for error. Given we lack depth to replace players, quality to begin with, and decisions and opinions always go against us.

Both jaded and super cynical. I believe the salary cap is wasted because it’s subverted so significantly. I’m a believer in salary capped leagues. To make it work fairly you need equalisers like luxury taxes etc as in US Sport. Melbourne and Sydney have a natural advantage in population and appeal so feeding them extra $$ is utter BS.
Fans turn for entertainment and 1 player doesn’t really change that. FFA need competitive teams to attract bums on seats and eyes on screens.
FFA will have to broaden its sponsorship and tv base so fox can’t keep squirrel gripping them. And I believe some sponsors are leaving because of the board change but that 1 has Optus links... opportunity.?
As a club though we also need to be both more caring about our yoof and more ruthless about the realities of our squad. I follow mlb heavily and if a team is going nowhere, has not much salary space but has players to trade they do. They do it for prospects and wiggle room. So why aren’t we thinking out of the box to try and grab some quality yoof? Pain was never staying so we should have looked at that as club and tried to trade him if we couldn’t sell him. The other side is if we moved pain on we have a spot for a youth player to get games into them. I can cop losses in a shit of a season if it shows a plan for next. But we now have no plans and nothing to show for either seeing pain off or blooding yoof. Sorry Painy you are my fave of the last few years, it’s just you are my most obvious player of significant value.
Ramble over.

The problem is the 95% of the Yoof players are simply not good enough for the A League.

They probably are if introduced one at a time in a semi-successful or successful environment with 10 decent players around them to ease them in.
Elvis is looking ok at Victory and a few other younger ones looking ok.
But the youth system as stated in many articles at the moment is so far behind other countries.
My cousin pays to be in Spain in an international academy and they compete in 6th tier Spanish league. However they still have the option to train 3 times a day!
Now he doesn’t have to that, that’s his choice but he has already had a trial with a third tier Spanish team which would still be a few steps down from A-League quality but they nurture and let them work their way up slowly and focus solely on football and learn the game inside out.

Looks like all the Acadamy coaches are being ‘restructured’ to make more finances available for the first team. Looks like we might be joining every other club in the way we do things and chase some first team success, if we can land the players that is.

Should have brought in Staj earlier and flown in some players to check out Terrigal when it was warmer weather.

Personally I think NYL could be great but is a ridiculous pretend league at the moment. Even 30 games in a season for NPL is still not enough. HAL at 27 games is pathetic .

38 games. Triple headers, HAL, WL, NYL. Ultimately second divisions and pro rel. I’d really love to see it where like in Italy you can feasibly be a non professional team and make it all the way to serie A. But obviously will never happen.

But regardless, we need to be able to get our youth into year round full time professional set ups as early as possible. And then our professional league needs to match the length of the other professional leagues. 38 odd games a year. Plus cup games etc.

Until this happens I don’t see how we can ever reach our potential as a footballing nation.

I am hearing that Pearce has been given another year and Rowles two years, which I am ok with, provided Staj is looking to bring in a quality starting keeper and CB (possibly visa players).

Now just waiting to hear that Hoole has been released.....:headbounce:
