Mariners Preseason 2019

Said it a few times, how nice to have a normal professional pre season happening. Shouldn’t need to be said, but anyway.
City will be a good test.
Someone said the tassie friendlies are getting streamed? Any truth to that?
Agreed. Not just that but Staj definitely seems to have a better idea of how to try out different formations and positions in preseason. Under MM we were a completely different team every match...even every half. While things need to be tested, changing it up too drastically every time means you can't tell which parts of one match worked and which don't - which is why in Rd 1 we looked like we had never played together. Under Staj, you feel like the changes are actually part of progression towards something.

It's nice to feel some optimism for the forth coming season because of hard work, tactics, planning etc and not just because it is a new season and we hope to do better because the only way is up. I don't think we will be world beaters however will return some respectability to the Club this season. I'm excited that Staj may find a few gems in the young blokes this season especially the likes of Silvera who I hope can remian injury free. With Staj signed long term we could be genuine contenders by year three.

100%
Silvera really does look the goods so early on. And wasn’t it nice that even as disjointed and make shift our back 4 ( fox and Ziggy never knew each other existed the week before) was against Roar we didn’t get absolutely spanked like the last few seasons. And while we lack an excellent top visa/local CB I feel like we’ll have the structure to get by. Signing everyone so early is a massive plus especially with a manager with abit about himself.

Gaps in the HAL are not so vast as some leagues. I think if we’re decent year this year, and next year can keep our best talent and replace Weemac and Simon with quality, then there’s no reason under Staj we couldn’t challenge.

That said, Staj will be, and should be, trying to challenge this year - even though it’s unlikely and just finishing in the six would be a success.

Also I’m pleased they’re going away to Tassie together. Can’t over estimate how important it is to bond before season proper. If the trip is managed well, and another win in the FFA cup, could really help everyone come together.

Then to top it off we need at least 2 games at home to get the crowd warmed up
and for the active support to get match day organised.

Still up in the air re: streaming. More likely to get answer if talking to South Hobart direct via twitter/facebook, as I'm still unsure.

Not expecting much from our City game today. Theres a pic with the lineup in the members group but I'm not typing it out. Lots of missing players, a couple of trialists and younger players. Not going to do much for our FFA cup prep.

So did we basically trade Birighitti for Gauci? while i feel we got the better end of that deal for now, how long until Gauci becomes the next big GK just to spite us?

Im actually very impressed by the youth recruitment this year. The 2 boys trialling today seem to have a good junior pedigree with an obscure pathway to us, which can unearth a gem that the other systems aren't looking for.

No you’re right. That’s clearly our second string side. Plus getting some more minutes into Duric and Kim.

Rowles and DDS are away with under 23’s right? Was Silvera selected too, I’ve forgotten?

Smart use of our squad. Give the older guys and those more prone to injury a rest from travel and have a look at some of the younger guys.

Also don’t show City our hand.

Don’t expect a result out of this match.

Also I believe that we are about to start a Tassie road trip, so rotating squad members would play a major part in todays lineup as well.

Surely it would be most beneficial to field a strong team against another A league side and more experimental/seconds team against the Tassie teams who aren't at AL level. But I'll keep the faith in Staj and it does give him a good chance to see some of our non-core players against an A league side at close to full strength - they had some regular starters benched too but not to the degree we did..
