Im actually very impressed by the youth recruitment this year. The 2 boys trialling today seem to have a good junior pedigree with an obscure pathway to us, which can unearth a gem that the other systems aren't looking for.

Yeah me too. Silvera imo is the best young player we’ve had since Tommy.

Surely it would be most beneficial to field a strong team against another A league side and more experimental/seconds team against the Tassie teams who aren't at AL level. But I'll keep the faith in Staj and it does give him a good chance to see some of our non-core players against an A league side at close to full strength - they had some regular starters benched too but not to the degree we did..

All depends on how fresh everyone is like Mick said. They’ll be doing everything geared around being optimal for the FFA quarter. Which is great.

Pre-Season Friendly: Melbourne City 2 - 0 Central Coast Mariners

A strong Melbourne City side prevailed against the Central Coast Mariners in a behind closed doors friendly in Melbourne on Wednesday thanks to first half goals from Florin Berengeur and Remy Najjarine.

THE RUN DOWN

Wednesday’s meeting provided a chance for Alen Stajcic to put some minutes in the legs of those who didn’t play in last week’s FFA Cup thriller, and it was a very different Mariners side that took to the park.

The opening exchanges were a cagey affair, and Adam Pearce did well in the Mariners’ goal to save some on-target efforts from City’s forward line.

Dylan Ruiz-Diaz looked threatening up front and produced the first strong chance of the game for the Mariners, unleashing an effort from the edge of the area that was tipped over the bar by Dean Bouzanis in the City goal.

Pearce made another excellent save from Najjarine but the hosts took the lead from a corner that followed as Berenguer fired home, and Najjarine scored from just inside the 18-yard box moments later.

The second half was a more subdued affair with little of note happening at either end, and the outing finished with City ahead 2-0.

The Mariners attention now turns towards the pre-season trip to Tasmania this weekend, and a big FFA Cup meeting with Hume City on Tuesday, 17th September at ABD Stadium.

GOALS

37’ BERENGEUR (1-0): Florin Berengeur exchanged passes before finishing with a half-volley from in front of goal to put the hosts into the lead.

42’ NAJARRINE (2-0): Shortly after going ahead, Ramy Najjarine got on the end of a cross to score from just inside the 18-yard box.

Yeah on the face of it, without knowing anything from the match, it’s an alright result with basically our youth boys on show which is a great sign that Staj trusts them.
Minutes in Kim, Duric and Fox which is great.
Bad result from a strong city team, why didn’t they pump a bunch of youth players with Pearce in goal...

Joe Gauci, City’s back-up GK today? He’s apparently landed on his feet for a player not highly regarded by some on this forum... (if it’s the ex-CCM GK and not a random namesake...)

Once Pearce was re-signed his days were numbered. Neither good enough to start but both ok as backups. City had the opposite problem. Bouzanis and Birighitti both starting keepers. Win-win for both clubs.

So why haven't we signed Ruiz Diaz if he's so good and get's so much attention? We trying to sell him off or something?
Seems the promotional team is right behind him only player who gets his pic and a mention in yesterday's writeup!!! Obviously no other clubs are interested.

I presumed he was on a contract of some sort.
But having checked here https://www.ccmariners.com.au/teams#!/y-league
he isn't mentioned.

He was an Academy player this season and presumably will be part of the NYL team (if there is a NYL)

but the second one some of the marking wasn't up to much.
First goal was a decent effort but we had our chances to interrupt it, happens sometimes. Second one keeper shouldn't have made the pass to a man under pressure to begin with and the defender should have booted it immediately. Marking might have come in to it but you shouldn't have to be marking in that situation unless someone does something stupid.

That second goal was peak Okon defending. Trying to play out from back, cough up ball and then don’t track runners.

The match against Tasmania on Sunday will be live-streamed!

Unsure whether it will be via the South Hobart, or Football Tasmania FB/Youtube channels at this stage, but it will be one of those two. I'll try to get on here beforehand with a link, but if I don't, it will definitely be advertised on Football Tasmania's social media, or my Twitter (@haulpunt) so hope you can all tune in!

*Unsure of Tuesday night's match, but I am assuming it's a yes.
