Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Mariners Preseason 2019

No need to interfere with the way the game works, just would be nice from a stats perspective to see some distinction made. Looking at the 18/19 stats Krishna had 19, ALF 18, Toivonen, Keogh and Barbaouses on 15. I know Krisha took a bunch of them and eventually stopped because his conversion rate wasnt amazing, pretty sure ALF had his share but I couldn't tell you how many of the last 3 were from the spot. If it's only 1 or 2 (or none) compared to 5+ for others who had penalty duty that's very impressive and should be easy to identify.

Why not make the fouled player take the pen?
Don't see any reason for that. The fouled player may not have been the one about to shoot. Heck, the fouled player may not even have had the ball. Why force the non-goalscorer to take the shot when, even if they had the ball, they may have been trying to get it to the goalscorer?
Also, easy to get around that rule with a sudden 'cramp'.

I agree that it would be good if they were separated from a goalscorer's tally....though if we're going to do that, may as well have a 3rd category for free kicks. Which wouldn't be a bad thing - goals scored total, then broken down into open play, free kicks, penalty kicks.

This isn't specific to Matty, CCM or even the A league but I'm not a fan of recognising penalties in a goal scorers tally, no doubt they need to be able to put them away but at a glance I think it undermines the contribution of goals from open play or set pieces. Give me the forward that's scored 9 but not taken a penalty over the guy that's scored 12 with 6 from the spot. At least with tap ins there's an assist to the other players name but with a penalty the only involvement you might have is stepping up for the shot.

I couldn't agree more, one thing worth bearing in mind though, is the trouble we've historically had, converting penalties... Off the top of my head, I actually think Matty is the first player since... Well... Before the championship season, who has consistently been able to convert pens... Macca had notorious issues with it as well.
So... If we don't have any single player who can consistently score from open play anyway, perhaps it's worth having the one who can score from pens in play, so-to-speak...
I'm not saying that Matty should be a guaranteed starter as such, I guess my view is that while I think there's hope in Muzzah, he's got a ways to go and I'm not sure that overall he's much better of a player at this point, so much as he's providing a glimmer of hope in a bleak-looking space.
So I'm much more worried about us not signing a visa striker, than I am about whether Matty or Muzzah is our starting striker...

I'm not really a fan of Matty taking the penalties. Last season he took one against the Nix and scored.
Next one he hit in exactly the same place. Just lucky the Melbourne City keeper couldn't hold it and he scored from the rebound.
Would be nice if stats showed how many of the players goals were penalties though.
Somewhere some geek has got an excel spreadsheet with all that info going back all through the A league.

1 more sleep until our next FFA outing. Is Fox eligible to play in the FFA cup tomorrow? Anyone know his injury status?

I wouldnt be surprised. Some European clubs research and keep stats on penalty takers' preferred placement of shots. (Very useful for a keeper to bone up on especially if it comes down to a shoot out). If we have only one penalty taker (MS) any pattern he has for placement will become obvious and countered. I haven't been looking for a pattern; lets hope he is mixing them up.

At least Matty picked a different spot for his kicks last night.

The England goalkeeper had all the penalty takers preferences written on his drink bottle for penalty shoot outs during the world cup

Been thinking about this actually - to be fair it'd probably be valuable to know who won the pen in this first place too... I'd probably argue that a pen is worth more as a measure of the player if he won it in the first place.
Not too sure about this. My son went to a clinic run by a South American some years ago and it advertised teaching "How to win penalties" among other things. Took him out when I saw that. It suggests milking/diving/misleading the officials/cheating. Also there are other variables in the awarding of a pen, like the official and poor decisions made by defenders. I agree that when an attacker who gets into a threatening position and that triggers those rash decisions then they have done well, but I think there are other factors too.

It doesn't have to be simulation, there's a real art to being able to draw a player in to fouling you. Things like how you position your body and hold the ball are quite important and so is knowing when to go to ground. If you can just stay upright but your scoring opportunity has been ruined by a foul that wasn't called you're worse off, a good striker needs to know when to take the hit to force a decision. Might not always go your way and the degree you take it to is important but you'll be better off than the guy who always keeps his feet and loses his shot.

Bit of travelling for the team over the next few weeks. Melbourne City away this week, 4 days in Tasmania next week then Hume City in the FFA Cup the week after.
This time last year we had the Bolt circus.
What a difference 12 months (and a real coach) makes.

Said it a few times, how nice to have a normal professional pre season happening. Shouldn’t need to be said, but anyway.
City will be a good test.
Someone said the tassie friendlies are getting streamed? Any truth to that?
