Pink Lady or anyone, don’t suppose you have possession stats or even just shot attempts at all?

No great surprise we copped two with that backline.

Did Silvera and DDS play?

Yeah Matty starting every trial or FFA cup match is genuinely concerning.
What we could have written off as resting players is definitely getting more concerning now, but at the same time surely Staj can see what the rest of us see. We’ve also given Shabow a bit of time lately and I would have thought he’d be lower on the pecking order than weemac who showed some form previously.
I don’t think I’ve seen our best XI at the time start any match so far. I’m going to write it off as rotation and part of preseason but it can’t be ideal for next week.

Silvera and DDS were the standouts in the preseason games I’ve seen. Hoping they got minutes today.

Wanderers first goal was well taken but there was no glaring defensive error , second one Ziggy got caught out by a quick throw after falling on his backside. Didn’t look like we were being carved apart at least.

While im just as concerned about Matty starting all these pre season games, it leaves me wondering what Staj sees at training, and i feel like Staj has an idea in his head that he wants to make a reality, maybe Simon is a big part of that idea, either way i feel confident enough in Staj to accept it as it is and wait and see how things turn out.

Shaun did say that we could expect another visa player coming in - the EFL and European window doesn't close until 2 September so maybe players are waiting to see what offers exist and if coming here, will wait

If he is we're in trouble.Even if we didnt recruit another player it should be obvious from his efforts so far and last year that he shouldn't be our go to striker. I'm very keen to see us test our strongest XI and get some cohesion going but that's just a result of how many times we've been burned before. I trust the process even if it scares me watching it.

I do wonder - out loud now - whether starting Simon all this time is more about man management. Staj needs to manage Simon's self-belief and morale.
If Staj intends to bring in a visa striker you could see Simon understanding the need to play second fiddle to that striker. However, playing second fiddle to a recent NPL player, and not starting as Captain, might get under Simon's skin.

If we are getting a visa striker than there is no need to ruffle his feathers as he'll understand when there is a player classes above him taking *his* spot.

If we are not...well, I hope Murray etc. get their shot to start at 9 during the season.

It could be that in Staj's preferred 4141 formation, he wants/needs a big strong lump up top to simply hold the ball up and help make space for the midfield 4 coming through and we may be relying on goals from midfield, while Simon runs interference and keeps defenders on their toes, so far as harassing defenders go, Simon has to be up there as one of the most tenacious, and its mighty great watching him be a nuisance.

Be happy enough with that if it works!

Yeah maybe.

Occam’s razor though says it’s most likely just that Staj thinks Matty is currently the best striker we have.

(f**k that Occam guy)

He has a proven track record at this level, got more than twice as many goals as Murray last season, was the captain when Staj came, is a coast legend, and always works hard.

On that alone you could see why he thinks the number one spot is his to lose still.

Maybe he’s also outshining Murray and Majok at training...But in the games I’ve seen he sure isn’t.

Anyway, Im not interested in ragging on Matty. I’ve said my piece on him before, but bottom line, I just don’t see him being able to score enough goals for us this year.

So maybe a visa striker is the most important signing we can make if he’s always going to be selected over Murray and Majok.

This isn't specific to Matty, CCM or even the A league but I'm not a fan of recognising penalties in a goal scorers tally, no doubt they need to be able to put them away but at a glance I think it undermines the contribution of goals from open play or set pieces. Give me the forward that's scored 9 but not taken a penalty over the guy that's scored 12 with 6 from the spot. At least with tap ins there's an assist to the other players name but with a penalty the only involvement you might have is stepping up for the shot.

Important skill. But thoroughly agree.

I like it when it’s someone like Mile. Because there’s no second guessing about which player just wants to add to their goal tally and stats more - which is always the case with attacking (and egotistical) players.

As someone who has only missed (both saved) two penalties in the last decade, and have relied on them for golden boots, I totally disagree.

Why not lobby for the fouled player to be credited with the assist...

Why not the defender? Seriously though I'd be happy enough if it was made clearer and easier to look up. I went to look up Matty's ones in a previous striker discussion and it was a manual process and there's no way I'd want to do that for a bunch of strikers across the league or for any potential signing. If for example someone has 12 goals 3 of which were penalties listing as 12 (3) would make it instantly clearer if you're looking at a golden boot leaderboard or trying to compare players.
