For mine, Sydney did have the best of the match, and in all fairness probably deserved a result, but Danny was on song again, which was was bloody nice to see and he deserves the bulk of credit for the game being a draw imo.
Nevertheless we battled well and it was mainly our lack of ability to create and get forward that gave Bling the overall edge. Matty and Dylan were naturally missed, but this can also be put down to what looks to me at least to be a quite well drilled Bling outfit this year. New Coach is an improvement. For mine they didn't quite reek of the same arrogance and with Kofi Danning and others aggressively tracking back, they really left very little space or time in the middle of the park for much of the game.
My two cents on performances and trialists - (largely in agreement with MarinerMick)
DANNY: Looked great tonight! Made three very high quality saves.
HUKE: Was not in tonight and unfortunately is going to be out for a further three months. (was going to post this in the squad section but as you asked UnitedNo9) Knee injury. It's a blow, but he should return this season albeit 7 or 8 rounds in.
BOOGS, solid as usual, but also looking like he is still growing in his role in my opinion, which is great news - though he made a couple of blunders tonight.
DOIG: Hearing him screaming and swearing at our players bought me no end of joy!!! Sweet hard man at the back music to my ears. Defended solidly, strong, good decision maker and leader. He will be real asset to our defence this year.
WILKO: Excellent game by and large, and for mine notably louder and stronger in voice. It could just have been to get over Doig
but it was a welcome addition to our Captains game.
HEFF: Hahaha, watching Heff molest Shannon Cole and then grab him and rag doll him to the ground was my funniest moment of the match. The following bling outrage was also pretty hilarious. At LB he had a genuine handful in Kofi Danning tonight and he played well. ''
CACERES: Clearly deserves his starting spot in my opinion, but does requires a little more creative support, be nice to have someone gifted in this aspect of the game in the squad who can play him more consistently into dangerous positions. (Travis perhaps?) Nice watching him skin midfielders... but LOOOOVE watching him run at defenders!
HUTCH: A quality game as a holding midfielder. It's not a glamourous role, but he played it very consistently tonight I thought.
PEDJ: Solid tonight, nothing more, nothing less.
GARY WALES: My personal CCM man of the match. As Mick said, his work rate was exceptional, and looked natural to him, not like he was just giving his all for a contract, but that his natural game is to play at high tempo. Love it! We need this Murdocca like work rate in our midfield. Will be a terrific signing, can't see them not signing him now.
NICKY TRAVIS: 10 minutes but a genuine impact. Great distribution, and real confidence on the ball. Doesn't panic when put under pressure and feel the need to immediately play back, but instead seems to have the ability to keep his head up, send a pin point long ball and pick someone out upfront. And can skin a player or two as well. An exciting signing imo.
The KOREAN GUMPS: Watching the shaggy black haired Korean run on in Gumps jersey to cries of the Cove yelling, "Oi Gumprecht! Take of the Wig! Was worth trialling him for alone. However he did not have a great 20 minutes and simply did not look like a mature player. BUT... he has speeeeed and decent footwork which is nice and some more flair outside of Caceres would be nice. That said 20 minutes, indeed 90 minutes is not enough to judge anyone accurately though as everyone has shockers. His wasn't exactly a shocker, but it wasn't quality either. The plus side is that I would rather make a signing of someone with some raw ability and speed, and help teach him maturity and improve his decision making than sign another rapidly slowing player who at their best could never be anything more than a solid squad member. Lawrie does seem to have a gift for mentoring players with talent into real quality and the Korean probably has the physical skills, just depends on whether he has the heart and ability to grow.
LUJIC: Looked awkward. Lacking the pace to make an impact as lone striker or the strength to rival either Nick, Matt or Dylan as a hold up man. If he's a striker, I just can't see a place for him, I'd rather stick Kwassy up front again frankly.
Speaking of which....
KWASSY: Came off the bench tonight, solid, but sadly no brilliant flashes. Though he still managed to send one attempted cross into the waaaaayyy distant river... god bless his heart ;D
ELRICH: Looks fit which is good and clearly wanted to be involved more, but never got a lot of opportunity, not sure how they are using him? Or how he is placing himself as he often drifted inside and wasn't playing with enough width to get much time on the ball. Drifted wider second half, bit more ball, few runs, but no real adventure and then subbed off.
Overall, I'd say with our Doig reinforced back line, Nicky Travis and Gary Wales - and once our main strikers are back in - we will be looking in pretty solid competitive shape which is great.
I'm still not honestly sure that we can hope to challenge for honours this year, I'd have to say that unless Travis is even better than he looked, we are probably at this point still missing one key signing. We need our Fred, Hernandez or Miller in the mids. Otherwise, a striker of the quality that I think our money can't buy :'(
A new sponsor who wants to throw their bucks into buying us a marquee and I think we could consider ourselves genuine contenders. Otherwise, unless Matty moves up yet another hemisphere, I'm not sure we will have what it takes in the final third. But, (provided we sign wales and Travis) one key signing short is certainly much better than three or four.
I believe the squad is in considerably better shape than when we headed into the ACL, and we still have five weeks. Come on you MARINERS!
