Hawkes Bay hosts Phoenix clash with Aussies
Saturday, August 20, 2011

Wellington Phoenix player Tony Lochhead, who hails from Te Puna, will take the field during the club's transtasman clash against Central Coast Mariners at Baypark next month.

Bay football fans are being given the chance to get up close and personal with some of their sporting idols when the Wellington Phoenix Football Club takes to Baypark's field next month.

It will be the Wellington Phoenix's first appearance at Baypark Stadium in a pre-season transtasman clash against the Central Coast Mariners from New South Wales on Sunday, September 25.

The Phoenix are bringing a full strength squad to Baypark, including a number of current All Whites including Tim Brown, Ben Sigmund, Leo Bertos and Mark Paston.

Tony Lochhead, who hails from Te Puna, will also be making the trip.

The Central Coast Mariners are traditionally a strong team who have featured in two grand finals, including last year's thriller against the Brisbane Roar.

Tauranga City Venues Ltd general manager Ervin McSweeney said the fixture was expected to turn Baypark yellow, attracting thousands of the Phoenix's fanatical fans and a special atmosphere to the venue.

"The Phoenix have a very strong following here in the Bay. With nearly 5000 youth playing football in the region and a 3pm kick-off, it will be a great family day out," he said.

Mr McSweeney said the Phoenix were known for their fantastic engagement with younger fans, so he urged schoolchildren from throughout the region to attend so they could see their sporting idols.

Phoenix chief executive Nathan Greenham said the match was important preparation in the Phoenix's pre-season build-up to the Hyundai A-League 2011-12 season, which kicks off in October.

"It's also a fantastic opportunity for us to take the team on the road to other parts of the country and meet supporters from outside the team's home in Wellington," Mr Greenham said.

Match tickets ago on sale on Thursday, August 25, and will be available through TicketDirect at Baypark, Baycourt or by calling 0800 4ticket.

The Phoenix will also run a community engagement event during their stay, with schoolchildren from throughout the region invited to attend.

Just been reading that Kewell may miss the Mariners V Melbourne Victory game at home on Nov. 12 (Due to Socceroos duty). Now I don't really care that Kewell is not there, its probably better for the Mariners chances of winning. But from a crowd point of view it is a little worrying.

When all the fairweather fans hear the news they will probably stay home and not come along for a look. Getting a 13-15K crowd, because Kewell is coming would be fantastic result for the club and AL and might bring back a few who have stayed away over the last two seasons.

I also read that the Gold Coast are in line to miss Kewell due to Socceroos duty. Does anyone think the FFA may have placed CCM and GC V Melbourne Victory during socceroos weekends because we are considered the least important clubs?

Just want this season to start.

It took them a long time to redo the draw.

If the FFA was going to do anything, they would suggest to holger he leaves kewell out of the squad for the october match.

Not that kewell would likely be in it since he is too unfit now, and wont have played a competitive game before that match.

I heard talk on syd radio this morning that they are looking at moving the Bling/Tards match as both clubs would be without their Marquee players... and everyone wants to see Kewell Vs Emmerton

Mariners eye September standard step-up

Central Coast Mariners will look to win over fans far and wide during their 2011/12 Hyundai A-League pre-season campaign, commencing with a clash against Bankstown City at Sefton Park on Wednesday 7 September.

Kicking off at 7:30pm, the match against the Lions will be followed by trips to Wollongong and New Zealand as the Yellow and Navy look to gain the fluidity and cohesion needed to succeed in season seven of Australia’s elite football competition.

Four days into phase three of the teams' preparation for their forthcoming Hyundai A-League march, Mariners Assistant Coach, Phil Moss, said the primary focus of each pre-season game would be gaining a collective understanding of every players’ role within the team unit.

“As with all pre-season games, it’s all about us,” Moss said. “It’s not really about who we’re playing against, it’s about getting some continuity and making sure the new players who have come to the club this year understand their roles in the team, with and without the ball.

“The early signs have been very promising. We’ve got a bit of a head start from where we were this time last year, but the games are very important for match fitness which we can’t replicate in training.”

Indeed, only four days after the Mariners first clash against Bankstown Lions, the Mariners will face Illawarra Premier League Champions, Dandaloo FC – a team flush with Hyundai A-League experienced players including former Mariners Noel Spencer, Alvin Ceccoli and Sam Munro (NYL), as well as Adam Casey.

Starting at 5pm at John Crehan Park, Cringila, the match will provide the Mariners with another opportunity to build upon the base the team Moss indicates is currently being built.

“The boys are doing most things under fatigue at the moment because we’re working pretty hard physically,” he said. “We’re not rushing things, but we’re certainly not playing catch up in any way.”

The first Hyundai A-League opposition Central Coast will face in the lead up to the commencement of the new season will be Perth Glory on Sunday 18 September. A location for this clash is still to be confirmed.

Soon after the meeting with the purple-whites, the Mariners will fly south to New Zealand for a short tour of the land of the long white cloud.

The first stop on the Mariners tour of New Zealand’s North Island will be Tauranga, the biggest city in the Bay of Plenty region. There, Central Coast will face their second Hyundai A-League rivals within a week, this time in the form of Wellington Phoenix.

A match-up against 2011 O-League Champions, Auckland City, will round out the Mariners pre-season match preparations, leading into their opening game of the Hyundai A-League season proper against Brisbane Roar on Saturday 8 October.

Additional fixtures may be added to the Mariners 2011/12 Hyundai A-League pre-season match schedule. Any changes to match dates, times and locations will be advised on the Clubs' website.

Meanwhile, the Mariners have been pleased with the response to their 2011/12 Hyundai A-League Membership drive. Already, nearly 3,000 people have converted from fans to Members for season seven of Australia’s premier club competition.

The early bird price period for new Mariners Members closes at 5pm on Friday 26 August. Visit www.ccmariners-memberships.com.au for all the details.

Not the first team, or it seems even the NYL (though it is not clear in the Central Western Daily article)"

"The Bathurst 75 Panther NSW State League 2 squad will remain in training for over a month because they will play a friendly against a Central Coast Mariners Academy team in mid-October."

Also, from the Illawarra Mercury:

"Dandaloo are in the process of organising a friendly game against A-League team Central Coast Mariners at Crehan Park on Sunday week. As IPL minor premiers (by 14 points), the Lions have earned a rest on the first weekend of the finals series".

OT: Dandaloo are taking the piss in the IPL - 14 points? There's a solid argument for an IPL salary cap if ever there was one.

3-0 final result vs Bankstown. Summarizing the tweets from Yellow Army, Lawrie and CCMariners... Ollie, Baird & WeeMac scored. Baird with another goal disallowed, Matty Simon off the post, Pelle with a shot stoped by a great save. All-in-all, seemed to be a pretty easy run for the boys but wait for eye witness reports.

Lake Macquarie Roosters vs CC Mariners

Time14 September · 19:00 - 21:00LocationMacquarie Field, Speers Point Created by:Central Coast Mariners Official PageMore infoCentral Coast Mariners wish to invite fans to their pre-season friendly match against Northern NSW State League side Lake Macquarie Roosters on Wednesday 14 September.

Kicking off at 7pm, the match will see three former Mariners players - Damien Brown, Wayne O'Sullivan and Andre Gumprecht - pit wits against the Yellow and Navy of today.

In an interesting twist, Brown will in fact compete against his current employers. When he's not working tirelessly in the Roosters' engine room, "Browny" can be found completing his role as Mariners Youth Development Coordinator with aplomb!
