We're a good passing team but it's not often that we make tiny short passes up the corridor on our way to goal. We normally attack quickly through balls that use space well and break up the shape of the defence. We're masters of the "oh f**k" ball - that one that defenders see too late and realise they're miles out of position because we've got players moving quickly.

Baird has been really impressive in faciliatating the fast attack. His runs against Perth in particular were well timed and well directed. He still seems to be lacking a bit of fitness though.

2-0 to the good guys v. Phoenix.

If memory serves me correct, we have only conceded the 1 goal in pre season thus far. Against one of the Canberra teams???

Good to see Matty Ryan back between the sticks again in the starting line up. With the suspension of Pasfield his return to the team will bolster the depth of the custodian ranks.

Big news across the ditch ... great reading Australian powerhouse ...

Auckland City host Mariners in trans-Tasman challenge

Auckland City host Mariners in trans-Tasman challenge
27.09.11
Auckland City will continue their preparations for the upcoming ASB Premiership and O-League campaigns with a glamour pre-season tie with Australian powerhouse Central Coast Mariners on Wednesday night in the city of sails.

Three All Whites will feature in the match at the Croatian Cultural Society with New Zealand’s most-capped international Ivan Vicelich and David Mulligan for Auckland City and Michael McGlinchey in the opposition.

It will be the second match in New Zealand for last season’s A-League runners-up after accounting for the Wellington Phoenix 2-0 in Tauranga on Saturday.

Auckland City’s successful co-coaching duo of Aaron McFarland and Ramon Tribulietx will have slightly different roles this season, with McFarland taking a Director of Football role and Tribulietx assuming the mantle as head coach.

The pair will continue to work closely together in the reshuffle with Young All Whites coach McFarland ensuring there is a strong link between the first team and academy squads.

On the playing side the squad has a settled look, but Tribulietx will always “keep the door open” for any last minute surprises.

Stu Kelly, Adam Thomas and Riki van Steeden are the notable losses from last year. Auckland welcome Chad Coombes back to the club he has made 100 appearances for after a stint in England and Argentinean Emiliano Tade has been added from Team Wellington.

“We have pretty much the same squad as last season, with a couple of useful additions. The ASB Premiership rules mean that we have to include two youth players in the league so guys like (U-17 international) Stephen Carmichael come into the equation.

There is still a talented group of players in their early 20’s like Andrew Milne, Adam McGeorge and Alex Feneridis who are still developing but very experienced despite their young age” said Tribulietx.

Auckland City will have to hit the ground running as they fight on three fronts in 2011/12 season, contesting the ASB Premiership, O-League and FIFA Club World Cup. It will be the defending O-League champions fourth pre-season game after defeating Rewa of Fiji, and refugee and Fiji selections over the last two weekends.

Both teams are unbeaten in pre-season so far but for Tribulietx the process is more important than the outcome.

“Results are always important, but we are working on the way we play especially in possession.

It is fantastic to have the opportunity to trial that against one of the best teams in Australia so early in the season, we are still only three weeks into our work so it will be a great challenge.”

The match kicks off at 7:15pm at the Croatian Cultural Society in Henderson.

Are you really that surprised we're labelled 'one of the best teams in Australia'? It's standard PR guff, and frankly even Newcastle are 'one of the best teams in Australia'.

Bloody hell, Sydney Olympic are 'one of the best teams in Australia', and could fairly be described as 'Australian powerhouses' (though I'll laugh if they lose on Saturday, at least until I remember it's the Ustase boys who will have beat them).

Auckland City down Mariners 3-1
Wednesday, 28 September 2011

Central Coast Mariners lost 3-1 to 2011 O-League Champions Auckland City in New Zealand tonight.

The Mariners had gone ahead via a smart finish from the edge of the area by Qantas Olyroos captain Oliver Bozanic, before the ASB Premiership side levelled mid-way through the opening 45 from the penalty spot.

The Yellow and Navy fell behind on the stroke of half time, with the home side making their visitors pay via a fierce counter attack.

Auckland struck again deep into second half additional time to run out 3-1 victors.

Post match, Mariners coach Graham Arnold said the friendly against Auckland was the final test his side needed heading into the Hyundai A-League season proper.

“They are a team that is going to the Club World Cup, and they have some very good players,” he said.

“The three Spanish players they have brought in are of a very high standard, and full credit to them, they played well and at a very high intensity.

“But the result was never the most important thing for us tonight. This match was always going to be used as much as a fitness drill as much as anything else.

“We played man-on-man throughout the entire pitch to ensure everyone kept working hard for the 90 minutes.

“I don’t like to have not played a game more than 10 days before another match, so this was the perfect final hit-out for us,” he said.

Arnold also praised Auckland City’s hospitality off pitch.

“Their great club has treated us fantastically well, putting us up in New Zealand and giving us a great game. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity.”

Central Coast return home from New Zealand on Thursday, and will continue their preparations on the training pitch prior to the season opener against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday 8 October. Tickets for the Mariners clash against the Roar can be purchased via Ticketek.

The Yellow and Navy’s first home fixture of the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season is against Gold Coast United at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday 15 October.

First loss of their pre-season I believe?

It's good. It's good to lose from time to time.
