Mariners pin hopes on excellence centreDecember 21, 2009 - 12:54PM

Central Coast Mariners will build a state of the art centre of excellence that the A-League club says will help attract the country's best talent and boost Australia's World Cup bid.

The Mariners have purchased a 12-hectare site at Tuggerah for the development, which is scheduled to begin in mid-2010 and will include two world class training pitches, a centre of excellence, a six-storey office block and sports science, pool and gymnasium facilities.

In total there will be seven full-sized pitches as well as 10 multi-purpose courts and a 120-room hotel and accommodation block.

It is hoped the development will help Football Federation Australia's bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cups by providing a training base for the Socceroos or visiting international teams.

"It is felt a facility such as this will put the Mariners at the forefront of attracting the best talent across Australia, and also internationally," Mariners Trust chairman Peter Turnbull said in a club statement.

"The goal is for the Mariners to become the obvious first 'club of choice' for any talented footballer.

"We also expect the facility to be very popular for international club teams to use as a base for pre-season training camps.

"All these uses will prove positive for the entire region's economy."

Over 100 members of the Wyong RSL Club voted unanimously to sell the entire assets of the Club Tuggerah site to the A-League club, with the licensed club to be leased back to the RSL.

"We thank the members of Wyong RSL club for having the vision to understand the importance of this development, both for the future of their licensed premises on the site, but also for football on the Central Coast and for the future of the community as a whole," Turnbull said

The Central Coast Mariners are celebrating a double victory today, with the club being given the green light to become the sole owner of a 12 hectare site at Tuggerah, paving the way for the construction of its new, state of the art Centre of Excellence complex.

At an extraordinary General Meeting of over 100 members of the Wyong RSL Club, it was unanimously agreed to sell the entire assets of the Club Tuggerah site to the Mariners. Therefore, the Central Coast will own 100% of the land and its developments, which will become the "Mariners at Tuggerah" Licensed Club, and the Mariners Centre of Excellence.

In return, the Mariners have agreed to a Lease and Management Agreement with Wyong RSL, which will see the licensed club leased back to the RSL.

"We thank the members of Wyong RSL club for having the vision to understand the importance of this development, both for the future of their licensed premises on the site, but also for Football on the Central Coast, and for the future of the community as a whole," said Mariners Trust chairman Peter Turnbull.

"It is felt a facility such as this will put the Mariners at the forefront of attracting the best talent across Australia, and also internationally. The goal is for the Mariners to become the obvious first "Club of Choice" for any talented footballer."

This outcome now means the Mariners will be a property owner, bringing with that title significant asset backing, and most importantly, will enjoy a more diversified range of income streams, outside of the clubs current core football activities.

Wyong RSL clubs agreement to sell the land to the Central Coast Mariners comes on the back of a Wyong Shire Council Development Application approval just over a week ago, the application also passed unanimously at the Council meeting.

"Comments from the floor by the Councillors included "The Mariners are worthy of our support, they are the glue that sticks our community together". The overwhelming support shown by the councillors and the staff of Wyong Shire Council has been quite humbling in their desire to see this world class facility in the region," said Turnbull.

These two outcomes mean the Mariners can look forward to settlement in late January, with work on the main priority, two world-class training pitches for the Hyundai A-League side to begin soon after.

Significant refurbishment of the existing "Club Tuggerah" is also high on the list, with stage one of the "Centre of Excellence", a six storey office block and sports science, pool and gymnasium facilities is scheduled to begin in mid-2010.

Once complete, the development will be the pre-eminent sporting facility of its kind in Australia, and reaffirm the Mariners commitment to the Central Coast, and development of the game in the region through Academy programmes, a stronger link with Central Coast Football and by providing the perfect base for either the Qantas Socceroos or a visiting international team, should Australia be successful in winning the right to host either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cups.

The development will feature:

- Seven full sized pitches, including a 3,000-seat boutique stadium to be the home of the Central Coast Mariners National Youth League and Westfield W-League teams
- 10 Multi purpose courts
- A 120-room Hotel and Accommodation block
- A six storey Office Block
- Sports Science offices, gymnasium, pool and hydrotherapy facilities
- A licensed club with a 400-person capacity function centre

"It is envisaged that this facility will also become a focal point for Football Federation Australia in its bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cups, by showing FIFA we have training facilities available as well as playing stadiums.

"On an ongoing basis, we can see the Centre not only as our base, but also the base for visiting opponents form across Australia and New Zealand. We also expect the facility to be very popular for international club teams to use as a base for pre-season training camps. All these uses will prove positive for the entire region's economy," said Turnbull.

top work all involved

I'm wondering if it will be a "true" football pitch or a multipurpose field, ie extra room for rugby. I suspect it will be the later as it means more opportunity to rent the field out.

I'm wondering if it will be a "true" football pitch or a multipurpose field, ie extra room for rugby. I suspect it will be the later as it means more opportunity to rent the field out.

a football pitch built to international standards is 105m x 68m. it's got runoffs at the ends (10m) and sides (8.5m) to make it 125m x 85m.

international standard rugby league pitches are 100m + 8m in-goal areas. at the sides there is a mandatory 2m exclusion zone and 5m at the end. so they can work on a narrower ground, but they need a ground that's one metre longer. a pitch of 126m x 85m suits them fine.

even for rugby union, the minimum end goals are just 2m longer than that for rugby union, so that adds 4m to the whole field and while the pitch is 2m wider, that's not a problem with an 85m wide grass area.

so 130m x 85 is just 5m longer than FIFA standard, and fits all three rectangle codes. maximising revenue streams is the entire point of the exercise, we'd be plain silly to cut the other codes out if it means forgoing the chance to take their money.

if you want to make it really football friendly, raise the seating 1.5m or so from the turf (or sink the turf down - either way...) so everyone can see over the dugouts, ground level cameras and advertising boards. perfect sightlines and plenty of runoff.

Another report another description. Is this the 18mill or the 60mill version?? I'd say more than 18mill.
Good to see the club building a foundation that should put them ahead of the developement pack.
I now withdraw all my doubters question about the COE.

On the other side of the coin how come the Mariners have been allowed to get so far in front of the other A League clubs on this type of developement?

Now when can I reserve my seat in the new stadium?

Nobody has officially said anything but I'd be very surprised if they weren't thinking this is where we'll be playing home games  in 10 or 20 years time.

Union and League won't need to rent it out.....they'll have Bluetongue(and they're welcome to it) !

Mariners lure big fish with $20 million HQ
MICHAEL COCKERILL

CENTRAL COAST Mariners are poised to attract a significant new overseas investor following yesterday's news that a new $20 million state-of-the-art headquarters at Tuggerah has been finally given the green light.

At an extraordinary general meeting of the Wyong RSL Club on Sunday, members unanimously agreed to support the project and sell the entire assets of the club - where the centre of excellence will be built - to the Mariners. The first sod at the complex will be turned early next year, and by the time the project is completed in 2013 the Mariners will boast by far the best facilities in the A-League, and arguably one of the best training centres of any football code in the country.

Asked whether the new centre would allow the league's smallest club to match teams such as Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar, major shareholder Peter Turnbull replied: ''It will put us in front of them, and you can quote me on that. Our goal is to make the Mariners the club of choice for every talented kid in Australia and the South Pacific. We want them to know that they will get the best coaches, the best science, the best facilities, and that we can turn their dreams into reality.''

Pressed on whether this was the most significant moment in the Mariners' short history, Turnbull added: ''Our fans will probably talk about our two grand finals, but from the club's point of view, this guarantees our future. It makes sure the Mariners will still be here in 50, 100 years, and that's what it's all about.''

The Tuggerah development will ultimately include seven full-sized playing fields, a 3000-seat boutique stadium for the club's (men's) youth league and women's teams, 10 multipurpose courts, a 120-room hotel and accommodation block, a six-storey office block, sports science offices, a gymnasium and hydrotherapy facilities, and a completely refurbished licensed club.

The first phase of work will be to prepare two new training fields for the Mariners' first team, to be operational by mid next year, to refurbish the social club, and to build the office block, which has already been heavily leased. Importantly, the complex will give the Mariners a significant new revenue stream, although Turnbull, a property developer, said: ''Running an A-League club is obviously financially challenging, so while this will set us up for the long term, we couldn't survive without the continued support of the community and our sponsors.''

For the Mariners' first team, the new complex will be a godsend. Since the A-League began five years ago, they've used 15 different training fields - an odyssey perhaps best summed up by the events at the end of last week, when the players were forced to change venues as short notice when a flock of 300 to 400 cockatoos descended on their Budgewoi ground and devoured the newly laid pitch.

''I have to congratulate Lawrie [McKinna] and the boys for achieving so much under such difficult circumstances,'' Turnbull said. ''Now they've finally got a home.''

Meanwhile, it's believed executive chairman Lyall Gorman is overseas finalising discussions with a potential new investor. The Mariners are still receiving support from Football Federation Australia as they try to make ends meet. Turnbull wouldn't confirm any negotiations, but did say: ''A model like this will inevitably attract a lot of investor interest.''

The off-field developments will provide the team with a major boost for tomorrow night's crucial match against Sydney FC at Sydney Football Stadium. After pushing for a top-two spot a month ago, a run of three defeats has left Central Coast fighting for their finals hopes.

In other news, Socceroos defender Mark Milligan has finalised his switch from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua to Japanese side JEF United Chiba, who were recently relegated to the second division.

Coincidentally, Milligan will replace another Australian at Chiba - World Cup hopeful Eddy Bosnar has just completed his switch to traditional J-League heavyweights Shimizu S-Pulse.
