First Golgol, now Bernie.... coinkidink?

;)

Bozanic upfront? Most ridiculous thing I've heard in along time.

Bozanic was my worst player on field tonight. Too negative and too slow of thought and just plain lazy in defense tonight as was weemac. Killed me watching Olly show no interest in running 10 metres to close down Nichols when he should have scored off that cut back. Musti I thought was also poor, though to be fair, a lot of credit has to go the Roars pressure. No one else comes close to pressuring like that in our league.

Personally, under that kind of pressure, I think you very seriously need to consider 433, with MCBreen, Hearfied or Sutton and Bernie up front and play direct football.

It's that or you have the skill to pass around it and cope. Tonight we showed until the Roar tired, this was simply beyond us.

MC Breen looked terrific. Very sorry to hear about his dad.

Next week is a big mountain to climb, but it can be done.

The biggest positive that I can see is if we can learn from this defeat and find our way into the GF once more. This just may be what saves us from another grand final humiliation. But the Mariners are going to have to really want it.

Oh and worst game I've seen from Strebre. Ever.

Ryan. 8. Could have done better on both goals but overal he was exceptional. MOM
Rose 6. Poor
Wilko 7. Tried hard.
Dutchy 7.5. Caught out a couple of times in the first half but imperious in the second.
Bojic 5.5. Very poor.
WeeMac 5.5 his worst game of the season. Turned into blind alleys in attack and didn't work hard enough defensively.
Hutcho 6. Rank in first half but got a bit better in second half. No tempo to his game.
Amini 7. Tried hard but faded badly.
Rojic 6. Totally lost when told to play in a forward position but improved once we improved our shape. Still looked classy at times.
Bozanic 6. Similar to WeeMac and also didn't do enough defensively.
Bernie 7.5. Our only attacking option. Left isolated with zero support from the midfield.

Most of these are pretty true. The problem I see is twofold.

We have a front three that are not fit and can't pressure for any length of time. Amini is coming back to fitness and to my mind is easily the pick of the three. We cannot afford the other two as starters - they put no defensive pressure on at all. When they have come on with 30 minutes to go they run like a bull at a gate, when they start they coast.

The other more pressing problem is we are missing Griffiths big time. While Hutch can hold the ball and protects the CBs, he really doesn't get us moving forward. We dwell on the ball, lose it, Brisbane spread the ball wide and Rose and Pedj are kept constantly on the defensive. How Arnie fixes that particular problem will determine our fate this year.

If we have to go to Suncorp in three weeks, I'm having the Express Lamb Kebab again. That's all I have to say about that.

Oh, and well done to those of the Yellow Army for the atmosphere outside the old Calypso and in the away bay. Small in numbers but mighty in loud. (What am I saying - they're all just on the YA Facebook now, which I will never be. Anybody on both, let 'em know ;))

e now have to either beat them 2-0 or 4-1 at home just to draw. I can't see us keeping them scoreless, nor can we score 4 goals.

So we're stuffed. In that match we've thrown away our home final - but then again, Brisbane looked like a team that's going to win the Grand Final 2 years running, while CCM looked like a team that can't handle the important matches.
3-0, 4-1 wins it. Not keen on 2-0, no further score in extra-time and win PSO.
That's 4 consecutive 2-leg semi-finals that we've lost the first game 2-0.

Can't really see it either. I think I can see us reaching the Grand Final the long way again. As I kept saying last year - if we play them 3 times in 4 weeks, only win one AND IT'S THE LAST ONE... :pirashoot: :pirashoot: :eek:verhead:

I didn't see a Brisbane tonight that we can't beat

Hopefully, we'll back uo well against Seongnam on Tuesday. And we're 2011/12 PREMIERS (forever).

Tactical reasons I'm guessing.

Tactically we failed and technically we failed.

With Simon and Rostyn I think we would have won....Brisbane were good but far from great.

I was impressed by stefanuto...I always thought he was their weak link....I was wrong.

So I missed the first half of the match, but I'm watching the highlights package on Fox.

About halfway though, 11min39 into play. Berisha receives a through ball on the edge of the box and goes for a 1 on 1 with Ryan. Very close to offside (I think he timed the run well, but whether the AR made the right or wrong call is irrelevant for the moment)

2 more Roar players next to him, one further outside and behind, one further out on the wing.

FIVE Mariners players just on the outside of the box - but the ONLY person who made any effort to get back is whoever was in the middle (the one who's poor marking let Berisha through in the first place). We had 4 CCM supports standing around picking their nose, just watching Berisha attack the goal despite being no more than 10 yards away with plenty of support.

Absolutely disgraceful and they all deserve to be reamed for that one, but a fantastic example of why we never had a chance of winning last night. We just didn't give a shit.

Ok. not our best game but did we really think it would be any different?

We all know that being a MARINER`S fan is to be part of the greatest rollercoaster ride in football.

If we are ever going to win a grandfinal it will be done the hard way,
"The MARINER`s way".

So buckle up people. The next few games are going to be as tormenting as hell for us & if we come out holding the trophy we will all know that we deserved it more than any other team.

at the end of the day the roar just threw more at the game, you could hear Ange through the mic's constantly urging his players to pressure pressure pressure the ball and we just didn't counter it. take 2 hey

We are definitely missing matty. He's only played two league games for chunnam since leaving, starting both. He hasn't been listed in the squad for the last three games. Does anyone know if hes injured/ out of favour? Unfortunately I can't actually read korean and google translate isn't a fan of their website either.

I can have no complaint about this result: Brisbane was clearly the better side on the night and well merited the 2-0 score line. At their best Brisbane is the bench mark of football in this country; they set the standard for all the other teams to follow.

What you must not do is give them an early start but the Mariners did just that with an awful piece of defending: for a team that prides itself on its defence this was a disgraceful defending. Statistics show, worldwide, that teams rarely score from corners but the Mariners allowed Tim Smith a clear uncontested header which lead to Henrique’s goal. It wiped out any advantage we had gained with Ryan’s brilliant penalty save. It allowed Brisbane to dictate terms and, boy, did they just! In that first half hour their football was stunning, their passing and movement on a different intellectual plane, their high pressing game – like angry disturbed mud wasps – placed enormous pressure on the Mariners. Henrique ran Josh Rose ragged. Broich and Nicholls were in completed control. Only Ryan stood in the way of a landslide.

He saved the penalty but would be unhappy he spilled Smith’s header; he magnificently turned over Berisha’s magnificent shot on the turn; he blocked Franjic on his near post; but his best piece of work brought back memories of the legendary great Northern Irish goalkeeper Pat Jenning when he plucked the ball from Berisha’s feet when all seemed lost – poster to this website pjennings would have enjoyed that flash back in time.

Bernie, the lone striker in a 4-5-1, was twice cruelly denied by the errant bounce of a pitch scarred by Rugby League the night before. He was a lively threat up front providing a regular outlet to keep Brisbane honest. Brisbane, however, never had this problem because all their passing was on the ground so errant bounce didn’t come into play.

Despite the onslaught this Mariner’s side is made of stern stuff; Patrick Zwaanswijk led the way making timely interventions to snuff out danger. He and Wilko began to assume control at the back and the Mariners steadied the rocky ship.

Mark Bosnich made much of Arnie’s decision to go 4-5-1 saying it should have been 4-4-2. He was wrong, although he is allowed to be because he gets paid for it: the missing piece in the game plan was Tom Rogic who didn’t make a meaningful contribution until around 40 minutes when a trademark run provoked a yellow card for Smith. Only Amini was standing up to the pressure but with McGlinchey running down blind alleys, Bozanic struggling to contain Franjic as Henrique tormented Rose and Hutchinson simply too slow, he needed the genius of Rogic to come to the party.

Rogic almost made amends at the start of the second half as his header from Bojic’s cross was only centimetres away from beating Theoklitos. It was the Mariners turn to dominate play, Brisbane’s huge physical effort seemed to have taken its toll, and it seemed only a matter of time til the Mariners got an equaliser. It didn’t happen and when Arnie, one by one, took off the young guns Rogic, Ibini and Amini the initiative swung back to Brisbane. A-League defenders are not remotely scared of McBreen (despite a spirited display), Hearfield or Kwasnik – Rogic, Ibini and Amini, despite the inconsistency of youth, always demand the utmost concentration.

The Brisbane pressure was too powerful to resist – Nicholls butchered a well crafted chance, Partaluu, dominant throughout, smashed a shot against the bar and then he clinically, emphatically, finished off brilliant approach work from Broich.

It’s only half-time; the Mariners face one of the biggest challemdges in their history at Bluetongue in the return next weekend. The best ever display I have witnessed by the Mariners remains the second leg win in the major semi against Newcastle when we won 3-0 to get to the Grand Final. I am hoping for a repeat next week.

How I saw the players:
Ryan: saved us from a shellacking in the first half. Two deadly accurate long punts down field to Ibini, and Hearfield, showed he is so dangerous on the counter
Bojic: needed all his famed athleticism to survive the onslaught. Came stronger into in the second half and, typically, provided the cross for our best chance.
Rose: simply outclassed by Henrique who used him as a doormat.
Zwaanswijk: In the middle of a storm you need the strong to stand up and he stood up. His positioning and interceptions as Brisbane poured through the gaps was outstanding
Wilko: inspired by Patrick he too began to read the play and bring some stability to the back four,
Hutchinson: simply could not cope with the pace of Brisbane’s midfield. Sebre generously allowed him three late tackles before giving him his yellow. And before people say we missed Griffiths I should remind you that he too has always struggled against Brisbane.
McGlinchey: had the ball control but not the vision to get the Mariners out of trouble. Gave the ball away to easily under pressure
Bozanic: all hands to the pump as Rose was being battered. Struggled to give us any grip in the first half but improved in the second.
Amini: the only midfield player to stand up and be counted. The only one who could beat players and retain possession in the first half.
Rogic: someone needs to set his alarm clock about one hour earlier; took forever to get into the game turning the ball over far too often. Showed his danger much better in the second half.
Ibini: made a good fist of being the lone striker. Always made Brisbane work hard to cover his runs; unlucky with the bounce of the ball on a couple of occasions.
Subs: only McBreen made any impact.

MoM: Patrick closely followed by Ryan with good support from Amini and Ibini.
