Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

You know Carr is in the Senate, right? He'd have to be in the lower house to be PM; do you think he's going to roll someone and force a by-election less than 100 days before a general election?

Thanks Dib forgot that the PM had to come from the LH.... do you think Julia will hang on or will Blinky Bill or Rudd the Dud handed the task... my guess is Blinky Bill will be the leader of the ALP within days of the election so does he go before the election ...

gorton was a senator when he became prime minister.i think so was mcewen or fadden
carr has the nsw right shit stain so ingrained as to be more likely to become liberal party leader
than labor.
abbots first task on winning will be to silence whats left of the impartial media .ie the emasculation of the
abc. then the darkness and silence can go truely unreported

It's Westminster tradition rather than any legal requirement that the PM be in the House, but even still, Gorton's the only PM to have served as a Senator, let alone been a Senator while PM. He resigned from the Senate to stand for and win the seat of Higgins in order to lead the Government from the House of Representatives.

Given it's less than 100 days to the General Election (and only 55 days to the first available date for a combined House and half-Senate election), you wouldn't even have time for a by-election for Carr to stand in. He'd serve 2 weeks as PM and Senator, and probably issue writs on July 1 for an election on August 10.

Rudd will get home I think, and it might save some furniture but it won't save the Government.

Fighting over who gets to captain the Titanic not just after it hit the iceberg but as it slips below the water.

Potentially destroy them for a generation.

I think the next three years will be their salvation.

Look at Labor in Qld post the 2012 election - Newman has done everything he could do to destroy his credibility and damage the interests of the State, and the incoming Abbott government is planning the same strategy. They may narrow the budget bottom line, but they'll damage the economy.

Labor has 70 votes available (Anna Burke is speaker). They'll be supported by Thomson, Katter, Wilkie and probably Slipper and Bandt. 75 votes beats 74 at best (LNP and Oakeshott and Windsor).

KRudd drives off to Yarralumla to be sworn in.

If KRudd calls an election, would a vote of no confidence still be possible?

The GG is unlikely to swear him in until he's demonstrated he has the confidence of the House. Can't call an election til he's sworn in.

Interesting technicality - local government and indigenous recognition referenda cannot be held before the 14th September. Rudd's unlikely to want multiple polling dates, so he's unlikely to go early - may go late (depending on what's agreed with the indies).

So the fact that the GG has allowed the incumbent to set an election date has no impact

That's right, Newman is an unmitigated disaster. In the latest Newspoll run by the Weekend Australian, he now leads Annastacia Palaszczuk (ALP Leader) as preferred Premier decisively by 53 per cent to 21 per cent. She's about as popular as darling Julia.

let's see how long that persists with the country's worst performing economy *in spite* of the strong resource incomes.

As a swinger [voting wise] I have mixed emotions...

It is not a good look when a sitting PM is disposed by their members sorta makes us look like Japan or Italy, to people overseas .... further she was the leader at the last election... in the same way K O 7 was before her... just looks bad...

The good is we have a contest now and the Libs will be forced to discuss what they plan to do ....

At dinner parties I have said I have never seen a new government take control without extensive explaining of what they planned to do ... the three best examples I have its Gough he said I will change this and this and his song it's time... Bobby H said I will get everyone together and hold a big talk and my intention is to do this and this ... and Little Johnny H who from about 18 months out from his election in 96 held monthly meetings where he said these are the principals that we will use when looking at a particular policy area....

One thing I can say is I have never been more disappointed in the parties and leaders... K O 7 and Julia to me have been driven by poll data .... Julia make IMO a huge mistake in accepting to much policy direction from the Greens and Independents like Windsor ... further with Slipper & Thomo she appeared like a PM desperate to hold on to power ... would have been much smarter to call an election about 12 months into her term IMO... Tony A what can you say he has been presented with a position whereby everyday one vote changing and he was in power so to speak and his constant negative approach has at times become tiresome at the least...

Just talking / ranting I suppose ... however have never been more disappointed in the leaders of both parties... K O 7 can a person change as much as what is needed .... Can Tony A produce a policy ...

Blinky Bill was interesting last night in that he put Julia in power and then sorta kicked her out .... wonders aloud if he is the next ALP leader ...

In summary I am sad because I think the changing of elected PM's has made Australia look silly overseas... further an elected PM should govern for the cycle IMO ... glad that Rudd will force the Libs from behind the bush and force them to explain what they plan to do...

A little more on Gough, Bobby H, and little Johnny H... all made decisions that went largely against their parties general line... held firm and years latter have been held to be correct... Gough and the reduction of import protection... Bobby H with the change to industrial laws and the floating of the dollar and little Johnny H with the guns laws and then running to an election saying he would introduce a GST.... all of these calls went against their parties base beliefs at the times yet they held firm and argued their case... both current leaders IMO lack this belief that they can drag the nation with them .... rant over for now...
