SYDNEY FC's hope of luring Central Coast's Graham Arnold for next season could be thrown into disarray with the in-demand coach understood to be seriously considering Asia for a new challenge or taking a break.
Arnold, the A-League coach of the year, has been linked with the Sky Blues since late last year and was regarded as a near certainty to take up the role.
However, it is believed he has grown tired, disillusioned and disenchanted with aspects of Australian soccer and is now looking at his options -- one of which is to walk away from coaching for 12 months.
Central Coast's ongoing financial problems, the club's seemingly stalled 50 per cent sale to a Russian group, its slowness in coming forward with a new offer to him and Sydney so far falling short of his financial demands have all played heavily on his mind.
Arnold was also bitterly disappointed with the treatment his side received from match officials during the 3-2 loss to Brisbane Roar in the return leg major semi-final and in last Saturday's preliminary final penalty shootout defeat to Perth Glory.

Rumours that his good friend Ange Postecoglou will leave Brisbane after the grand final to join Melbourne Victory on a deal supposedly worth as much as $800,000 a season have only served to harden his resolve in terms of a possible deal with Sydney.
The Sky Blues have lodged a $325,000 offer to Arnold to replace Vitezslav Lavicka, who was believed to be on a deal worth $400,000.
The former Socceroos player and coach is determined to hold out for a bigger pay day and negotiate a deal he believes he is worthy of -- a figure closer to $500,000 a season.
Arnold, who is in South Korea for the Mariners' Asian Champions League match against Seongnam tonight, could not be contacted yesterday.
If Arnold opts to go to Asia, where he could easily command a $1 million pay packet or have a season off, it would leave Sydney in a tough position, especially given it has put all its eggs in the one basket with the Mariners boss.
Sydney FC football manager Gary Cole refused to concede the club is talking to Arnold but it is well known the club only has eyes for him.
"I won't speculate on coaches or players . . . I'll leave that up to the media," Cole said yesterday.
"People are assuming it's Graham Arnold but that is being driven by you guys.
"We have a preferred option and we have been talking to him for some time now.
"It's a contract negotiation so that will remain a private matter."
Cole, who said he would like a new coach in place as soon as possible but refused to put a time frame to it, said Sydney has a Plan B if negotiations with the preferred candidate do not work out.
"The Sydney FC board has done a terrific job and is looking at its Plan B options," he said. "We have spoken to the Plan B candidates and we have done our due diligence.
"If the preferred option falls over then Plan B will run."
Cole said the fact the club does not have a coach in place yet is not hurting it in terms of player recruitment. He denied Sydney FC is being left behind.
"The way we look at it, the whole league is on hold. Melbourne Heart, Melbourne Victory, the new west Sydney franchise and Sydney are all looking for new coaches . . . then there is speculation regarding Ange Postecoglou and Arnold," Cole said.
"Players and agents are waiting to see who the new coaches are and are not rushing to make deals."
