GA and the Russians

Anything Ray Gatt writes about Arnie is not made up. The two are good mates and Gatty often has the inside word.

Besides, he would not have survived so long at The Australian by making up stories.

If they are good mates why is he leaking stories about him? :) If true at least he won't be at another A league club.

any word on the russians?
Last correct words were that the Russians are waiting for another deal to settle. being business, things drag out and take usually 3 times longer then expected. Nothing concrete since so i suggest we are still waiting on them to finalise the other matter.

In good time it will be announced. Patience is tough!

Disenchanted Arnold weighs up Asia, or walking away

by: Ray Gatt
From: The Australian
April 18, 2012 12:00AM

SYDNEY FC's hope of luring Central Coast's Graham Arnold for next season could be thrown into disarray with the in-demand coach understood to be seriously considering Asia for a new challenge or taking a break.

Arnold, the A-League coach of the year, has been linked with the Sky Blues since late last year and was regarded as a near certainty to take up the role.

However, it is believed he has grown tired, disillusioned and disenchanted with aspects of Australian soccer and is now looking at his options -- one of which is to walk away from coaching for 12 months.

Central Coast's ongoing financial problems, the club's seemingly stalled 50 per cent sale to a Russian group, its slowness in coming forward with a new offer to him and Sydney so far falling short of his financial demands have all played heavily on his mind.

Arnold was also bitterly disappointed with the treatment his side received from match officials during the 3-2 loss to Brisbane Roar in the return leg major semi-final and in last Saturday's preliminary final penalty shootout defeat to Perth Glory.

Rumours that his good friend Ange Postecoglou will leave Brisbane after the grand final to join Melbourne Victory on a deal supposedly worth as much as $800,000 a season have only served to harden his resolve in terms of a possible deal with Sydney.

The Sky Blues have lodged a $325,000 offer to Arnold to replace Vitezslav Lavicka, who was believed to be on a deal worth $400,000.

The former Socceroos player and coach is determined to hold out for a bigger pay day and negotiate a deal he believes he is worthy of -- a figure closer to $500,000 a season.

Arnold, who is in South Korea for the Mariners' Asian Champions League match against Seongnam tonight, could not be contacted yesterday.

If Arnold opts to go to Asia, where he could easily command a $1 million pay packet or have a season off, it would leave Sydney in a tough position, especially given it has put all its eggs in the one basket with the Mariners boss.

Sydney FC football manager Gary Cole refused to concede the club is talking to Arnold but it is well known the club only has eyes for him.

"I won't speculate on coaches or players . . . I'll leave that up to the media," Cole said yesterday.

"People are assuming it's Graham Arnold but that is being driven by you guys.

"We have a preferred option and we have been talking to him for some time now.

"It's a contract negotiation so that will remain a private matter."

Cole, who said he would like a new coach in place as soon as possible but refused to put a time frame to it, said Sydney has a Plan B if negotiations with the preferred candidate do not work out.

"The Sydney FC board has done a terrific job and is looking at its Plan B options," he said. "We have spoken to the Plan B candidates and we have done our due diligence.

"If the preferred option falls over then Plan B will run."

Cole said the fact the club does not have a coach in place yet is not hurting it in terms of player recruitment. He denied Sydney FC is being left behind.

"The way we look at it, the whole league is on hold. Melbourne Heart, Melbourne Victory, the new west Sydney franchise and Sydney are all looking for new coaches . . . then there is speculation regarding Ange Postecoglou and Arnold," Cole said.

"Players and agents are waiting to see who the new coaches are and are not rushing to make deals."

So.... what about the Mariners? Won't we be equally f**ked, possibly even more so?

There's a whole article about the current Central Coast Mariners boss possibly not going to Sydney (the other options being Asia or nothing) and no mention of how it will impact the Mariners. All it talks about is how poor old Sydney will miss out.

... his options are...

Asia
Nothing
???
Sydney
(Mariners...?????)

What's the deal?

Even if we get new investors, $500K seems an aweful lot of money to be throwing at the coach in my opinion. Even $300K seems like too much of a burden for us to carry.

I'd prefer to see our debts be managed and a sustainable football club produced rather than pinning our future on a manager.

How about Phil Moss or that other guy whose name escapes me?

Pay off debts, invest in youth, dont overspend on management and if their is any coin left over, try and attract a big name player to put bums on seats.

I wouldn't read too much into it - except that Asia would be a big temptation. Arnie himself has said that on a number of occasions.

I can't see him going to Sydney because the board would interfere too much for his liking and they want to pay him significantly less than a coach he has outperformed for two seasons. Arnie has often expressed his dismay at the poor pay in relation to overseas coaches the locals get and this would get right up his nose.

I see the choice being between an Asian club (probably Japanese), staying (if we can secure the Russians and guarantee payment of wages) and possibly West Sydney.

Mossy would do a decent job if it comes to it, and on less coin. I'm hoping Arnie stays but realistically he will go at some stage in the next few years anyway.Mike Mulvey who was at the Gold Coast at the end would also do a decent job. All will be revealed soon and no point getting depressed about it as coasches and players come and go all the time.My only worry is losing the coach and backroom staff at the same time but i doubt that will happen.

Leaking?

Have you entertained the possibility that it is Arnie driving the "leak" so he can raise his own value and let clubs know he is on the market?

To me this is the most likely explanation.... negotiating in the media.

I just thought it was funny that the whole story is about Sydney missing out on Arnie rather than him leaving CCM. Maybe this is applying the blowtorch to CCM a bit as they are dragging things out too long.

If we are to believe the slow trickle of articles that have come out over the last few months, Arnie is waiting on CCM, CCM is waiting on "the Russians", and the Russians are waiting on some other business to be finalised.

Arnie looked really pissed off at the end of the Perth game too, when he rattled off some of the decisions that have gone against us while he has been in charge. The comment about going to a bigger club was a shot at the FFA, so I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Asia even if all the pieces fall in place with investors and he gets an offer from CCM.... obviously hoping that doesn't happen though.

GA?

I assume you mean this?

If you're right and GA does get appointed as Gamba Osaka coach (within the next couple of months) I'll buy you one of these and apologise for ever thinking something you said was a load of shit, including the thing about the accountant makes all the business decisions, and the Mariners have never had to compete with another club for a player's signature.

Is that a glass, a bottle or a case?

I do not drink that.
2-1 Sydney FC, 5-1 Japan, 7-1 CCM.
The Accountant should have the ability, as in the qualifications to ADVISE, they are called business advisors, Fortunity say's that they operate in that capacity on their website! If I was being paid by the Mariners to perform in this capacity I would certainly advise that they a) pay their freaken taxes and b)pay their freaken super.I would also have the Trust agreements and ownership models structured in a way that enhanced the Mariners value upon sale or enquiry of ownership. At the moment the best way to describe it is a shambles. IT IS THE STUMBLING BLOCK FOR MANY!
I would also eleviate tax and super issues through a restructure of the paid employees. I woul doutsource marketing and promotions. All that without even seeing the P and L. And ask the question how does the Central Coast Mariners operate? What are the key drivers? What can enhance the business? What is restricting the business?
