I believe this wont be the first or last situation of the club having to make the tough decision of keeping/letting go of one of our players in the next 12 months, and I believe the next player to be targeted will be Matty Simon. Top that with more interest from the Asian clubs and we will having to make a stand or deciding on letting players go to our opponents across the seas.

EXCLUSIVE: Central Coast supremo Lawrie McKinna is urging Matt Simon to stay one more season in the A-League before considering a move to Europe.
At 22, Simon is one of the hottest properties in Australian football. A tally of 11 goals from 14 starts has made this his breakthrough season.

He is now second on the A-League scorers' chart behind Kiwi phenomenon Shane Smeltz on 12 (also Phoenix's penalty taker).

Simon's physicality and deftness in front of goal have been a nightmare for most A-League defenders this season.

Last Saturday's impressive performance against Queensland Roar and Socceroo star Craig Moore was just another reason to believe Simon can adjust to a bigger stage.

The lanky Mariner gave as good as he got against one of the most experienced, and toughest, defenders in the league.

Given Simon toiled last season without finding the net, the one-time Central Coast Lightning player's rise has been one of the season's feel-good stories.

Simon is likely already on the radar of UK clubs and agents, but McKinna says his big forward would be best served garnering valuable experience from the club's Asian Champions League campaign later this year and another season in the expanded A-League next year.

"My advice to Matt is the same as I gave Mile [Jedinak] a year ago," McKinna told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"You need to cement yourself with a good second season. You've got back it up."

With no passport issues Simon has an ancestral link it means the tall forward should have no problem moving to a European club, most likely in the UK, where his style will be more suited.

A so-called "back-door" move to Turkey, Holland or Belgium would probably not be needed.

Simon has a chance to leapfrog Smeltz this weekend when the Mariners visit Melbourne Victory.

"Too many players don't back up with a good second season and go over too early on. You have to find consistency," said McKinna.

"But the good thing is, Matt knows this."

What about former mariners players coming back on loan or contract.

Michael Beauchamp
Leo Carle
Mile Jedinak
Chris Tadrosse
Vuko Tomasevic
Russell Woodruffe

would mile come back on loan for the acl ??

lol for woodruffe, carle, vuko, and tadrosse

please refrain from 'lol'ing at Vuko.

He was a fatastic servant to the club and will be fondly remembered by all I'm sure.

A club legend. A statue should be erected outside the stadium in his honour.

Gods country mate..... . 30 mins to the wineries ......... Sanitarium factory , elephant shop, what else could you want...... (and trust me I lived in a number of great spots on the CC as well)

Sorry but Vuko was in the backs when we had our worst season and honestly I saw sweet FA from him that year.... I think too many people rate him from the Northern Spirit days - fact is we are not the Northern Spirit, never ever ever....

If Vuko pwns why did he not get another contract and only get 11 games..... because he did nothing.....

anyway happy to keep disagreeing all day, won't change either of our views....

The Mariners should go in for Costanzo and Diego Walsh for the Champions League as United wont be offering them a new contract and they have experience in the competition. Diego would walk start into our starting line-up in the centre of midfield and Costanzo would be a great help to our defence.

what do people see in diego? honest question - i see a player who's got a couple of neat tricks but loses the ball a lot and is hardly a midfield enforcer.

do u think we might get a marque player

maybe not a marquee player but we need some players that are solid. like a jamieson from adelaide or Roddy vargas from Victory. im sure we will get these players.

id like to know what Laurie and the staff are thinking about atm, they must be on the verge of something.. interesting

I look at our current midfield and feel he would bring a lot more to the table than anyone else on our roster. Definately not an enforcer in the mile mould but would be a welcome acquisition and would probably work great with A.C
