Mariners sign Northampton Town skipper Chris Doig to a two-year deal
By staff writers
June 09, 2009 Central Coast Mariners have begun assembling their playing roster for the 2009-2010 A-League season by signing Northampton Town skipper Chris Doig to a two-year deal.

A former Scotland under-21's representative, Doig made his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old for Nottingham Forest against Manchester United in 1998 and went on to play 93 matches for the club.

Central Coast manager Lawrie McKinna hinted that Doig could be the first of several signings for the Mariners, who finished the last A-League season in fourth position after the regular season before being eliminated by Queensland Roar in the finals series.

"Chris comes highly respected from plenty of good judges in the UK, Ive seen a DVD of him and he has great presence in the box, a solid left footed stopper, but hes also a solid professional, and Im looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Hyundai A-League," McKinna said.

"We are still looking at bringing in some more new faces, but as Ive said before, they have to be better than what we have already got.

"We'll sort through some CVs over the next couple of weeks while the boys are on holiday, and we should have some more lads on board before the squad gets back."

The 28-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to the Mariners, after completing 232 competitive matches in Englands top three divisions.

Doig's time at Forest was followed by a brief loan spell at Northampton in 2003, before shifting to the Cobblers for the start of the 2005-2006 season.

There, he played with current Central Coast squad member Pedj Bojic, and racked up 130 competitive appearances for the Cobblers, becoming the club's captain along the way

Hmmm - so now we are using DVD's to sign players - sounds like Newcastle style recruitment....

Seriously though I am happy he has signed - If fit he will assist greatly with our leaky defence...

League's 1 and 2 over there........you need to have a bit of tosserness to be captain of a team in those leagues don't you ?

im guessing sheffield did the medical as our clubs are linked and so we wouldndt have to pay for a plane ticket to check on him (assuming the clubs covers those costs)

You know me too well.  :p  I more meant it from a 'there won't be too much change to the way he's been playing' kinda thing, he can just pick up where he left off (minus the shipping goals and relegation part).  I just hope what Arab said is right about the c*nt position (heh) - goodness knows we need it filled (HA!!!).

Bit wary of the whole "signing without trialling" and "I've seen a DVD of him" - hope that doesn't become a permanent thing.

OR, Archie runs in from the other side and continues his stupid scoring record against us.  :p

I'd certainly prefer the former though....

doig is a great signing, adds alot of expeience at the back and i reckon this will really help wilko develop his game a bit more and take alot of the pressure off him. Doubt he will get captain cause he is the new bloke but he will be a leader out on the park, maybe vice captain. Good work CCM

Good news ... LG said in the express last week over the next two to three weeks we will have some news. Still two or three signings to go.. so that is Huke, Travis, now Doig, pus two or three more ... maybe it will not be as bad a season as many of us through...

Chris Doig signed. GOOD

With Huke and Pedj that stiffens up the defence a fair bit.

I can imagine Boogs and Heff starting to feel their starting spot coming under pressure.

Has Travis been confirmed as signed yet?  ???

Very happy, finally a true prick to give some people a good kicking, I'm seeing some sore Brazilian players after taking him on.
