In a recent interview Nick Travis described himself as a box to box midfielder;
the report I read about trialists said we were trialing two but did not say that both were Jamaican.

Not a striker from the looks of sydney game. Midfielder, and central i would think. Did not look to have the pace to be a wide midfielder.

Did not look to have the pace to be a wide midfielder?........ a bit like the other midfielders we have on our books...... apart from Porter and Simon, all our players are a tad slow..don't you agree?

If he's put in as a forward it means that Lawrie can still play Hutch in midfield.

Any way any ideas on our strongest line up? I've got

                                 Danny

           Pedj        Wilko         Doig         Heff

Elrich/Kwas       Travis        McGlinchey     Caceras/kwas

                       Matty            Macca

Bench: Huke, Boogs, Mrdja, Redders

Pedj will be cm.

Mc and travis would provide little cover for the defenders.

Caceras has a tad. Kwassie is quite quick. Porter is quick. Heff also quick.

But travis was playing killers balls from the middle, I would assume that creativity was what lawrie sees in him. That would be wasted out wide, or up front.

He does not have the build or pace to play up front from what i saw.

When Hukes back he will play mid, he has that powerfull long shot that would be wasted at CB. Wilko will hit new confidence with someone next to him that has nuts. No need for Huke there.

Porter would not start over Hutch at CM, especially with Travis next to him. Too lightweight for Lawrie.

Same goes for Travis and McGlinchey, there is simply not enough cover for the back four with those two small, attacking minded players. Pedj or Huke would have to play DM behind them.

Sadly true, Porter is one of the most promising players at the club and deserves a spot in MF (if thats at the expense of our Maltese Maestro, so be it).

Quite true FFC.

If Boogs plays RB and Elrich remains out of favour, Porter might get a run at RM. He impressed me in that position playing for Lightning last season. It was more RW (very high up the park) but he is good at getting forward and has enough pace to be out wide.

...I wonder what he ordered... Nasi Gorengs are pretty good from there.... Or the combination noodle... mmmm
Any whispers of Lawrie giving him a biro & a piece of paper?? Be good to have another player over 6ft... defensive midfielder possibly by the looks of things...

I think Part timer is up to mischief.

Re Gary Wales, I didn't hear we are not signing him? My best guess would be that as we still have two triallists and two spots remaining, we are looking at all options before making any final squad offers.

Re starting squad...

Some people are putting Huke in? He will be out for another 10 weeks minimum.

                                  Danny

          Boogs        Wilko        Doig        Heff

                      Hutch                Pedj

Porter (Elrich)      McGlinchey (Travis)    Kwas (Caceres)

                          Matty/D Mac

Bench: Travis, D'Mac, Redders, Elrich, Caceres/Mrdja.

Pedj and Porter are both able to drop back into the back line if required. Great squad players that way and I think Porter laid down a strong claim to play wide last season with his runs down the flanks and decent balls in. Clarkey is/was a great crosser of the ball also and has been our best distributor of the ball from the back for mine, I think this is missed when its not there and so I hope that this is something Doig may assist with and also an area that Boogs and Heff are working on.
I don't think Travis will probably start yet but McGlinchey will.
Boogs will get RB or I'd be surprised.
Up front, pending fitness, I think Matty will probably start.

I think a 4 2 3 1 is a good shape against MV as i believe we need to compress the game and win the midfield battle. MV can't be allowed to play free flowing football or please god Lawrie/Wilko don't let Archie run at a flat high back four again. Makes me wantb to blow my brains out! Simon is a handful even by himself upfront these days and then we have creative McGlinchey tucking in behind him and some pace in our wings to get forward and still create two waves of attack coming through, which is what we need if we are to do them imho.

I think this is why Elrich and Caceres got canned recently as you cannot let your forwards be doing the attacking unsupported, (Latter of v4 and ACL looked this way) the mids have to get in behind them and make a second wave of attack. Its one of the thing Victory does so well. Thompson and Allsop are always well supported in attack by Ward, Hernandez and Tommy (sniffle). This is what must be closed down.

Work rate with our attacking mids has to increase this year if we are to be highly competitive... and it looks like Lawrie is buckling down on it and also that we will have the depth in the squad. Great to have players competing for these spots and giving their all.

Not a bad squad at all really.

Come on you YELLOWS!

The day is coming though... We have gone from an Aussie club to an Anglo club in one off season. Who knows where to from here?
