According to the Sydney Morning Herald we are trialling two more including a Jamacian International. Anyone know who they may be?

Looking at wingers on the wiki site these guys come up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jermaine_Johnson
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Williams_(Jamaican_footballer)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamal_Campbell-Ryce
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demar_Phillips
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Morrison_(footballer)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafe_Wolfe

If I was a betting man I would defintely say it is one of the last two and most probably Jason Morrison. They are both Sheffield players farmed out to our Hungarian sister club with Morrison being a more attacking mid than Wolfe.

I would happily take Jermaine Johnson though.

We have signed Doig... but the defense which has been our problem over the past year or so is still essentially the same...

steady on - until we conceded 8 in our last 3 games last year, we had one of the better defences in the league. the year before we weren't too shabby either.

I think the problem there wasn't as much the lack of defence either as much as it was the lack of a large man wearing number 23 that really hurt us. tightening up the back line and defensive midfield setup is what's needed. We have a few signings in that area.

Wilko's a great player who had terrible form. If he comes back to form we're much better off - it's equivalent to a new signing. To a lesser extent the same is true of Boogs. With luck and another year under the belt D'Appuzzo comes on a bit to challenge Heffernan too. Our significant loss in that area is Osman, but given many didn't rate him anyway I doubt people will notice.

Boogs is actually better than Wilko tbh

i meant that his form was less dire, and that's even though he had injury issues. wilko seemed to have headspace issues last year.

both of them on form would give us an improvement on last season, and then doig looked handy too from the leichhardt showing. now if only someone could teach heffernan to play football we'd be set...

Is Heff's lack of technical ability starting to show more? I haven't seen any trial/pre season games but if Doig is marshalling Wilko and Boogs into form, maybe Doig will have to work on Heff's side and tell him how to do things?

We didn't only lose Jedinak as a player we also saw the team lose confidence, notably Caceres and McAllister but also including Boogard and Wilkinson. I think Doig can bring that confidence back and thus our defence will improve across the board; when Doig is injured or suspended I expect that new found confidence to remain and Boogard or Wilko to step up.

I may be wrong, but last year, even with Jedi, didnt we draw most matches?

If Im right, wouldnt that mean that Jedi leaving was just a part of a larger problem?

I think Tommy and Vidmar leaving has been largely overlooked when trying to diagnose our problems.

Leadership was our weak spot in defence, you only have to look at how many goals we conceded from corners to attest to that! Hopefully Doig kicks some asses of anyone found ball watching.

Jedi masked this because he often scrapped to win the ball before the opposing team could advance far enough to win a corner or free kick, when he left we werent winning those 50/50 challenges in the DM position and were found out badly.

Not every team in the a-league has a Jedi in their team but they have leadership at the back (thinking of Kevin Muscat here), hopefully Doig will be our unofficial captain and leader at the back.

losing vidmar was big, wilko played his game with vidmar there
when he left wilko took to much upon himself, doig should bring
the best out of wilko.

was robert younis any good??
cant remember him, he's playing
for APIA trying to get into the
a-league after leaving adelaide.

Given our additions, how do you think we will line up in 9 days?

I'm not sure of the injury situation except I don't expect Huke to be there. I have also assumed little Mac is signed.

I'd be looking at

        Danny

Porter   Wilko Doig Pedj

Travis McGlinchey  Hutch Kwas

  Simon Dyl

Bench: Redders, Clarky, Caceres, Elrich, Nik

Pedj gets the nod over Heff because of his free-kicks and I think Heff has struggled against Melbourne. Clark gets the bench spot because he can cover the whole backline.

The big concern is that Caceres, Elrich and Nik have all been bagged by Lawrie. They can either take it the right way and buck up - or we have little on offer on the bench.

Johnson was involved in an altercation with Taye Taiwo, for which they were both shown a red card, but Johnson also appeared to push the linesman.

Do we need another Danny saga? ;)

Good post.

The defence WAS poor all year but Jedi stopped them being exposed most games. Without Jedi shielding them they were dire and there was zero leadership.
Thank god for Doig who already appears to have them sorted but we are still light on defensively and we still don't have a specialist RB although apparently Travis can play there.

Assuming we signed McGlinchey and he's match fit for the HAL :

..........................Danny
Boogs............Doig.......Wilko..........Heff
Porter/Travis...Pedj....McGlinchey....Hutch
...................Simon......Kwas

Bench - anyone else

Lawrie has persisted with Pedj in the middle all pre-season , he won't change that IMO.  Kwas and Simon have also been linking up well in training, Macca is still not 100%.

Boogs is too slow for a RB thou IMO but feel based on pre-season he'll get the nod, Archie could have a fun game?

Caceres and Elrich are lazy, don't really wanna be here, Nik is just Nik, shame really as they are all good players on decent money, their attitudes needs to change to play much part in V5.

Boost for Coast as Blades $1.8bn man joins board

Michael Cockerill
July 29, 2009

ENGLISH property tycoon Kevin McCabe is poised to become a significant investor in the Central Coast Mariners in a move which could transform the A-Leagues smallest club into one of the most prosperous in the competition.

McCabe, who owns Sheffield United and also has stakes in Chinese side Chengdu Blades and Hungarys most famous club, Ferencvaros, yesterday took a seat on the Mariners board in what is likely to be a precursor to becoming a major stakeholder.

McCabe has a personal fortune estimated at $1.8thbillion after selling a majority share of his property company two years ago, and has long demonstrated a willingness to invest some of that wealth in football.

While Central Coast have developed into one of the more viable clubs in the competition following the arrival of majority shareholder Peter Turnbull in 2007, they are entering a period of transition both on and off thethfield.

Development approval for a $20thmillion, world-class training and administration centre at Tuggerah is expected before Christmas, while for the first time the Mariners are looking to overseas players to strengthen their squad.

Negotiations are also continuing over a consultancy role for Socceroos assistant coach Graham Arnold, who has not been involved at club level since 1999.

Central Coast have already signed three imports Scottish defender Chris Doig, English midfielder Nicky Travis and New Zealand playmaker Michael McGlinchey for this season, while the club hopes to add two more foreign strikers to its roster before the Augustth31 transfer deadline.

A marquee player is also in the pipeline for season 2010-11 as the club looks to make the most of McCabes extensive network of contacts, which includes a sister club relationship between Sheffield United and Brazilian powerhouse Sao Paolo.

Turnbull, who also made his fortune in property development, yesterday hailed the significance of McCabes decision to take a seat on the Mariners board. It follows the establishment of a co-operation agreement between Central Coast and Sheffield United early last year.

Kevin is a football man with extensive experience in building football clubs, and having him on board is all about taking the Mariners to the next level, Turnbull said.

Its incredibly exciting, and will make sure were as viable and competitive as any club in the country. The first priority is the Centre of Excellence, because ultimately that will provide the revenue streams. But what were about is making sure the Mariners are around for a long time to come, and having Kevin as part of that will make a huge difference to the way we approach the future.

The Mariners usher in the new season with a match against champions Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium tomorrow week, and will be without defender Andrew Clark and striker Dylan Macallister through injury, but new boys Doig and McGlinchey are both expected to start.

Coach Lawrie McKinna believes that his players will be far from daunted by the occasion and instead will be inspired by it as they begin the long path towards redemption after a woeful year, which included a disappointing Asian Champions League campaign.

Its going to be fantastic for the players going down there, said McKinna. Its a big occasion for the boys, especially the boys coming from overseas. A great stadium, a big crowd. Welcome to Australian football, welcome to Kevin Muscat. Its the perfect platform for us to get going, and make a statement about pushing for the title by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the Mariners second-choice goalkeeper, Andrew Redmayne impressed Sheffield United during his recent two-week trial, and could yet join the Blades. Redmayne, now in Argentina with the Young Socceroos, has a British passport, which would simplify a move to Bramall Lane.

Excellent news. Be interesting to see if he puts his money where his mouth is and commits from a financial aspect in terms of bringing in solid players. It is good to see that they are talking about bringing in a marquee player next year. Lets hope its someone half decent.
