Central Coast Mariners Squad for 2008/09 Season

I think the story of what has been going on is possibly quite simple.

The club has been letting the players go, who are probably too expensive to start from the bench, in order to make room under the cap for the major signings that are needed.

The first of these would have been a class attacking mid. It seems Lee Hendrie was the target and he would have cost a packet but unfortunately chose not to come to Australia (pommy bastard). Would have been a massive signing if it came off.

The second one could be a goalkeeper, JVS's name is being mentioned. Once again would not be a cheap signing.

Are there plan Bs? I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

makes sense - he was wearing some sort of engineering society t-shirt, and looking generally dishevelled.

With all of the lay offs who will be replacing them?

If you have been reading this forum for the last few days. You will know that not even the club can seem to answer this question (at the moment) let alone anyone on this forum. We have vacant marquee and junior marquee spots which mean that we didnt need to free up any cash to bring in any extra special players

So if this is not the plan then why the mass lay offs?  If the current trend continues we will hardly have a team to field in the season proper.  When there are mass lay offs in the business world it is either the workers are going to be replaced by machines, the company is losing too much money and cost cutting is the only way to stay afloat or the money is being invested in some big time managers/players.  Which is the closest description in this situation?

As dibo said, if there were any answers they would be in this thread.  Unfortunately I don't have the time to sift through the 72 pages of (mostly) drivel this thread has generated to try and find answers.  All I am saying is that the radio silence from the club is eery.

how is the kwassy situation a layoff?

fact is - we wanted to keep and gave him a payrise, yet he went to another club for 50% more than his new offer

this whole sack elrich, keep kwasnik thing is just stupid - we were aiming to have both in our squad, signed elrich, was on the verge of signing kwasnik, yet he went for a better offer

as far as we know kwasnik still would have went even if we didn't sign elrich or carceras

Not sure what/who your source is Mick but 50% is no where near right, there is more to the Kwasnik situation than documented but fact is he's gone and I wish him luck!

The club will move forward, they will find suitable replacements, I just hope it's not too far away as a team needs time to gel and there's not a huge amount of that left before pre-season/Rd 1!

source is very, very good

Tobin returns from eye opening So Paolo excursion
Thursday, 26 June 2008

Central Coast Mariners Development Manager Alex Tobin has returned from a week-long stay with Mariners sister club So Paolo in Brazil eager to further establish the yellow and navys links with one of the true giants of world football.

Tobin was given a rare insight into So Paolos truly one of a kind facilities in Brazils most populous city by virtue of the Mariners relationship with English Championship club Sheffield United, who have formalised links with both the Mariners and So Paolo in recent times.

While in So Paolo, Tobin was treated to a viewing of the clubs staggering youth academy and senior squad structures, which over the years has produced an astounding number of world class players including no less than Brazilian national team icons Adriano, Cafu, Juninho and Kak the worlds most expensive footballer.

The So Paolo youth development network is commonly regarded as the best in South America, if not the world, and continues to produce wave after wave of exceptional footballers, many of whom dominate the big leagues of Europe, South America and Asia at present.

"The quality on show during my stay, on and off pitch, really has to be seen to be believed," said Tobin.

"Its quite phenomenal just how well resourced So Paolo FC is by way of facilities and infrastructure and this translates to a talent pool at their disposal that would be the envy of any professional football club in the world.

"The trip was hugely beneficial in terms of further developing the relationship between the Mariners, Sheffield United and So Paolo and we will certainly explore these links in greater depth in the future both long and short term.

"The prospect of So Paolo sending one or more of their best youngsters to the Hyundai A-League to link with the Mariners is one that appeals to them, as it provides the player with a chance to develop their game in an environment different to what they would be typically used to, as well as providing us with a top-class player capable of contributing most positively to our season.

"This is just one of the initiatives that were talked about between the clubs that were so kindly invited to experience So Paolo's facilities and we will absolutely keep the lines of communication open between all that belong to our worldwide network in the lead up to the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season."

Mariners Memberships for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season are now on sale at www.ccmariners.com.au.

Just on a side note at the mariners game in canberra on wednesday Damien Brown did not score, it was the same small CM that scored twice. He played for Belconnen in the first half, then played for the Mariners in the second Half and scored a double.

We must assume the bleeding obvious LM has people in mind and the cat cannot be let out of the bag as yet. As I posted somewhere yesterday the SU mids not coming I wonder how much they were in the plan.

Lets hope AT brings some from So Paolos first team .........

Yep, managements clearly going to be working hard on delivering us all some exciting news and further additions... though the "time to train and gel as a team" concern is still very valid.
