With all of the lay offs who will be replacing them?  Maybe pooling all of the freed up cash for an extra special player (or two)?

it's amazing folks - there's a whole thread titled 'Central Coast Mariners Squad for 2008/09 Season' that's full of the answers to these and many other questions. ;)

If you have been reading this forum for the last few days. You will know that not even the club can seem to answer this question (at the moment) let alone anyone on this forum. We have vacant marquee and junior marquee spots which mean that we didnt need to free up any cash to bring in any extra special players

So if this is not the plan then why the mass lay offs?  If the current trend continues we will hardly have a team to field in the season proper.  When there are mass lay offs in the business world it is either the workers are going to be replaced by machines, the company is losing too much money and cost cutting is the only way to stay afloat or the money is being invested in some big time managers/players.  Which is the closest description in this situation?

As dibo said, if there were any answers they would be in this thread.  Unfortunately I don't have the time to sift through the 72 pages of (mostly) drivel this thread has generated to try and find answers.  All I am saying is that the radio silence from the club is eery.

mass layoffs?

get off it pal:

John Aloisi, signed to another club for $illy dollar$
Damien Brown, retired
Alvin Ceccoli, was only signed to cover Heff (who's now back) essentially retired at this point
Andre Gumprecht, contract not renewed
Adam Kwasnik, signed to Welly for more money than we would/could offer him
Ian McAndrew, released as he isn't up to the standard yet
Damian Mori, was never permanently signed
Tom Pondeljak, moved to Melbourne for family reasons (just became a dad, wanted to be near his and his partner's parents IIRC)
Matthew Trott, can't carry injured keepers
Tony Vidmar, retired.

I have a feeling that of the ones we had any choice in, Kwas is the only one we'll miss badly *this* season.

Then look at the pickups
Elrich
Caceres
MacAllister
D'Appuzzo

There's some talent in there and I wouldn't treat this as a closed book. I'm as concerned as anyone that we recruit well, but the season's still a few months away.

I dont know if maintenance costs are included in the salary cap, but seriously how much can motor oil and anti-freeze cost compared to a biological players salary, I like this innovative idea :p

how is the kwassy situation a layoff?

fact is - we wanted to keep and gave him a payrise, yet he went to another club for 50% more than his new offer

this whole sack elrich, keep kwasnik thing is just stupid - we were aiming to have both in our squad, signed elrich, was on the verge of signing kwasnik, yet he went for a better offer

as far as we know kwasnik still would have went even if we didn't sign elrich or carceras

. there have only been two layoffs (trott & macandrew) both, it would be argued, in the interests of the team and neither could be argued for cost cutting reasons

. the kwasi defection seems to have come out of the blue a little for the club - which could be a bit of a spanner in the works considering how close we are to the start of the season and that they could not have really planned for it

. i would have thought with trotty leaving a new keeper being announced was imminent - or perhaps they are desperate to demonstrate a vacancy to some prospectives?

. the sheffield mis-fire may also slow things down. if that had happened and kwasi stayed as planned we would be pretty close with a keeper signed. but having said that it might also be a good idea to talk the player involved and see if he is interested in moving to the other side of the world before relying on it too much

. now we have about 8 unsigned positions, closer to the season than i would have liked, so i am adding to the 72 pages of apparent drivel

. ah crap there has been about 5 posts since i started typing ... bugger it, its staying uneditted
