We are at the bottom of the food chain signing wise and will always have to wait for players who havent got a gig elsewhere. That and the fact that we save on wages by signing people late means we wont be rushing in to get new signings

Been some talk about how great our facilities are. Is this just rhetoric or are we really comparable to the big boys?

While we are at the bottom of the food chain, at least financially, waiting until the end of pre-season takes away what was our biggest advantage and probably the reason for our success last season.

Having a settled, fit side that had trained together all pre-season was what made us so successful and organised in the early rounds, we just ran over the top of sides that had not had their teams together until essentially the season started or even after. We were the only side in the A-League last season who had basically the totality of their side do a whole pre-season together. Nigro and Urena were the only two players that played any sort of real role in our side who arrived late.

It might save on money intially but as seasons 15/16 through to 19/20 demonstrate, it comes at a huge cost when attempting to assemble an organised and settled side. Everyone of those seasons we were on the back foot, because we always put our sides together so late and it showed in the beginning of seasons.

1 win in the first 5 games in 15/16, 1 win in the first 5 games of 16/17, 0 wins in the first 5 games of 17/18, 0 wins in the first 5 games of 18/19, 1 win in the first 5 games of 19/20. We put ourselves out of finals contention basically five games in because of a lack of pre-season time together as a squad.

If we want to be successful we need to put our team together early, not wait for fairlytale signings that most likely won't happen. We need to control the things that we can control and this is one of them, a small relative spend for a huge potential upside. We need, at minimum, to give Monty the tools to be successfull. Not allowing him to quickly assemble his squad, no matter the budget we spend, will not give him the time and tools he needs to make next season a success.

TLDR: Get our squad in early, that's what made us successful last season.

I strongly agree with the sentiment JP, but happily I don't think it's apples with apples. Getting a full squad together asap is valuable no doubt... but unlike every season since GA left, before we even sign anyone else at all, consider that in Birra, Miller, Rowles, Hall, Boz, Stens, Niz, Marcos, Matty, we know we have a fantastic spine and nine more than capable starting players already here and raring to go.

Then we have Hatch, Smylie, Ballard who all have A league experience now. Maybe a few more of last years squad still to be announced... So even without another signing there's nothing to stop us putting a very fit team on the park who all know, respect and are willing to work for each other.

As far as another Visa I would be under the belief this year would be our best opportunity to gain the best pedigree at a better price.

So many countries with thousands of cases and decreased quality of life.

I’d be sitting in front of google, looking at top 5 goal scorers in every top 2 leagues in most countries.

Risky cause we don’t know them, yes.

Chances of spending money on proven in a league - Luna, Fondre, Davilla, mclaren, etc.
Never going to happen!

Otherside of the argument is you know what the opposition has and can recruit accordingly.

We could have gone out early signed the majority and then found out all these players are coming back and our squad wouldn’t be good enough or if we waited we might pick up some good scraps.

Some teams may even loan us players to get unhappy players off the books

Also risky is that would we be able to get an new players into the country.

I see a couple of "personalities" seem to have made it in the last few days,
but even so it could prove difficult to get a player in.

Didn't Ken say allude to visa players already in the country in the last pod?

This from the SMH a few days ago in relation to OS players

The same can’t be said for A-League clubs recruiting foreign players and Australians based abroad. The soaring airfare costs as a result of the flight cap could prompt clubs to rethink their recruitment of players, potentially prioritising foreign stars without large families. Senior A-League sources informed The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age clubs were concerned the high airfare prices could effect the quality of foreign recruits.

Yeah we might have missed our targets though.
Mind you I’d prey for Alina or one of the effective wingers that actually create things.
