Arnie goes shopping in Argentina
April 8, 2010

NEW Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold, who is in Buenos Aires, hopes to sign two Argentinians - a playmaker and a second striker - by the end of the week.

Recently released Mariners striker Dylan Macallister is set to join Gold Coast United, while one of the club's other strikers, Nik Mrdja, may return to his home town to rejoin Perth Glory, where he scored the winning goal in the last NSL grand final in 2004.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Jets are set to announce their third signing within a week after former Socceroos midfielder Kasey Wehrman finalised his two-year deal yesterday. Queensland-born Wehrman, 32, has been in Norway for the past nine years, where he played last season with Lyn Oslo, and arrives at the Jets hot on the heels on recent acquisitions Ruben Zadkovich (Derby County) and Jeremy Brockie (North Queensland Fury).

Newcastle's shopping spree is unlikely to end there, with coach Branko Culina eyeing off Dutch forward Romano Denneboom, 29, who is on loan at Sparta Rotterdam, and Spanish midfielder Arnau Riera, 28, as potential targets.

Would explain why Mrdja is not on Mariners site with current players.

Arnold is still making the right noises. If the 2 Argie's are quality we may be looking forward to a better season.

I am reminded of the story of the Sheff Utd directors who went to Argentina to sign Maradonna but ended up with Alex Sabella...

Would be happy to see Mrdja move on, not because I dislike him, because we have too many similiar style strikers and need to offer variety.

So Nik, who has signed a 1-year contract with us for the up-coming season, may be going to Perth instead.
Why do players (and clubs) in this game of football bother signing anything? Whatever they sign is worthless, or at least that's the impression they give.

It was a crazy signing though really given McBreen was coming (well whoever was the second of those two signings).  Simon + Mrdja + McBreen is just too much of the same thing.  It makes sense for all parties for someone to move on from that.

Looking ok. good noises etc...

Sainsbury responsible for giving away first goal on tour with Qantas Young Socceroos. I know the thoughts on agenda and collusion but as a Mariners supporter - really hope Moss and Arnie prove to be right about these youngsters.

On a more positive note, Amini has done well off the bench so far apparently...

Not commenting on whether we want to keep Nik or not, and I commented about the sameness of our strikers when McBreen was first signed. I suppose with GA looking for possibly another striker what we have already is too much.
My point though was about contracts, and the fragility of same. They really do seem to be a waste of time.
