1 of our current squad members is off to China for a 3 month loan I'm hearing, useful experience and opportunity to keep fit I guess.

Its Wilko to a club about 200 Kl south of Bejing in Kwodoe (spelling don't tell Dibo) province. not sure of its name.

Kewell, or maybe chippers  :headbutt:

One tip for the recuits in the next couple of weeks is Jon McKain. Not spectacular - but would be a solid signing. CBs are still needed. Doig is still an injury worry, Wilko is probably are best choice at RB and not sackwhack is a CB/DM.

The visa players are where we need to see the creativity and flair for the midfield - the fabled 'Argie #10'.

However Chippers might be looking to come back to Australia

Basels Chipperfield hints at A-League return

17.03.10 | Andrew Slevison

FC Basel star Scott Chipperfield has given another strong indication that he may end his playing career back home in the A-League.

The Australia international was heavily linked with a move to Gold Coast United last season but the new club could not fit him into the salary cap but he is still entertaining the idea of coming back, potentially after the World Cup.

"I spoke to the Gold Coast but they didn't have anything because of the salary cap," Chipperfield told the Illawarra Mercury.

"I'll have to see what pops up in the A-League. I might just retire after the World Cup. I'll see what my motivation is like. I have talked to Basel about playing another year.

"I'm thinking about it, but the winters here are getting hard.

"There's two stadiums with synthetic pitches and another one going in next year and it's not great on my body.

Recently the 34-year old veteran has been trying to regain full fitness after being out for some time with an ankle injury but is confident he can get back to consistent form leading into the World Cup later this year.

I feel pretty confident at the moment. (David) Carney and a few other guys have done well, hopefully I can regain my match fitness and play well," Chipperfield added.

"The World Cup hasn't been the priority, my first aim was to get back on the pitch because people were wondering if I would be back in time. My ankle is holding up well and we have 14 games before the World Cup so I'll be able to get some match fitness."

Mariners make double swoop
Friday, 19 March 2010

by Glen Lauder

The Central Coast Mariners playing squad for the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season is continuing to take shape, following the signings of two Qantas Young Socceroos, in the form of gun Sydney FC prospect Sam Gallagher, and defender Trent Sainsbury, a graduate of the Australian Institute of Sports football program for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons.

"The club is continuing to look toward the future and both Sam and Trent arrive with not only impressive resumes from their time in the National Youth League, but theyve both been identified as very exciting prospects, something which we are keen to harness," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"We look forward keenly to the contribution we hope both of these players will make to the Mariners, both on and off the field."

Gallagher, a Manly United product, was drafted into the Sydney FC senior squad late in the season as long-term injury cover for Matt Jurman, and although hes yet to feature for the Sky blues in the Hyundai A-League, hes sure to use the experience of being around the premiership winning squad as a huge positive as he makes the trek up the F3.

The 18-year-old also has national team experience under his belt, after the New South Wales Institute of Sport product was part of the Qantas Young Socceroos squad which featured at last years Under 20s World Cup in Egypt.

"Hes come with good recommendations from Jan Versleijen from the Under 20s (Qantas Young Socceroos) as well as Gary Van Egmond down at the institute. Ive seen Sammy play a couple of times with Sydney FC and I saw him at the Under 20s World Cup," said Mariners head coach Graham Arnold.

"Hes a player who can play at left back or left central defence, another youngster, and I think its good to have five or six youngsters around, it really adds a lot of enthusiasm into the place and I have a lot of belief in youngsters.

"Sam has been impressive, I think he can go to another level, and we can take him there."

Central Coast Mariners Joining Gallagher in the Yellow and Navy is boom AIS defender Trent Sainsbury, who has been a standout under Jan Versleijen and Gary Van Egmonds tutorship at the Canberra based institute.

Originally from Perth, Sainsbury has also had national team experience, and was a regular at the back for the AIS side in this seasons National Youth League, following on from an impressive debut season with his hometown club, Perth Glory.

"Trent is a very promising talent out of the AIS, hes a central defender who is very good on the ball and in the air, and its a great addition for the Mariners," said Arnold.

"Hes a youngster, only 18 years of age so hes got a bit more development to do but I see a really bright future for him here at the Mariners."

The acquisitions of Gallagher and Sainsbury brings the Mariners total squad number to 17 so far for the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season, and Arnold is hopeful of more high quality additions.

"I will be heading to South America and Europe over the coming weeks and months as we look to finish off the squad.

"Im still searching for an entertaining, creative number 10, who will really excite the fans at Bluetongue Stadium. There are a couple of players I know about and Ill be looking at, so Im looking forward to the future," said Arnold.

There is no chance in hell Gallagher was actually watched to be picked up by you. That's one of the funniest signings I've seen. Must be purely signed on recommendation?

He's a poor defender. Apparently was playing up front for Spirit FC about 5yrs ago so he's not been a LB for long, but he just can't defend that well. Came back injured from the U20s so only spent about half a season playing for us, but even then struggled to break in. We often played our first choice RB at LB, and one of our CMs or RMs at RB while Gallagher was on the bench.

There's talent in there somewhere, maybe, and it may well be at LM rather than  LB. But our defence was terrible all year aside from one player (Austin), so I've NFI why you'd think to take any of them. It's utterly terrible that Austin doesn't have a deal and Gallagher does.

so they pick rubbish defenders for the young Socceroos?

Funny policy

The competition isn't exactly stiff - nor did he get game time from memory. HE was the squad bolter.

Won't see a single minute in the HAL next year unless there's an injury crisis.

How can you doubt Arnie Jaza?

Interesting that these guys are signed to the 1st team squad and not on Youth contracts. lawries reluctance to blood youth was, I believe, a bit of a roadblock and makes the older players complacent.

I was questioning if we should retain Gallagher for our NYL team next year. I probably would have, to aid with continuity (we'll shed a lot of other players) and maybe hope the talent turns in to something.
To give him a 2yr HAL deal is unfathomable.

That said, I think it shows what Arnold is doing. I remarked a while ago that CCM had f**k all cap, especially when compared with the quality needed to boost the squad. By stacking the remaining spots with youth, he can spend big one 1-2 roles for the first team.

A huge bag of $$ to be spunked on Argie No10 together with a poacher type striker (we seem top heavy with target men)

you know it makes sense

Time will tell... but by signing so many youth players I guess they hope one or two can make the top side...

I think Gallagher got some minutes at the Under 20 WC but didn't do much to make an impression on me. Clearly this is the Phil Moss connection. But can't for the life of me understand why we now have five kids in our first team squad unless as Jazza says we've only got saucebottle tops to spend on players instead of hard coin.
The signing of Salisbury may well end Sherlock's hopes but then again, if we have no money, maybe not.
Having seen how many of Sydney's Youth actually made a significant impression on the A league last year, despite 5 getting first team contracts at Sydney, I can't see too much from Ryan, Lewis, Gallagher or Salisbury; Amini may be a liitle bit special though.
And if my name was Jerry Kalouris I would be on my bike. :redcard:

In fairness to Arnie though, he is still unbeaten :innocent:

But then,of course, if the story is slightly misleading and they are actually for our Youth team (which makes a lot more sense) then all is forgiven :)

i doubt its misleading as it says at the bottom of the article that the these 2 signings now brings the total number of players to 17 for next season. Agreed on the sherlock issue, but i guess he hasnt been able to impress arnold, although one thing working in his favour is that he can still play youth next year, if arnold wants to keep him on for youth.

Vukovic, Ryan, Doig, Wilko, Rose, Porter, Griffiths, Hutch, Bojic, Lewis, Amini, McGlinchey,Kwasnik, McBreen, Mrdja, Simon plus Gallagher and Sainsbury = 18?

maybe someone isn't coming back from loan? Maybe the Mariners can't count? Maybe I'm just wrong....

I don't think Griffiths has been announced yet. It has only been a 442 exclusive at this point and nothing from CCM. Really hope he will be with us though.
