+1

Though tbh I'd still like another quailty RM that Porter can battle for his spot with.

The line up... Mmmm as above is little too samish for mine...

I'd be starting Nik over Matty, but preferably I'd be starting the new "different kind of striker" mentioned as wanted by Arnie, that our attack has been Screaming for for an age.... - being the speedy, step over, skin a defender or four Ifill/thompson ilk...
Matty and Nik can then fight it out Mcbreen for the Hold up role as far as I'm concerned ...

Whatever the case, I hope Matty is working busting his ass doing technical work over the break  and Nik is learning a trick or two off Archie... not to mention watching very carefull as Carlos strikes the ball ;D

For me I'm still hoping for something that shaped up more like a 433....

                    Danny

    Wilko -- Doig  -- Nonscum -- Rose

      Porter  ---  Weemac  --  Hutch

              Marradonna's love child
McBreen  --      -- Jermain Defoes lost twin

All said, this seems to be the fastest off season signings I can recall in awhile??

Mariners on horizon as Payne searches for new contract
MICHAEL COCKERILL
March 16, 2010

Sydney FC are hoping to keep hold of man-of-the-moment Chris Payne but face a battle for his signature from his home-town club, Central Coast Mariners.

Instantly notorious after scoring a controversial goal, which came off his arm, in Saturday night's preliminary final against Wellington Phoenix, Payne is more concerned about sorting out his professional future.

The 19-year-old striker has been a regular bench-warmer for the Sky Blues, playing just 413 minutes so far this season, but he snatched his chance after John Aloisi went off with a season-ending injury last weekend - albeit with the help of the goal that came off his arm.

Payne is now in pole position to start against Melbourne Victory in the grand final, and it seems the club is warming to the prospect of keeping him on the books.

''We're interested in retaining him and we're hoping to progress the talks over the coming days and weeks,'' said vice-chairman, Scott Barlow. '''Vitja' [coach Vitezslav Lavicka] has had some initial discussions, and believes he's a player who's got potential and room for growth.''

Asked if that translated into a contract offer, Barlow conceded: ''No, not yet.''

Payne last night said he was keen to sort out his future, as his contract expires at the end of the month.

''It's hard training and playing without knowing what the future is, so I am getting a bit toey, actually,'' Payne said. ''I haven't been offered anything, I'm still waiting for the club to come up with something.

''You hope something will come out of it when you train hard and play, but we'll have to wait and see.''

Sydney might have to move quickly as the Mariners are known to be interested in bringing him back to the Central Coast, where he played for Umina in the junior ranks before moving to NSW Premier League side Manly United. With Manly United coach Phil Moss set to become Graham Arnold's assistant at Bluetongue Stadium next season, the Mariners will have an even stronger case to get him on board.

In the meantime, Payne is still dealing with the fallout from his goal against the Phoenix, admitting he was surprised by the strength of the reaction.

''Obviously it was a big game, but it's definitely surprised me how much attention the goal has got,'' he said. ''The cheating thing, it's a bit of a shock, because I'm not like that at all. The full intention was to head the ball, it just happened to come off my arm.''

Did accusations of cheating hurt?

''You only worry about yourself, not what others think,'' he said.

''Everyone will have their opinion, I just blank it out.''

Meanwhile, Sydney's reserve goalkeeper Ivan Necevski has signed a new one-year year with the club. Necevski, 30, has not played a match this year after first-choice stopper Clint Bolton cemented his position.

Necevski may have better luck next year when Bolton moves to Melbourne Heart, but the Sky Blues have already agreed to a three-year deal with Wellington Phoenix glovesman Liam Reddy.

The club obviously thinks he's got talent, and he's still very young, but do we really need another striker in the top grade?
We wouldn't keep him long if we signed him & then kept him in NYL, I wouldn't think.
Maybe next season will be Nik's last with us & they want to groom this guy as his replacement?

He's a bit like a young Kwasnik IMO. Not sure I'm wild about it, but he'll be cheap and he's a local, can't hurt.

This is where I think we need to have bigger benches too. We've essentially got a 3 man bench because of the reserve keeper.

There are matches where you want to be able to throw the young fella in to see how he goes if your starters have done the job/muffed it up already but where if the game's in the balance you might have a better option.

This year he's been #4 at Sydney behind Brosque, Bridge and Aloisi. All of those players have been missing at times this year so he's had a bit of a go, but in other circumstances he might have missed out even where Sydney were well up because he wouldn't have made the 3 man bench. If we had 5 or even 7 man benches, our young players would get many more opportunities to be blooded in senior matches.

I haven't seen him play that much but wouldn't think he's as skilful as Kwas ... more confident perhaps.  It is a bit too much of a muchness ... I'd sooner a more skilful type of striker with some speed ... perhaps Asian?

Agree with all of that.

As for Asian players, the problem with any of the good ones (i.e. the type we see doing well in the AFC CL) is the cost. We just don't have the coin. Japanese clubs in particular spend an absolute bomb on salaries and we can't compete.

Given the choice, I'd rather get a good young striker from an A3 league than a washed up old hack from somewhere from football's 'old world' though.

We also need someone in midfield who can create for the guys up front... In that department weemac was a tad disappointing last year... as for Payne agree with comments he will be a bench player fast but if cheap a good pick up...

I hope that Mustafa gets his go as the attacking creative mid ... would love to see how good he is...

Maybe Arnie will pick up a number 10, and his small fast striker... hope so ...

1 of our current squad members is off to China for a 3 month loan I'm hearing, useful experience and opportunity to keep fit I guess.

I hope that's after the friendly game with Adelaide United (in Adelaide ... steady!) on Thursday .. they will be hard pressed to find 11 as it is, even with trialists and NYL players.

Arnold eyes early hit out

While new Central Coast Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold insists tomorrows friendly hit out against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium shouldnt count as his first game in charge of the Hyundai A-League club, he admits hes excited at the prospect of taking his place in the technical area.

The Mariners travel to Adelaide to provide the Reds with competitive opposition, as they prepare for their third group stage clash of the AFC Asian Champions League, after two wins in their opening two matches against Korean and Chinese opposition.

I wouldnt say its my first game, its a training session. Its a good opportunity to have a look at some of the younger players, and to make my mind up on a few players for next season. The boys have been excellent since the season ended, Ive trained them for another month to down-train them and their attitude has been fantastic, but I think they are looking forward to having a game of football instead of training.

Aurelio (Vidmar) is a good friend of mine. Hes done a fantastic job down there in Adelaide and theyre doing well in the Champions League, but one of the problems for teams in the Champions League is keeping match fit out of season, but Aurelio knew that we trained on so he rang us for a game, so we will go down there and give them as good a game as we can, said Arnold.

Arnold says hes hopeful of adding some new faces to the squad, to join the new additions of Daniel McBreen, Joshua Rose and Mustafa Amini, who will link up officially with the Mariners at the beginning of Pre-Season in May.

Im very happy with the Australian recruitment. There will be another one or two good signings in the next couple of weeks, plus there will be another three or four visa players to really add some top quality in the squad.

Ive got talent scouts out pretty much all over Europe, the UK and South America as we speak, then, on March 31 Im going to South America for two weeks to have a look at some of the players that the scouts have identified, and then across to the UK for the next four weeks until the end of the Premier League, and while Im there with youth teams, Championship and lower divisions playing midweek, Ill be able to get out and see some of those games as well.

Hopefully by the time the middle of May comes around Ill be able to come back with a couple of overseas signings, said Arnold.

The Mariners squad will continue to train up until the end of March, when theyll break for a well deserved break, following two years of almost non stop football, thanks to their participation in last seasons Asian Champions League.

In the first month it has been a big job so far, moving players out and starting player recruitment which I see as vital, but also changing some things around off the field around the place, as well as on the field.

The enthusiasm here is fantastic, Im loving the job, its a great bunch of boys and a good club with good people, and Im excited to get back after the World Cup, said Arnold.

The squad will begin its arduous pre-season training program in the first week of May, with a list of pre-season trial matches to be released in due course.

Kewell, or maybe chippers  :headbutt:

One tip for the recuits in the next couple of weeks is Jon McKain. Not spectacular - but would be a solid signing. CBs are still needed. Doig is still an injury worry, Wilko is probably are best choice at RB and not sackwhack is a CB/DM.

The visa players are where we need to see the creativity and flair for the midfield - the fabled 'Argie #10'.

However Chippers might be looking to come back to Australia

Basels Chipperfield hints at A-League return

17.03.10 | Andrew Slevison

FC Basel star Scott Chipperfield has given another strong indication that he may end his playing career back home in the A-League.

The Australia international was heavily linked with a move to Gold Coast United last season but the new club could not fit him into the salary cap but he is still entertaining the idea of coming back, potentially after the World Cup.

"I spoke to the Gold Coast but they didn't have anything because of the salary cap," Chipperfield told the Illawarra Mercury.

"I'll have to see what pops up in the A-League. I might just retire after the World Cup. I'll see what my motivation is like. I have talked to Basel about playing another year.

"I'm thinking about it, but the winters here are getting hard.

"There's two stadiums with synthetic pitches and another one going in next year and it's not great on my body.

Recently the 34-year old veteran has been trying to regain full fitness after being out for some time with an ankle injury but is confident he can get back to consistent form leading into the World Cup later this year.

I feel pretty confident at the moment. (David) Carney and a few other guys have done well, hopefully I can regain my match fitness and play well," Chipperfield added.

"The World Cup hasn't been the priority, my first aim was to get back on the pitch because people were wondering if I would be back in time. My ankle is holding up well and we have 14 games before the World Cup so I'll be able to get some match fitness."
