Central Coast Mariners squad - 2010/2011 HAL season

Ok enjoy. Hopefully they don't have an unfulfilling career spending time pondering where they might be if they actually tried.

They found their way here for a reason, and so far they are fulfilling what we learnt when researching them when they were prospective signings... and it wasn't positive.

After what so far has to be called an underwhelming season we really need to start focussing on next year. We can still make the finals - but the rebuilding has to start now.

Danny has had a fine year and Redders seems an able standby.

Our defence this year has been - on the whole - one of the bright spots. However, we have lost both of our first choice fullbacks.

Our midfield - on occasions has shown some creativity, though Travis and Wee-Mac are both young and a tad inconsistent.

Our strikers have been - for the most part out of touch. The return to some form of Mrdja shows just what we have been missing.

So where do we go to build on the 12 below.

Wilko
Hutch
Danny
Porter
Doig
Kwasnik
Redders
Simon
Lewis
WeeMac
Bojic
McBreen

The first step is two-fold. Lawrie's position must be decided unequivocally. Background talks with Graham Arnold and possibly others have only served to muddy the waters. What is needed is the full coaching structure to be organised, including Lawrie's role, the COE, the youth team and how they all interact.

Once that is done we need to look at a marquee attacking midfielder.

A marquee is important for many reasons.

1) Proves to the punters we are serious
2) Adds to the gate
3) Attracts other players
4) Helps retain those we want to keep.
5) Can be used to attract people to the COE.

The announcement of the structure, together with a sufficiently recognisable attacking midfielder should be the completion of the first step.

My next steps would be to target players that we need to overcome shortcomings and to retain the ones coming off contract that we need to keep.

This would include an offers to Van Dyk -a striker that can operate both alone and with others and Jamieson as a replacement for Heff. LB is always a problematic area and one where a lot of teams struggle. I woud also like an offer to bring Bozanic back from Reading.

Of those coming off contract the two I would target would be Travis and Mrdja and Panni.

Finally some youngsters. Nathan Sherlock I think should get a go. I believe we have been trialling Peter Cvetanovski. As a 17 yr old he was very impressive. If he has come along in the last three years OS since then he may be a good answer at RB.

Finally I would probably retain Huke as a squaddie as he can cover DM and CB.

So that would leave us with

GK: Danny, Redders
LB: Jamieson, Bojic
CB: Doig, Wilko, Huke, Sherlock
RB: Cvetanovski, Porter
HM: Hutch, Panni
LM: Bozanic, Lewis
AM: Marquee, Wee-Mac
RM: Travis, Kwassie
S: Van Dyk, Mrdja, Simon, McBreen

All except the Marquee are really not out of our price range. But the marquee is the key. We need a consistent creator. If we don't have that it doesn't matter who you have up front.

With the problems some teams have had with their marquee strikers (excluding Fowler of course), would it be worth offering van Dijk?
For those not devotees of football, blokes putting the ball in the net are always attractive. Consider how many of those kind of people have heard of Culina (a marquee mid), but I'll bet a lot have heard of Smeltz.
Remember we had some good crowds when we had Aloisi, and although there were other factors, I'd reckon a number of bums on seats were there because of him.

There are a lot of players out there, and that's before we get to the fact that there's going to be a number of quality players graduating from NYL setups next season who will be after entry-level senior contracts.

This squad's going to be a work in progress for a while I think, but I don't think we need be pessimistic that there's nothing left on the tree and that we should focus only on the low hanging fruit.

I don't particularly care about this season's results if we start showing we've got an eye for the future. Missing the finals comes at no long term cost if we treat it as an opportunity to blood youth and build. The attitude of the club has to be to focus beyond this season and build a squad that will take us on into 2011, 2012, 2013...

just saw on the jets forum that danny allsop is negotiating a release from his middle eastern club. Maybe a striker to try and pick the rest of your season up? With simon badly out of form and macallister just being rubbish full stop

Dibo, good point regarding the NYL players that will be picked up for next year and that is a concern for us as we have our youth at the top of the table and could be poached by other    A- League clubs.

I think Trifiro was a loss (in hindsight) from last season. Rovers will be stiff competition when they get in too
