Nikas earns senior dealWednesday, 9 December 2009

by Glen Lauder

Panny Nikas
Central Coast Mariners / John Dewberry Central Coast Mariners Central Coast Mariners National Youth League Captain Panny Nikas has today been rewarded for a stellar season to date, with a full-time deal at the club until the end of the season.

Its a double dose of good news for the club heading into Saturday nights home match against Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue Stadium, following the news Daniel McBreen will join the club from North Queensland Fury for two seasons from 2010/11.

Nikas, who has scored eight goals in 10 matches this season, will join Lawrie McKinnas first team squad for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 campaign, and will be available for selection for this Saturdays Round 18 clash against Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue Stadium.

"Our National Youth League side is sitting on top of the ladder after 14 rounds and Panny has been a big part of its success," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"This opportunity is just reward for a player of Pannys calibre, and we look forward to him not only contributing to the team, but also learning a lot off the senior players as he continues to develop."

Nikas signing comes after the club agreed to the mutual termination of David DApuzzos deal, after the young left back opted to focus on studying for a law degree.

"Panny has been outstanding in the Youth, scored a lot of goals, and week in week out he is one of their best players," said Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"With David deciding to take a break, its worked out well for Panny, hell come in and train full time with the first team squad, and we expect him to get better."

Nikas has been a revelation this NYL campaign, and has seen him continue on with his amazing form in 2009, which saw him score an amazing 22 goals from midfield for Sutherland Sharks, to help lead his team to Telechoice NSW Premier League Grand Final glory.

"I was out shopping when (Youth League coach) Tony (Walmsley) called me, so I was pretty wrapped when I got the phone call," said Nikas.

"Im just trying to do my best in the youth league and every time Ive been called into training Ive tried to work to the levels that the boys are working at, because they are going pretty well."

Total swing in the dark based on Deej's post and Sydney's latest signing of Reddy.

Danny heading O.S with Ncevski coming to us.

Ivan deserves a first-team deal somewhere.

Would we prefer to take a punt on Redders if Danny left?

Is he much younger than Danny was when he got his start in V1? Would only be a year I think?

imo, would like to see that happen, and with 2 quality keepers in the youth we would then still have good back up keepers

No. Reddy is my second hated player of all time behind sackwack... Especially when he stomped on sully in the minor semi in V1... He is a whinging baby and he is not the type of person I would like to see in our community.

Where is your God damn hat reddy???

travis is on a 2yr deal = a fee, and if wee-mac goes 6mths early that will also = a fee.

we found those two boys and they've been very good for us, there are more where they came from. the fact that they've done well and are in the position to consider moves back is a good advertisement for our club and our league.

maybe i had them back to front...

if he goes at season's end, no fee obviously.

actually, given contracts end on mar 31 there's probably no fee regardless...

Yeah back to front - hate to lose Travis, but at least he's made it clear what we need to work in tandem with our midfield. Creativity and a willingness and ability to run into space and take players on...

As per Socceroo selection... and Deej's cryptic post...
From our squad you'd have to be thinking - Matty, Danny and I guess Heff as the only possible contenders - so each of those may be looking for a January exit... But as Heff has signed with Heart - you'd think it is most likely Danny and Matty who are looking for new clubs.

Damn was looking forward to Matty and McBreen... But now thinking Mc Breen may be planned as the new Matty. And we are gathering bucks to spend on a marquee striker to play alongside him - with the young Welsh kid coming in to help bolster our current strike options of he goes.

It's still looking ok for next year though imo.

Redders is as good as most keepers in the HAL form what I've seen.

A new marquee striker would be exciting and great for crowds - and if we can get a fee for Matty and Danny we should be looking ok in this regard you would think.

Mc Breen looks a good quality signing imo. He's a known quantity and I'm more confident about him than most strikers in the league.

Then we can spend the dosh made on the release of probably Mrdja, D'mac and Ahmad - on another LB - if it won't be Lewis. If Sherlock was brought into RB we may not need one - but another RB so Porter can play mids also seems the go to me - and then another centreback for cover for Doig and Wilko with Boogs gone. And last but not least a creative attacking mid to replace Travis.

All that said, with Crowell looking quality and now Panni coming into the squad - Lewis in the wings... Mids are still looking in pretty good shape - even without Travis. Not that I want to lose him. Weemac is being bullied/marked out of games by the other teams now - and needs other dangerous attcking mids to alleviate the pressure. There's been talk of him going missing lately... I think its just taht other teams have been getting stuck into him..

I must have missed it who is young Welsh kid coming .. he sounds good I must be behind the times on this one..

If Travis goes Porter is not his replacement .. Travis is a class above most mids in the A-League ... maybe we could get a picture of Travis doing something bad and blackmail him into staying .... nar won't work just hope he stays for another year..

Play Redders I agree and look for some new backs and a striker...

Me thinks holding onto Danny, Matty, Travis & weeMac will be hard next year ..hope I am wrong..

I think he needs to play in the middle - he's been playing out on the left too much.

I agree. I don't know why but he seems more effected in the middle. Perhaps it is because he has options all around him to release the ball before being muscled off. He links well with Travis as well, so being close to him helps.

Yeah agree, always going to see less ball wide. But he has definitely been targeted much the same way as Hernandez is with MV from what I've seen.

. which is why he should be playing alongside travis ... both quite nippy and good with the ball at their feet. the interplay between them can tire and frustrate the opposition ... generally if they don't tear 'em apart they should draw plenty of freekicks
