Agree with Dibo that Hutch should start DM. Its his specialist position.

Cant agree with the nonsense about Doig. Quality CB and at least as assured on the ball as Wilko and a more accurate passer.

Sainsbury would be a liablity in a game of this magnitude.

Well that sucked. Only got to see the last 30 minutes, can't wait to see Kwasnik's send off on replay, from what Wilko said post match, it sounds dubious.

I guess you could always see Ryan having another blunder, just a pity that it came at such a crucial time.

Fantastic crowd - 12,409 according to the a-league website, why can we never win with a sizeable crowd at home???

Of course the protected one avoids being sent off..again.
As for Matt Ryan disappoiniting tjat error aside, sounds like he had a pretty good game :(

Shit refereeing. Kwassy spits dummy after Muscat knocks him over, yellow card.
Muscat spits dummy over corner decision, nothing.

How many opposition strikers end up on the ground holding their heads after being marked by Muscat. MRP is crooked.

Shit tactics, one man down, 20mins to go, 1 goal up. We defend deep in our own half and when we get the ball we give it straight back. No holding possession.
Shoot Arnie.

Shit keeping, caught in no mans land with the cross for the first goal. Dropped ball for the second. It was only a matter of time before his hands cost us.

Fed up.

Well, I`m gutted!!!We gave away a sure 3 points

Kwassie`s send off was the turning point of the game. Whether he was right or wrong his lack of discipline has really cost us big time.

Once he went off we just tried to park the bus & from where I was sitting it was just a matter of time before we conceded.

As for the second goal...shit happens.I wouldn`t crucify Ryan because I thought up to that point he had a pretty good game.

I stand by my previous comments on Hutcho.I got f......g dizzy watching all the 360 degree turns & eventually spewed when he did it when we were on the attack. If it wasn`t for Ollie continually covering for him we may have been behind at half time.

As for Muscat, although he`s not on my Xmas card list I have to admire his professionalism.
He draws players in & gets under their skin.

Maybe the MRP will have some more work this week ...ROFLMFAS as if?

MOM... Ollie :-3 points a 110% effort
Dutchy:-2 points. His long passes continually
put us on the attack in the first half
Rose :-1 point I love the way he gets forward &
attacks.

Enjoy the New Year ..it`s drinks time now!!

I'm not going to comment on the game until I have seen the replay except for two things.

1) You can't sit on your 18 yard box and expect not to be punished.
2) I thought Sainsbury acquitted himself very well until he was injured. Yes - I was one of the people that didn't want him to play.

I was also one who wanted Doig to start over Sainsbury but I'm very happy to be proven wrong. Sainsbury stepped up great. I'll never doubt him again.

I stick my hand up re Sainsbury as well. Thought he owned Kruse. Socceroo? You having a laff?

And MV yardstick? Vomit. You must be kidding. We were dominant until the send off. After that it was a horribly painful result.
Things like the Muscat bias/injustice and poor refereeing are what comes closest to ruining the HAL for me. Side after side, week after week, the awful and inept decisions just keep on coming.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MARINERS...

Go on to challenge Roar in the final.
Because you can and deserve to.

And now that another teen has proven his worth how long will it be before Arnie will promote Bernie at least onto the bench and eject McBreen to the grandstand with the phantom. I have not seen Bernie play but from reports he is pretty quick and he scores goals. Today was the day we needed a flyer to run at a tiring defense. Instead all we got was a lumbering draughthorse who wouldnt run out of sight on a dark night. Does McBreen's contract run out at the end of the year??

Gutted.

Since when has a player been able to kick the ball out of a goalkeeers hands?

Oh, it's the A-League. That's alright then.

We definitely sat too deep. Those goals were coming, don't forget fatty should have levelled it earlier.

I thought Hutch was better than usual in terms of, well, playing more like Griffiths. Picked the ball up and released it quickly when he could. Don't forget Melbourne basically play with three narrow backs and three defensive midfielders - it's a very tight area to work in.

Sainsbury had a good game - not a barnstormer but didn't look out of place. That's as good a place to start as any for the kid.

Dutchy. Monster. Rose. Amazing.

I don't get the Olly love. Made odd choices. The free kick late was a shocking choice - four blokes over six foot at the far post and he plonks it in the palm trees. Just stupid.

Ryan should've held Ferreira's shot but he did have two hands on it and the ball was stationary. Brebner kicking the ball out is a free kick. The penalty shout was no different to Grosso's in the world cup in 06. Penalty then, penalty tonight.

Kwasnik shouldn't have gone off at Williams, especially not having already collected an unnecessary yellow. Nevertheless, consistency and correctness of decisions is the issue. Williams got the call wrong and the card for that is a joke considering the abuse Muscat gets away with each and every week. Mariners should appeal with a Muscat's Greatest Hits tape.

Oh, and how does Ricardinho not find himself in the book for his abominable challenge on Simon? I mean for f**k's sake, he stepped on his calf while he was standing and kicked him to the ground.

A good game that probably deserved a draw, and instead of talking about the contest I feel compelled to talk abou the cock in the middle.

No change there then I suppose.

I want to start by saying I thought we were magnificent tonight and deserved at minimum a draw if not a win. A very, very gutsy effort to play so long with ten men. A truly pulsating match full of drama that showed why football is the best game of all.

The twists and turns, the unfairness, the highs of scoring, the lows of conceding and ultimately losing, the officiating, the emotion, the atmosphire, the perfect round ball, the perfect players, the imperfect players. This is why I am in love with football. Tonight had the lot and even though we lost it is the beautiful game and we support the beautiful club. Tonight as much as ever, I am very proud of the boys and our club and I feel very lucky to be able to have as our local team the Central Coast Mariners. We're the benchmark for all HAL clubs off the pitch and over the next couple of seasons we will be the benchmark on it. We've got some great times ahead of us and this season is only the beginning.

Tonight is as sick as I've ever felt after a loss.

Matty Ryan, head up mate, you've been fantastic all season and these things happen to all keepers from time to time. Dutchy was the best for us tonight and a special mention for Sainsbury. I thought he ws excellent and if he keeps that up Pedj will be looking over his shoulder. It's so exciting to see these young blokes given a chance and do so well. The depth we have in our squad is the best we've ever had.

I thought Arnie was very smart with his changes after Kwas was punted. On Kwas, he won't sleep much tonight and no sympathy from me. For someone as experienced as he, his dissent was unacceptable.

I honestly believe we'll finish second and give the title an almighty shake. McKay, Kruse and Cullina are huge losses for their clubs and them missing for the next month has made it a whole lot harder for them.

One last comment, Muscat is pure scum and how he gets away with his shit is beyond me. He is a protected man and that is something I will never understand or accept.

Aplogies for the carry on and long post but I feel better for having written it after such a heartbreaking loss. Repeat after me, we all follow a yellow football team...

Basically had we nailed two or three of the chances in the first half we'd all be happy, happy! NY resolution - Must do better in that regard!

Last two posts sum it up ... we can whinge all we want (and it is warranted we were wronged) but the chances we had we should have been up by half time ...arnie should b looking at that... Hopefully With kwassiemodos red it gives Bernie a run on the bench...but who knows ...good game anyhow ...happy new year all :)

Did Arnie step on a black cat? What did the Mariners do to deserve that? 12,500 joyous New Year revellers have the game taken away from them by a combination of thuggery, pedantic refereeing and bad luck. The Mariners were all over Melbourne in the first half and should have gone to the break a goal or two to the good. Chances to McGlinchey, Kwasnik and Simon should have brought better reward, and our defence was well organised and kept Melbourne at a distance. Sainsbury coped well and Zwaanswijk was imposing as ever at the back. Our lead after Kwasnik ‘scored’ was no more than we deserved. And then the referee, ‘look-at-me’ Ben Williams intervened. Sure, technically, he was likely correct to give Kwasnik the second yellow but where was the common sense, where was the understanding that the decision would ruin the game, where was the realisation that reducing the Mariners to ten men would spoil the spectacle for the huge crowd? And spoil it, it did. A rampant full strength Mariners, with their noses in front, would have overrun Melbourne but the task was beyond ten men. Even then Josh Rose could easily have been awarded a penalty. I thought Arnie did the right thing in taking off Perez, who was by then looking like a kid who hadn’t an invite to the party, bringing on the more robust McBreen and bringing back Simon to midfield was tactically smart. McBreen kept the defenders honest and nearly hustled another goal from Leijer and Petkovic while Matty Simon went on a mission to be a one man wrecking ball in the front line of defence. His physicality, energy and courage deserved far more reward. A prescient post earlier in the week telling us of Ryan’s habit of spilling the ball sadly came true. And I think he should have done better with their first too but this kid is just a kid and sometimes shit will happen. Ernie Merrick must be the devil incarnate after that lucky win, and Muscat his willing disciple. I thought McGlinchey, Simon, Bozanic, Rose, Zwaanswijk and Wilkinson were our best today; But, in the cold light of day, the truth is that, once again, we let the opposition of the hook in the first half because we were unable to convert our chances. Until we solve that problem, which is unlikely this season, we can’t regard ourselves as real contenders

Thought we were coasting until Kwasnik got himself sent off. Equal amounts of stupidity by Williams and Kwasnik.
Both MV goals Ryan was at fault but I still rate him as a great prospect.
I thought Sainsbury was pretty good but crossing is poor (like 3 or 4 others) and one moment when he failed to clear his lines showed his lack of experience.
Dutchy was superb as usual. Rose and Wilko were also good.
Our mids did well and even Hutcho was reasonable, although he got caught on the ball twice in second half due to lack of awareness/pace.
Simon worked his arse of and Kwas was typical Kwas.
MOM Dutchy 3pts, Rose 2pts, Simon 1pt.

We were the better side and can easily make top two but shooting and crossing is so poor for such a good side.

Williams is a tool.

Sorry for the negative post. I usually try to see the good rather than the faults in players (even Hutchi and Kwas ;)) , but last night I was so pissed off I could not help myself and lashed out.

It is just that the I could see the goals coming as soon as we went down to 10.
I have seen too many of Arnie's teams defending deep to protect a lead and get punished, I have seen Ryan spill too many balls even in warm ups, I have seen shit refereeing, I have seen Muscat get away with shit and I have seen our players give away too many unnecessary yellow cards. All these things came together in a perfect storm last night and bit us in the bum.

To the positives. Melbourne scared me pregame, and looked like they were finishing the season with a wet sail especially, with Pedj and Griffiths missing. We owned them in the first half and should have been 2 up at the break.

Very impressed with Sainsbury. A bit hesitant but he has the goods. Left and right backs are such important positions and good players are so hard to find, I am more than happy.

Maybe I have been comparing Ryan to Danny at a similar stage which is a little unfair. He is a great shot stopper and should improve. Get a cricketer who fields in slips to teach him soft hands.

With Kwassie out next week I hope they give Bernie a run up front rather than putting McBreen and Simon together. I am afraid that combo just does not work.

I think Arnie telling Perez to play higher led to him going too far. In the first half he seemed to be playing more as a striker than playmaker. I am sure the formation will click.

I still think we can beat anyone and will be there at the end.
