Ryan gets a kick from window of opportunity:
gettyimages-579455772.jpg

Australia's Mat Ryan hopes that the arrival of a new coach who wants a major focus on playing out from the back will enhance the goalkeeper's kicking game and earn him a regular spot in the Valencia team.

Ryan, who moved to La Liga from Belgium's Club Brugge at the start of last season, admits that his first taste of Spanish football was a learning curve.

However he is adamant that his new experience on and off the field will make him a more complete footballer and a regular starter for Los Che.

Ryan started last season brilliantly, helping Valencia overcome Monaco to qualify of the UEFA Champions League, but he later got injured and subsequently lost his place to Brazilian Diego Alves.

The team struggled to leave an impression in La Liga, finishing in the lower half of the table.

Valencia have a new coach in Pako Ayestaran, who has already laid the foundations for a playing style that comprises a more attacking game starting from the very back.

Which is where a goalkeeper like Ryan should come in handy.

The Socceroos custodian has become as strong with his feet as he is with his hands and Ayestaran should look kindly on Sydney-born Ryan when it comes to settling on a first team.

"Our coach's style of play is one of pure football in terms of playing out from the back," Ryan said from the Netherlands where the squad wrapped up a pre-season camp.

"I've already noticed the difference in his will to want us to play out from the back more than we did in the previous year and it has pretty much been the basis of our training sessions so far.

"I feel a lot more settled and a sense of belonging in the team now with the improvement of my Spanish and being able to converse more and get along with my teammates.

"I think that's transferred into my feeling when I'm out on the pitch with them that I think they trust me more and they feel more secure with me back there than they did at times last year obviously with an unknown new player and furthermore a foreigner.

"I'm happy with my kicking game but I think there is always room for improvement in all areas and aspects of play.

"Not one situation is ever the same. As a player you're always faced with a different situation when you have a striker bearing down on you or you have the ball at your feet and you have to play out.

"You then have to go through the process of analysing, taking a decision, reacting and/or executing what you would like to do."

Valencia will be under the microscope again after a tumultuous season that saw two coaches sacked and the club's fan base become restless as the desired results on the field failed to materialise.

There were even sporadic calls for the club to reduce the number of "foreign mercenaries" who were not delivering, it was claimed.

But Ryan has been immune to the often savage criticism and his standing among the Valencia faithful was strengthened recently when he gave a full interview in Spanish, less than a year since joining the club.

"The club from what they tell me are very happy with me and I have five years on my contract so at this moment I'm focused and committed on making that spot at this historic club mine," he said.

_____________________________
Ryan is an ambitious young man and is determined to make the most of a career that has taken him from Sydney's western suburbs to one of the capitals of European football.
______________________________

He is driven by a fierce determination to become as good and successful as he can be so he would be able to look back on a career laden with trophies.

La Liga, seen by many as the strongest and most glamorous league in the world, provided him with a litmus test.

"On the pitch I learned how hard it was to win a game at this level," he explained.

"All the teams have quality individuals with flair and can produce unthinkable things more often than what happens in, say, the league in Belgium I played in.

"I learnt that at a big club like Valencia the competition also lies within your own team to win your position, as the quality of players is so high that one bad day or performance could mean the loss of your spot, so the margin for error is really small."

"I'm always giving my all for whoever I'm representing whether it be my national team or my club team.

"We only have the luxury of being footballers for so long and my goal is trying to create as many life long memories as I can.

"And the best way to do that is by having success in terms of winning things. The memories of the Asian Cup, the A-League championship with the Mariners and the Belgian Cup with Brugge will live with me for the rest of my life.

"So I'll be doing absolutely everything possible to help whatever team I'm playing for to win the competition in which we are playing and hopefully create a few more of these life-long memories."

Valencia start their La Liga campaign with a home game against Malaga on August 23 (AEST).

Then comes Australia's final push for a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Socceroos take on Iraq in Perth on 1 September in the first of 10 qualifiers that feature games against Saudi Arabia, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Japan.

Many fans expect Japan to provide the sternest test for Ange Postecoglou's men but Ryan is treating all opponents the same.

"I definitely don't think that at all about the qualifiers," he said when asked if too much emphasis is being placed on the two big matches with the Japanese.

"We always prepare with the same respect for the opposition no matter who they are.

"I think common sense would tell you the minute you don't do that is the moment you get punished so we prepare with our game plan for every match just the same no matter who we are playing."

Rogic impresses as Barca cruise to victory over Celtic:

Rogic came off the bench and played the entire second half against the Spanish champions, with many praising the Aussie's performance.

Argentina superstar Messi, playing for the first time since missing a penalty in Argentina's Copa America final shootout defeat to Chile, managed 45 minutes while Suarez - top scorer in La Liga last term - lasted until the hour mark.

Barca were already 3-1 up at half-time. Arda Turan's excellent strike and a comical own goal from Efe Ambrose, either side of Leigh Griffiths taking advantage of some woeful defending, put Barca 2-1 ahead before Munir El Haddadi was also on the scoresheet before half-time.

All in all it was a good workout by the La Liga champions, who took their foot off the gas somewhat after the break, and they next meet Premier League holders Leicester City on Thursday morning (AEST).

Screenshot_2016-07-31-14-11-05-1_zpsp0iuobov.png

Luis Enrique fielded an experimental back-line and a misunderstanding between centre-back pairing Jose Martinez and Jeremy Mathieu almost handed Celtic the lead within 15 seconds, with Patrick Roberts aiming just wide after picking up a loose ball.

It was Barca that struck first in the 11th minute, though. Aleix Vidal brilliantly jinked his way down the Celtic right and cut back for Turan, whose well-struck effort from the edge of the box found the top right-hand corner.

However, a horror mistake from Martinez gifted Griffiths the equaliser as the defender's heavy first touch after Masip's pass left the Celtic striker with an open goal to make it 1-1.

Barca were quickly back in front after another defensive howler as Ambrose inexplicably diverted Juan Camara's harmless cross from the left past Craig Gordon.

Celtic looked dangerous early in the second half when Nadir Ciftci volleyed just over the crossbar after Moussa Dembele's clever touch set him up, while Tom Rogic fired narrowly wide from 20 yards out.

Denis Suarez – who made his first appearance since his return to Barcelona from Villarreal – was unfortunate not to add a fourth, with substitute goalkeeper Leonardo Fasan making a fine save to deny the midfielder.

Seemingly content with their run out, Barca eased off in the closing stages and the match ended 3-1.

I watched the game, it was this arvo and I think your mail on the 'hammy' is a bit off.

Austin was smashed in the opening minute by Athletico's newly signed CB, Uruguayan Emiliano Velazquez who came in studs up on his ankle and both players simultaneously collided knee's.

Photo below shows Austin laying on the ground clutching it whilst Berisha gives him a reach-around.

From FoxSports.com:

"The 25-year-old clashed knees with Atletico defender Emiliano Velazquez and eventually had to be substituted in the 25th minute. Austin was later cleared of serious injury, but Victory will be hoping he can recover as soon as possible for the team’s FFA Cup and A-League campaigns."

Personally, I think Austin realised he wasn't going to have another so called 'MOM' appearance against the Spaniards as he repotedly did against Juve (didnt see it) as he and the rest of Melb.Victory were outclassed from the get-go despite Austin recovering from his knock at 2mins to go on playing another 23 mins.

In fact he put a hip & shoulder on one of theirs and then just turned to the bench asking to be subbed off before sitting on his arse.

Fear. Thought Victory were headed for a hiding with the 'Stars' yet to come (but they all sat on the bench:)) only to turn it around in the 2nd half against the Ath.Madrid kids with their own Victory young'ins.

Lawrence Thomas MOM, hands down.

Thought I might try and brighten my day/night by doing this:

Anthony Kalik remains out with an injury as Hajduk Split defeated bottom side RNK Split 1-0 away from home. Hajduk sit third in the Croatian Prva Liga (Croatian Tier One) with 32 games to play.

Mustafa Amini played a full match as his side Aarhus GF lost to his old side and sixth placed Randers FC 1-2 at home. Aarhus sit fourth in the Superligaen (Denmark Tier One) with 30 games to play.

Mitch Duke remains out with an ACL injury as Shimizu S-Pulse defeated 19th (of 22) placed relegation threatened FC Gifu 2-0 at home. Shimizu sit fifth in J-2 (Japan Tier Two) and are 4 points within the promotion playoff places with 15 games to play.

Sadly no details are available on whether Adrian Pellegrino played for Nong Bua Pitchaya however they defeated 11th (of 12) placed Chonburi FC. Nong Bua Pitchaya are top of the Thai Division 2 Northern Region (Thailand Tier Three) with 4 games to play, and are two points clear of their nearest rivals in Phayao FC. It looks likely that Nong Bua Pitchaya will participate in the Thai Regional Championships as they have are three points and significant goal difference clear of falling out of the top two. From what I can gather the Thai Regional Championships are the winners and runners up of the 8 regional Thai 2 division leagues who then play each other home and away. The top three teams then get promoted to the Thai first division (actually the second division of Thai football).

PFA Successfully Protects the Rights of Pellegrino
28 July 20

Pellegrino-683x525.jpg

The PFA is pleased to confirm its success in safeguarding the rights of Adriano Pellegrino, ensuring the full payment of his contractual rights with Malaysian club Kedah FA.

Having secured close to $7M for members in the past four years alone through its representation and advocacy work, the successful prosecution of Pellegrino’s case brings to an end what was an extremely difficult period for the former Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners player.

Following the expiration of his contract with the Mariners in 2013, he joined Kedah. Weeks after he began training with the club it emerged that the Malaysian federation would not register him on account of having briefly played for the Mariners Academy immediately prior to joining Kedah.

After attempts to resolve the issue proved unsuccessful, the club refused to honour Pellegrino’s contractual obligations and the matter was referred to the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC). The DRC ruled in favour of the player, following which the club appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where the PFA was once again successful.

“It is such a relief for me,” said Pellegrino of the final decision. “It is a precedent for further players and clubs to not take contracts lightly, especially with Australian players.

“The key to me receiving my money was the work the PFA did. They put in place the safeguards for me and also did the work to ensure I eventually got what I was owed.”

Now playing in Thailand, Pellegrino said he was pleased to be able to put the matter behind him.

“My first concern when it all started, and when Kedah said the were not going to honour my contract, was not playing football. I hadn’t had a period of my life where I had not been playing.

“The second concern was they were saying they were ‘not paying me and you are out of here.’

“I had not received any payment for months so I was out of pocket for a lot. There were a lot of calls to Angela Collins [PFA General Counsel] to work out what to do next.

“The PFA’s support was so important. Australian players should be very grateful for the support they have from the PFA.”

JEDINAK'S PALACE CAPTAINCY STRIPPED:
gettyimages-533305002.jpg

Socceroo Mile Jedinak has had the captaincy at Crystal Palace stripped and handed to team-mate Scott Dann despite being described as 'legendary' by manager Alan Pardew.

UK Newspaper Croydon Advertiser reports that Pardew had handed the armband to Dann for their recent friendly with Fulham on Saturday, despite both players starting.

Despite starting only 16 games last season, Jedinak has been ever-present for the Eagles since 2012, leading them as captain to promotion and eventual consolidation in the premiership.

Alan Pardew confirmed the change via video on the club's website.

"I've decided to change the club captaincy," Pardew said.

"Mile has been legendary for this football club and a brilliant leader.

"But I thought it was time for a change and I think Scott will carry it well, and hopefully that proves to be the case."

Pardew is a dick !

Really wished that Mile could've 'come to terms' over his wages with Stoke City last January when SC offered the required $3Million to Palace to buy Jedinak during the transfer window.

Back then Pardew again called him a 'Club Legend' 3 months prior to offering up for sale after he led the club into promotion from the Championship.

After the Stoke deal fell through he said he wanted to prove himself & 'he did!', but only got his chances in the back half of the season, which was too little to late.

He needs to find another club .... now.

And with that, the big fella turns 32 today, so I wish him a Happy Birthday !

Russell Woodruffe (yes him) is playing for Redlands in the FFA CUP tonight.
Outstanding. I wore his kit in a Donny Parkes Cup match years back. He was friends with an old friend and met up with him and his missus for beers one away trip years ago too.
