New Central Coast Mariners marquee player Luis Garcia has promised there is plenty more in store after making a game-changing 30-minute cameo in Saturday night's 2-1 defeat to the Western Sydney Wanderers in Gosford.

The 37-year-old had not played competitively in more than 18 months but took no time settling into A-League life, giving the Mariners a huge spark after they looked destined to be soundly beaten by the ladder-leaders.

While questions were raised about whether the Spaniard could still cut it at such a competitive level, his first few touches of the ball allayed any doubts.

"I did what I know what to do and it's not that I tried something different, I just played the way I have always played," he said. "It was easy because the guys around me work with the way I play. They are fast players, they run a lot and they are looking for the ball. For a player like me who likes to look for those spaces, it's very good for me."

Garcia served warning with his first play of the night, an incisive forward pass that put the Wanderers on the back foot, before following that up minutes later with a brilliant through-ball that set Mitch Austin away down the left.

That move ended with Josh Bingham clipping an effort that goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne could only parry away, allowing a simple tap-in goal for Fabio Ferreira.

Garcia's tricky feet won a free-kick on the edge of the area soon after, and having trailed all night, he nearly propelled them within touching distance of three points.

But a red card to Nick Montgomery swung the game against the Mariners and Brendon Santalab ended up bagging a later winner.

The Spaniard admitted he was a "little bit" nervous coming out of retirement but loved every minute of his comeback.

"I feel good. It was only 30 minutes, and with one man less, it's not easy, but I think I did good work," he said. "It's like starting from the very beginning. But after I went on I felt all right. The crowd were helping me so much since I arrived and it was easy to start playing."

Having only arrived on Thursday, Garcia said he felt an instant chemistry with his teammates despite the lack of time together.

"We trained together only one time but we understood each other very well in the first few minutes," he said. "Even in the training, we had a couple of those moves that were quite the same and we were lucky today that we finished with that goal for the equaliser. The team was feeling very well at that point and we had another chance that, maybe, could have changed the result.

"It was a pity that, at the end, we conceded that goal."

While watching the first hour on the sidelines, Garcia said he identified various areas on the field where he could make an impact when he came on.

"I thought I could help because I could see the space between the lines and this is the way I want to play," he said. "I know how [Wanderers' midfielders] Dimas and Andreu play. We have players that like to have the ball. They don't have a lot of range around to run, so I knew I would have some chances. I think the first few minutes were quite OK."

The former Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool star reckoned it would not take long before he could start matches for the yellow and navy.

"Hopefully I should be able to, even without playing a lot of time," he said. "We spoke with the coach [Tony Walmsley] and it's not going to be easy to have a lot of minutes. But there's not many games left, so we cannot wait a month and a half."

What I did find amusing was Hutch giving him a talk before he came on.
Luis was probably thinking I know what the **** I'm doing.

Having Austin and Fab with their speed will definitely give him opportunities for more of those through balls

When Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth gave the order for cost cutting measures that would see as much as $1 million trimmed from the budget, he never expected to find himself opening his cheque book and splurging on a marquee player.

The bottom line has been crucial in the Englishman’s attempts over the past three or four seasons to get the Mariners out of a financial mire and he has been unwavering in his belief it is critical for the survival of the club.

As such, signing a marquee was never in the equation, until now. Which makes Charlesworth’s decision to invest, with the help of some funding from Football Federation Australia, so heavily in former Liverpool star Luis Garcia even more remarkable.

Garcia, who is reportedly getting around $50,000 per game for an 12-match stint, made his debut for the Mariners in a 30-minute cameo against the Wanderers in a 2-1 loss on Saturday night. The loss was disappointing but the club’s best home attendance (more than 13,000) in two seasons and the publicity leading into the match showed that they might well be on to a winner.

Sitting in the coffee lounge at the Crowne Plaza overlooking the idyllic surrounds of Terrigal beach, Charlesworth could barely contain his delight yesterday, though he admitted he is surprised by the positive reaction. He is happy not just for the Mariners but the entire competition.

“It is not just about the Mariners because I think the A-League needs a bit of stardust,” Charlesworth told The Australian. “I think the timing of it, the fact that no one else has got a proper marquee player, it kind of increased the impact in a way.

“If Sydney (FC) and Melbourne (Victory) have got big stars and Luis had come in, it would have been a story but not as big as what it is now.

“We looked at it and said, ‘well, it’s really going to put the Mariners on the map’, and it has. We have had something like 10 million hits globally through social media.

“We looked at the commercials and figured we could probably break even through this ... probably, we don’t know yet but time will tell. I am kind of surprised to be honest.

“It (a marquee) wasn’t part of the game plan a couple of months ago. It happened very quickly.”

Charlesworth was not afraid to admit he might have got it wrong with his stand against a marquee for the Mariners.

“Yeah, I do regret it now that I never entertained the idea before,” he said. “I just didn’t think it was feasible.

“We never looked at it as we were cutting our costs. We reduced a million dollars off our wage bill the last year or so, so going out and spending more on a player than you have ever done before it was kind of out of the question.

“But yeah, we should have done it earlier.”

The interesting part now is that Charlesworth says the Garcia situation has whetted the appetite in terms of future of marquees at the Mariners.

“Absolutely we will look at it more closely now,” he says with a smile. “What really turns me on about this project is that we are building a brand that is globally known, not only in terms of the Mariners but the A-League as well.

“I want to see the A-League grow and be bigger than what it is. I want it to be on the map, I want to be proud of it.

“We are already talking to agents and players about next season. Of course, it has to be the right fit. Luis is fantastic. He is polite, community-minded, ever helpful. He wants to do things for the club and the game here.

“We need to broaden our search now for someone who might just be at the end of his career in Europe, but it has to be a name people know. Of course, we are not going to be stupid about it. Paying $4 million a season (like Sydney did for Alessandro Del Piero) is not on.

“But there are plenty of quality name players out there who I am sure would be a great fit.”

First I've seen a figure mentioned.

Seems pricey for us.

Social media hits are dollars but they can be attractive to sponsors

$600k for the rest of the year sounds fine to me. If the corporate dollars stack up and we build awareness and profile for coming seasons, it might well pay for itself.

600 so 1.2 for a year not bad actually... also good to read FFA kicked in a little ..

2 million hits about him thats massive ...

MC is turning out not to be quite the demon some on the forum painted him as ...

If he gets us at break even and can afford a marquee ... I am happy even if we lose one or two games a year until the fan base is built up not to need them...

We also now have a pretty serious contact in Europe that has some pretty good friends we could hire as our next marque.

I'm hoping he sticks around for next year too though.

I bristle a little bit at this. There are some of us who didn't paint him as a demon, but we questioned his business decisions.

E.G. the North Sydney debacle - I attacked the idea that it would be profitable because I couldn't see how it made any sense to erode our core support base to chase another market that is already largely committed and playing out of a facility that's frankly crap.

At no point did I say he's a bad guy, let alone a demon, but I certainly questioned the logic. I also worried about what it meant for his commitment to the Coast over the longer term, especially given there'd been rumours of selling to consortia from other markets.

I have also been critical of signings (as have most of us!) but I've been anything but critical of the idea of getting the playing list leaned down and signing a bunch of talented kids with potential to grow.

I realise this could be seen as conflicting with the idea of signing marquees, but it's actually one of those things that might be a real "spice in the stew" kind of thing - it's still hearty but it makes what might otherwise be a bit dreary a lot more exciting and attractive. If he can get the numbers to stack up, all the better.

In the end, if the numbers *don't* stack up, we're toast.

He's having a go and demonstrating a bit of ambition for the Central Coast and I think everyone can get behind that.

He's also going to some effort (through Shaun) to explain the logic behind moving a couple of home games to other grounds and in taking us into his trust on this I think he's earning some trust in return.

The long and short of it is that he's giving us a fair crack, so we should let him have a fair crack.

I did not give any names but a number of posters went all out and while they may have not used the word demon they certainty made it clear what they through of him and his plans... I I can't recall any names just how some posts were hhhmmmmm not very pleasant with his character / motives / knowledge and understanding called into question...

He's having a better crack with better people around him.

It's still simple, we must put bums on seats to get this club profitable.

As he said the other night he is not a sheik. We've now been warned.

The way he handled North Sydney was very bad but things are looking brighter

To be fair, many would've been guided by media reports lacking in facts and accuracy
Not quite. Most were guided by MCs inability to communicate a clear and consistent message, especially in response to discontent.

Most could not understand the true dire situation the club was in when he took over and were not prepared to give him credit but kept looking for ulterior motives for all his actions.

Haha....that was me for a start.
I'm starting to forgive him....slowly.
Can he lend us enough for a specialist coach (Dutchy) to sort out our defending.

Is that potentially because the right people weren't in place at the club when he first came on board?
