Considering the massive changes to the team and playing away to that passionate crowd I thought we did quite well.

Pellegrino - Sorry. just don't rate him at all. Tries hard enough, but the quality is just not there. Some terrible passing.
Griffiths - Jury's out. Some woeful turn-overs. Good to know that we have options for the under-performing Rose though.
Fitzgerald - Not yet convinced.
Caceres - Enough to suggest that he has a good future. Disappeared for a substantial period though, so question marks about his intensity
Bozanic - Played his heart out as usual. Good game.
Hutcho - Solid without being inspiring. As Captain, needs to be inspirational
McGlinchey - Looked world class when he came on. Until the penalty. DOH!
Duke - Tried hard but was butchered all night without protection from the whistle-shy ref.
Montgomery - Looked OK but not on long enough to rate
Ibini - Typical Berni. Can look a million dollars one minute, a cart horse the next.
Defence - Generally solid as usual, but repeatedly beaten for speed. Some sloppy turn-overs.

The difference was in the finishing. Theirs was sublime, ours, apart from Patrick's goal, was ordinary.

i can still see us coming up empty handed this season but that's not because we're terrible or anything, it's that when it comes to the crunch we weren't the best.

I can definitely see that we are still a great side & i reckon we will give the seat a shake.

The thing that pisses me off is the missed penalties. Arnie said last night Patrick was meant to take it & yet he didn't. What the f**k? Why are our players not following instruction in this?

These have cost us at least 4 points over the last few weeks. It's highly embaressing.

Hopefully Arnie has realised by now that we are very capable of beating all of these teams. The so called "skillful, fast and bigger budget" of these clubs has not been reflected on the pitch as the press makes it out to be. If you've watched the game and taken your own conclusions instead of listening and consuming what foxsports commentators say, you'll probably agree that we're more than capable of qualifying to the next round. Yesterday, Arnie started the game by fielding 6 aussie x under 21s players which between all of them don't even earn what 1 x Kashiwa player earns. These inexperience players ( at international level & some at HAL level ) didn't let us down against some of the best that Japan has to offer plus 3 experience and quality brasilian players. We were never second best during the game and tbh their goals were created by our errors which Domingues took full advantage of.Very promising performances by Caceres ( imo our best while on the field).Should be given more game time and no doubts that he should be in the starting 11 in the very near future. I would like Arnie to give him more freedom to push forward.Hutch or Mont should play fully defensive.Dukey enthusiastic as usual.It was difficult for him due to our defensive structure and approach.Despite the result,full credit to our players.With the full squad + changes and a more aggresive attacking approach implemented by Arnie specially for home games, I don't see why we shouldn't make it to the next round.

Arnold needs to back his team to WIN all games! They (Japanaese team) were NOT that much better than CCM! Nor was the Korean team the previou round! For some reason, Arnold does not believe in his players and sends the wrong message to his team. Caceres was very, very good....composure, time on the ball and a delightful passing game (made it look simple). On the other hand, Pellegrino was very poor (I am being kind..sorry!), could not string passes together. I do not know why it took Arnold so long to bring on McGlinchy.

AN example of Arnold's lack of confidence is when CCM attacked, we did so with jus 4 players - no overlapping fullbacks, no other midfielders (obvious Hutch and Caceres were not allowed to go forward)...therefore, limited opportunities.

Anyway, some promising signs but plenty of work to do ...

Pellers & Griffith last night really turned the ball over alot. Hutch had a few shockers as well.

I think Caceras would have been much better with McGlinchey infront of him. Pellers did not come back for the ball much at all & when he did he pretty much lost it straight away.

We really are missing Tommy right now.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure we won't come up empty handed. I reckon we've got the Most Successive Penalty Misses trophy sewn up.

Mariners fault line exposed​

The loss was not unexpected although the scoreline seems a little harsh. The real story of this game is the fifth consecutive penalty miss: one miss is unfortunate, a second is annoying, but a fifth takes us to the heart of the Mariners' weakness. One miss is a zit on the backside; a fifth is to expose the fault line in the character of the side: the lack of killer instinct in front of goal. It gives credence to the reputation of the Mariners as chokers when the pressure is on.
Arnie had wrung his changes, Anthony Caceres starting in front of a back four that included four centre backs; there was to be no opportunity for youngsters Morton and MacDonald to show their attacking skills. Duke was the lone gun up front with Bozanic and Fitzgerald wide and Pellegrino making a rare start. The Mariners players, resplendent in pink, looked for all the world like a huge human cup cake as they met for the huddle before the game.
Arnie came for a point and for an hour looked like he might get it. The Mariners were calm and organised and, taking advantage of Patrick Zwaanswijk’s headed goal, they seemed in with a chance. Swift passing from Kashiwa after a Mariners move broke down – exactly the type of goal scored by WSW and Sydney FC – brought the Mariners undone for the equaliser.
Half time came and 1-1 seemed fair enough but on the hour mark the cracks began to appear. Moments after McGlinchey had replaced the struggling Pellegrino a misunderstanding between Ryan and Patrick gave a chance on the edge of the box which Caceres blocked; minutes later a lazy pass from Hutchinson set Kashiwa away again and this time the shot hit the side netting. The Mariners were unable to retain possession, McGlinchey was anonymous and Duke feeding off scraps, and Kashiwa made their superiority pay when Sainsbury failed to move up for the offside and two players were in position to convert the cross for 2-1.
McGlinchey finally showed all his skills but his cross was too deep for Ibini who had replaced Fitzgerald. Monty replaced the injured Caceres - who had a decent game - but to little effect.
The third goal came from an excellent volley and that seemed the end of the game but there was one last cruel twist for the Mariners as Duke was clumsily brought down. Penalty!
A penalty is a great opportunity; a gift wrapped chance to score, to bury the opposition; but not for the Mariners. When Arnie spoke of senior players taking responsibility I expected Patrick or Hutch to step up but instead it was the brave McGlinchey who stood nervously over the ball. McGlinchey is one of the Mariners best players so I guess that makes him a senior player but I have said before he is not someone I would ever put money on to score from the spot (not that we seem to have many options) and so I wasn’t surprised at the feeble out come.
His miss can only emphasise a growing lack of confidence in the side; if he had scored the Mariners spirits would have lifted. They return to the Coast to play Brisbane with all the likely Finals rivals knowing that all they have to do is defend deep and wait for the penalty shoot-out. It should not be this way.

I think we've got a good chance of picking up the bog seat; will we win the play-off? Depends on when it is.
I'd rather see someone else getting crucified trying to be competitive in two comps at the pointy end of our season.
The times Adelaide were doing OK in Asia, they were stone motherless (or nearly so) in the A-League; they were only concentrating on one comp.
I'd rather us being up top of the A-League and concentrating on it.
