A-League Transfers and Rumours

Culina: I Am Coming Home To Oz

SOCCEROO Jason Culina has confirmed he WILL be signing for Gold Coast United and making a return to play in Australia in the A-League next season.
Culina broke the news on his Dutch club's website as he admitted he'd be leaving PSV Eindhoven at the end of his contract in May.

Gold Coast United have been pursuing Culina for months to be their marquee signing and skipper for their debut season.

Although the deal has looked close - and occasionally inevitable - it was put in jeopardy earlier this week when PSV tabled a reportedly bigger rival offer.

Dinamo Zagreb also came in late, looking to tempt Culina to Croatia, but despite the brinksmanship, Gold Coast United and the A-League emerged victorious.

Culina's return is a huge boost for the A-League and sends out a massive message to all Aussies playing overseas for everyone from Harry Kewell down.

I want to make a fresh start and I am ready for a new challenge," Culina said today. "I am the first [current] international who returns to Australia and I am keen to promote the national competition and raise the standard.

"Players have returned to Australia from Europe before, but that was usually at the end of their careers. I will be 29 when we return. Thats why I was anxious to complete a three-year deal.

Culina admitted that it was not easy to turn down PSVs offer.

PSV is a great club and I felt flattered when they offered me a contract extension, but I had already made up my mind to return to Australia, he said.

Culina emphatically denied his family had persuaded him to go back to Down Under.

On the contrary," he insisted. "My wife loves life in the Netherlands and she feels at home here.

"She wanted me to stay with PSV, but I decided to follow my heart. I spent ten years in Holland and Im looking forward to the new challenge.

He added: I may be wearing the captains armband. The Gold Coast United manager wants to have a 22-man squad. Sixteen players have already closed a deal.

"But my first priority is to put in convincing displays for PSV the next five months. I won the Dutch title three times and want to give my all to the team before I return back home.

Here's hoping that Gold Coast play him in an "almost-No. 10-role" like he has at PSV - not this DM shit he's been saddled with for the Roos for too long now.....

Agree Serious. His attacking capabilities have been wasted for too long.

He has been a victim of circumstances in the NT, having to play under coaches that have Cahill in that role (there for his constant goal threat). He has also been the only one for quite some time capable of going back to the defence getting the ball and taking it upfield, which takes him out of that No. 10 position.

So even when Cahill is not there he is relied upon to get the ball from Neill before he hoofs it.

Rough, but do you see what I'm getting at??  He can stay back a little on corners, let Cahill do his thing in the box, and get any headed away stuff - he's got a fairly mean shot from 25 yards.  And it's a lot more advanced then where he's been lately - some games he's been slotted in _behind_ Vinnie.

Is that the first transfer fee that big for one of our HAL guys??

He is the first player to be valued at $1m IIRC.

Eugene Dadi has also signed a new contract and a Press Conference will be held tomorrow in Perth to confirm this.

I reckon Dadi is bloody fantastic. Brilliant, brilliant nose for goal, positional play is top shelf and the way he holds the ball up is excellent. Good news for the Glory and I look forward to big crowds in the west next season like the good old days. Very happy for the club.

Gold Coast United are looking a big threat next season if they can get their act together and keep their key players healthy enough.

Smeltz as striker and Culina in behind as CM, will be pretty hard to contain on a counter attack, if Miron can manage the team good enough.

Brad Porter to GC United? Who writes these articles? And why do new clubs like our colours so much? There's only one yellow team in my eyes

The new club's colours will be predominantly yellow and blue, and Palmer also confirmed that the club had secured Hartlepool striker Brad Porter, who has played a handful of Socceroos games, as well as big Dutch defender Bas Van den Brink.

With all their signings one wonders how they intend to stay under the cap. I realise Culina is exempt but their other signing would also command top dollar... JVS, Griff, Smeltz etc and now this dutch bloke Bas Van den Brink who wouln't travel to Australia for peanuts...
