It's my number 1 destination and I would take Robbie. He is one of my all time favourite players. Sure he is not the Fowler of old but I'd love to see him play

Gold Coast lure Culina for $3.6m

JASON CULINA will become the first starting member of the Socceroos to return to the A-League after the dynamic midfielder yesterday agreed to a three-year deal to become the marquee player at Gold Coast United.

Capped 36 times for his country, Culina spurned offers from his current team, Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, as well as Croatian powerhouses Dinamo Zagreb, to sign with the newly created club. The deal is a landmark for the competition, which has regularly been overlooked by Socceroos players in favour of staying in Europe.

This one will be interesting.. I have heard Miron didn't want Culina..  Culina has said for months he wanted to go to the Gold Coast, Miron was the one delaying negotiations!

Miron is such an enigma

Why wouldn't you want Culina? With Yorke the biggest signing in A-League history.

I am upset about this move. A starting Socceroo should be plying his trade in higher league in Europe. Weakens our world cup team IMO.

Who do you believe his father or Gold Coast United.....

Jason Culina remains undecided on his future, including Gold Coast United

JASON Culina's father, former Sydney FC coach Branko Culina, has denied claims from Gold Coast United that the Australia midfielder will join the A-League newcomers from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg said this week Culina was set to become the club's marquee player for next season, but Branko Culina said his son was now considering offers to stay in Europe.

"There has been discussions with a number of clubs including Gold Coast but PSV have now offered him a new three-year contract and Dynamo Zagreb in Croatia have also expressed an interest in signing him,'' Culina said.

"He's 28 and at the prime of his career and this contract is probably his most important so he is taking his time and considering his options.

"In some ways he would be silly to come back from playing Champions League football, but if he does decide to come and play in the A-League then he needs to do it now when he is at his prime."

Great Australian players such as Paul Okon and possibly John Aloisi have returned and have been past their best and in some ways it has hurt their reputations in the eyes of the Australian public.

After signing on for a reported $1.2 million two-year contract with Sydney FC, Aloisi has failed to deliver in the A-League the form that made him an integral part of the Socceroos lineup - Culina would hate to see his son suffer a similar fate.

"It is terrible to see what John Aloisi has been going through recently, he should be remembered as a great player who scored the most important goal in Australian football history, not struggling in the A-League.

"I would hate for Jason to go through that. He needs to be a pioneer and be the first Socceroo to come back at his prime to play in the A-League or not do it at all."

"From a family point of view it would be great to have him and the grandchildren back home but, from a football perspective, playing at the highest level, especially with the World Cup coming up, would be better for him.''

He should stay at PSV. We need him to be playing at the highest level possible until 2010

Sources in North Queensland seem to think that Robbie Fowler will sign with them when he comes out to Australia in just over a week, as their new Marquee.

Carney to stay in Europe
carney_1231458124.jpg

Central Coast Mariners have been thwarted in their bid to rescue Socceroo David Carney from his Sheffield United purgatory, with sources close to the utility insisting he will not be returning home to bolster the clubs first foray into the Asian Champions League.

Instead, the 25-year-old who has made just two appearances for the Blades this season after being frozen out by boss Kevin Blackwell, will remain in Europe, with a loan deal - or a permanent transfer - to a club in Holland, Belgium or Germany likely to be sealed before the end of the January transfer window.

While committed to returning to the A-League later in his career, the former Sydney FC winger believes his football future, most particularly his hopes of staying in Pim Verbeeks World Cup plans, will be best served by remaining offshore.

The source told SBS: The interest from the Mariners is well documented but David has no intentions of coming back at this stage.

He doesnt feel the time is right now but he is committed to moving away from Bramall Lane because he wants to be playing regularly.

His main priority going forward is to make sure he keeps his Socceroos spot and he knows that wont be easy if hes not playing regular club football.

Carney has already knocked back the offer of a three-year deal at a top flight Norwegian club, with the source adding: Theres plenty of interest out there. Its just a matter of getting into a place where he will be happy, feel wanted and be a part of the first team set up.

Carney, almost ever-present during Verbeeks 13-month reign, has become a cause celebre for the Dutchman, who said last week: David is having problems getting football at Sheffield and knows he needs to move on, for his own sake.

Its a bonus for me that while he doesnt play for his club he always does well for his country, and I wonder how much better he would do when he's at a club that use him regularly.

He has never let me, or the team down, and he continues to impress me. I dont know where he will move to but if it where somewhere like Holland I think he would benefit from that in the same way that Luke Wilkshire (formerly with FC Twente) and Brett Holman (AZ Alkmaar) have.

Able to operate as a left back, his initial role under Verbeek in the absence of Scott Chipperfield, Carney is also at home as an attacking left-sided midfielder, or even in a more central role.

He has made 17 appearances for his country and has appeared in eight of Australias last 10 games.

The source close to Carney added: He knows he needs to get something sorted out soon and his management company are looking into various possibilities. His focus is helping Australia qualify for South Africa 2010 and then being a big part of it when they get there.

Hes not panicking or anything but he knows he doesnt have a future at Sheffield United (where he is contracted until mid 2010).

Meanwhile, former Olyroo Adrian Leijer is set to be loaned out by Fulham, to either a Championship or League One outfit after struggling to breakthrough at the west London club.

However boss Roy Hodgson is not looking to sell the rangy defender, whose Craven Cottage contract doesnt expire for another 18 months.
