Perth Glory go Dutch in finals bid

Victor Sikora

Perth Glory have gone Dutch in a bid to keep their ailing A-League finals hopes alive, signing Holland International Victor Sikora as a replacement for injured Brazilian playmaker Amaral.

Sikora, who played six times for the Netherlands, will arrive in Perth this Saturday and could be available for Glory's Boxing Day clash with Adelaide at Members Equity Stadium.

A long-term hamstring injury to Amaral severely hampered coach Dave Mitchell's plans this year, prompting the move for Sikora

Mitchell said he would assess the lively attacker/midfielder with a view to next season while his immediate contribution will also be pivotal

We have been proactive in our efforts to find quality players and there was an opportunity to bring Victor over and were delighted that it has worked out for everyone involved, Mitchell said.

It is disappointing that Amaral is sidelined but we havent just sat on our hands, Victor is someone who will definitely bring something to our squad, added Mitchell.

Sikora made name in his home country playing powerhouse Ajax, as well as Heerenveen and NAC Breda.

His time at Ajax included featuring in their 2002/03 and 2003/04 UEFA Champions League campaigns, and in the UEFA Cup.

Mitchell's observed the 30-year-old during a pre-season scouting mission and was immediately keen.

The pair remained in contact and after recently completing a stint with Major League Soccer club FC Dallas, Sikora made his move down under.

It has proved to be an ideal solution, being able to bring him in for a short space of time with the view to next season.  Im sure hell be able to add an extra spark to what has been some excellent football by the lads in recent weeks, said Mitchell.

Weve worked hard behind the scenes to make this happen and Im delighted that he is able to get here so quickly.

Victor is eager to get straight into action and with a home game on Boxing Day and a big crowd expected at Members Equity Stadium it could be a great opportunity to expose him to the A-League and the Perth Glory fans, Mitchell said.

Sikoras will have five matches to find his feet.

He is a very versatile player and can fill a few holes if needs be.  Hes played as a striker, in midfield and also out wide.

Victor brings experience from the highest levels in Europe and I know Glory supporters will be very happy watching him play, hes an exciting player, said Mitchell.

Great signing on paper. Could be another Charlie Miller. Like all A-League fans, I've come to know to wait and see before passing judgement.

i have to say generally (in terms of success in Australia)
european players > south american
i mean I love the Latin players etc. They r so much exciting (think Hernandez, Fred, Juninho, Cassio)- but for them you got the others that aren't as good as well know eg. Jardel
eurpean leagues tend to be more physically suitable than players from South America.
And looking at 2 successful South American imports- they first made a detour past Europe first (Juninho and to a lesser extent Reinaldo)

Are you Kidding... There has been no European Import to set this league alight yet. Fyfe best one so far, lets hope this guy sorts out the Glory to the scum the last.

European players and south american players are not groups. Players are individuals. They may be slightly cheaper from south america. As they would again be slightly cheaper from africa. But the quality of players from those places depends on who you bring in, and on what money, not where they are from

This is a falicy. You bring in a european hard man he is going to be stronger than a light footed latino. But the reverse is also true.

In the SMH there is a article saying next month that all of our partners are meeting in Malta and we are sending some officials lyall said he is looking for 1 or 2 good players for the ACL.
Quote from the Article:
"Player movment and opportunities will be high on the agenda as well as commercial."says Gorman who will attend the Malta."We know we have to improve our squad for asia and we have to give [bringing in one or two new players] serious consideration."
Another interesting part of the article is that Bojic and Macca are in doubt and osman two.

he may only be 30 but if he still was as good as he was or half as good he wouldnt have signed for a next to bottom table a-league team. hopefully for perth they get the best out of him but i doubt that they will. i can see another flop former great player trying to make a final buck before retirement but we'll see

Mile leaving may put us in the position to sign Salley now as a drect replacement. Although I hope not. I'm sure there are better options out there but not too sure where

Salley would be a useful squad player IMHO.

However, we do have a habit of uncovering hidden gems or going for the blockbuster signing.

In Lyall we trust
