Interesting if true ............ and great news

http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/79502,neills-bid-for-sydney-club.aspx

SOCCEROO skipper Lucas Neill is putting together a bid to launch a new Sydney A-League club and aims to finish his career there - possibly as soon as next year.
His agent, Paddy Dominguez has spoken of Neills passion and determination to start a new Sydney-based club to play in the A-League.

West Ham United captain Neill is part of a group looking to establish a new Sydney franchise - and he could be part of the A-league as soon as next year.

His contract with the Hammers expires next year and at the age of 31, he could still return to Australia at young enough age to have a big impact on the local league.

He remains a Hammer for now but the player's agent says Australia is still very much in the defender's thoughts.

Dominguez told Setanta Sports: "As far as Lucas is concerned, he has a huge emotional attachment to this.

"When he eventually quits Europe he'll come back here (to Australia) to play for the franchise.

"As far as Lucas is concerned, he is determined to put something back into the game in this country.

"Lucas has shown with his player scholarship scheme in the Manly district that he wants to make a significant contribution. He wants to leave a lasting legacy for Australian soccer.

"I can tell you that some of the names we are dealing with at the moment will blow your mind. But the real aim of the club is to develop and foster local football.

"Our charter is to have, within three or four years of our existence, a starting line-up made up of at least eight local players. That's the dream, that's the intention."

Neill's A-League bid is being put together by Dominguez's firm, Inspire Sports Group, and has been working behind the scenes with the FFA.

He added: "We have been working tirelessly on this for nine months and we are ready to go as soon as the 2009-2010 season.

"It is an exciting concept and we believe it will be great for the sport in this country."

Not to sure whether I am going to hate Palmer in the future but loved what he says here about the Gold Coast and Football.

The line I liked the  best was "In a chilling message to rival codes, the $2.5 billion man will unleash the full force of his intellect, resources and sheer will to turn a whimsical fancy into a reality."

There is more on the link if you wish to read.

NOT content with pledging to mould fledgling franchise Gold Coast United into the A-League's benchmark club, billionaire owner Clive Palmer has vowed to help catapult soccer to the top of Australia's sporting pyramid.

Aloi$i will probably want that marquee spot

Yeah agreed, but they may not want him if he doesn't get enough games out this season...and also this newer consortium has the bucks it sounds to go better than Aloi$i...

How bout 90 million Euros for Ronaldo Mr Palmer?
I believe it's always been his "childhood dream" to play in the A league  ;)

From the age, looks like a second melbourne team, second Sydney team, GC & NQ

Sidwell bid tipped to win second franchise
Jake Niall
July 25, 2008

THE unexpected withdrawal of one of the leading bids for Melbourne's second soccer franchise has left the syndicate headed by businessman and racing identity Peter Sidwell as the clear favourite to win the new licence.

The bid, headed by clothing and property entrepreneur and ex-Carlton Football Club director Colin De Lutis, is understood to have pulled out of the race, putting the Sidwell group in the van to secure the licence to operate Melbourne's second A-League team.

While Football Federation Australia received many bids for Melbourne's second licence, the Sidwell and De Lutis bids were understood to be the most advanced and financially robust, with the De Lutis group having raised several million dollars in a consortium comprised mainly of wealthy young businessmen.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said last night that he would speak to De Lutis about the status of the bid.

"I can't confirm that," Buckley said. "I expect to be talking to Colin shortly about the remaining steps in the bid process."

De Lutis could not be reached for comment last night.

Another bid, to be known as Southern Cross FC, was headed by former South Melbourne president Jim Marinos, but was not representing the strong Greek-based club.

It is understood that the Sidwell consortium includes former Melbourne Victory shareholder Michael Catalano, a prominent Victorian soccer identity and owner of Adriatic Furniture, and rock promoter Andrew McManus.

The De Lutis and Sidwell bids were broadly-based, without ties to a particular ethnic community, in keeping with FFA's determination to ensure that the A-league is freed from the ethnic identity politics that dogged Australian soccer at the highest level for decades.

Sidwell has a strong background in the communications industry, is a leading owner of racehorses and negotiates the contracts of Collingwood coach Michael Malthouse. The Sidwell group planned a presence in Casey, in the outer south-eastern suburbs.

New Melbourne and Sydney teams are set to enter the A-League in the summer of 2010-2011, with Gold Coast and Townsville teams slated to join the competition in 2009-2010. The competition will expand from its current eight teams to 10 and then 12 teams in 2010-2011.

The introduction of a second Melbourne team is to coincide with the opening of the new rectangular stadium at Olympic Park, which will house the Melbourne Victory, the second FFA team and the Melbourne Storm. The AFL's Melbourne is considering backing out of the previous board's plans to set up its administrative headquarters at the same Olympic Park venue.

FFA plans to announce the winner of the second Melbourne licence by late next month. Yesterday, FFA announced that the Townsville consortium headed by local businessman Don Mathieson had won the bid to operate the Townsville team.

Buckley said the Gold Coast bidding process was "well advanced" with an announcement expected within the next few weeks.

Public to choose Tassie's A-League logo

http://www.news.com.au/mercury/story/0,22884,24080405-13222,00.html

TASMANIA'S A-League soccer campaigners have released four team brand options as it looks to fulfill Football Federation Australia requirements.

The A-League Taskforce has already registered the name Tasmania United FC and is looking for public input to choose its branding, taskforce chairman John McGirr said yesterday.

The taskforce needs to be able to show the FFA that Tasmania has a suitable venue, is financially viable and has community support if it is to have a team up and running by the 2011 season.

"As far as demonstrating the community support, this branding exercise fits in," McGirr said.

"We've got a website where you can go and vote for one of the four brands we have come down to.

"We can track the numbers of that, so obviously if we only get 20 people voting, we will be a bit worried but if we get a couple of thousand, it demonstrates the extent of the interest at this early stage."

The logos were designed in Europe and the US, with the taskforce making sure no locals were involved.

"We just wrote them a very short brief, we didn't want to give them preconceived ideas," McGirr said.

"If you give them too much, you actually paint the whole thing for them."

McGirr said it would be a centralised team for training and administration purposes based in Hobart but the club was looking at Launceston's Aurora Stadium, Bellerive and North Hobart to play games.

He discussed the number of teams for the competition with the head of A-League operations, Rob Abernethy, during the Melbourne-Adelaide practice game in Launceston last Sunday.

"Basically, we are in the mix for two (licences) and I think there are about 10 syndicates all up bidding for the two spots," McGirr said.

"They (the FFA) will make a decision probably May or June next year."

A slightly expanded 10-team A-League kicks off next year, with North Queensland granted provisional inclusion this week.

FFA boss Ben Buckley indicated more teams would be added to the A-League in season six for a possible 12-club competition by 2011.

Logo voting can be done at www.focussedstrategy.com/ALeague/

Wouldn't mind seeing what some of you think about the logos.

Personally 1 and 2 are horrible and 3 is a bit too basketball for my liking.

Great to hear Tassie are trying for a team. I hope all this talk doesn't mean a 2nd division soon though.

Would really like the league to get to 12 or 14 teams before a 2nd division and maybe wait 5 - 10 years.
