We have to stop using terms like "Japs" and "Chinamen".

It's 2014, not 1950. A lot of people are going to find this sort of language offensive.

:soapbox:

so what should we call the japs ? I like the samuri blue . but only when im cheering for them in a world cup.
I called adp an old girl in Italian when he was close .
frankly i'll be calling any chinese a lun yow in the game and drinking a peasu after one

How hard is it to say 'Japanese'?

How hard is it to say 'Japanese'?

. about as hard as Australian ... but most are happy with the Aussie shortening ... because we are generally lazy and that is what we do

. i love a good political correction debate ... in the interests of being politically correct it has people posting a whole heap of terms which are not politically correct - is that ironic, intentional or educational?

Japanese. Japs is a derisive term better left in WWII.

. nothing like a reference to 70 year old propaganda to shatter my innocence ... i read it as a simple abbreviation. particularly on a type-based forum where ref is a suitable abbreviation but ass ref can make me giggle

. i find it interesting when people are 'offended' by a term directed at someone else ... and the person (or group of people) it was directed to is (are) not offended. not that i am suggesting that is necessarily the case here

no or a wop . I wouldn't use slope head or nip either .but im comfortable with jap as a shortening of japanese

There is a difference between the words Thai and Jap:

    • a member of the largest ethnic group in Thailand.
    • a person of Thai descent.
  2. 2.
the official language of Thailand, spoken by over 20 million people, mainly in central Thailand. It belongs to the Tai language group.
Jap
[jap] noun Slang: Disparaging and Offensive.
Japanese.
Jap,
noun & adjective

Short for Japanese.

It may well be Aussie to shorten words but if on occasion that results in a term with offensive and racist connotations then perhaps it is better to avoid that word. Some may feel this is being politically correct, others may see it as simply showing due respect and common decency.

The word may have its origins buried in the past but the current meaning continues to be offensive.

I find it interesting when people stand by and do/say nothing.
When is the right time to speak out? When deportations start?

When is the right time to speak out?

. honestly, i think i'd prefer to unwittingly say something offensive and then be educated rather than try to hide within a politically correct vocabulary ... scared of accidentally offending someone

. if you are Japanese and you were offended by my interpretation of Jap being an abbreviation (when apparently it is actually an offensive term) then i apologise

. to me, it is also worth noting that the 'accepted' meaning of terms does change over time

This world has gone a little to far IMO with this so-called racism stuff. Sometimes people looking for something when it's not there. Left un-noted no one wold have blinked. Commented on has now taken 2 pages.

There was no nasty conintation. It was as stated lazy Aussie language. Sorry if you are offended none intended. But when writting a post I'm not going to refer to the dictionary every time (probably should). However I won't stop being a lazy Aussie.

Had I said shit mullet man. No one would care but you can't call a Chinese person a chinamen is going a little to far IMO.

Personally, I didn't think you or anyone else were being deliberately offensive. As for "Left un-noted no one would have blinked", I'd bet quite a few noticed but didn't want to make waves.
I was just thinking that the Mariners with their profile in Asia, likely to field Asian players over the years due to the AFC 3+1 rule and a sizable section of the Australian community of Asian descent which we can't afford to alienate because we need every supporter we can get it's probably a good idea to be a bit careful with what we say.
But like you said - 2 pages - it's probably gotten a bit over blown. :)

Doesn't the word shit mullet man refer to someone from the drive bys

We can be way to sensitive; we don't lecture the Chinese when they call us Gweilo, which is a racist and derogatory term. Nor do we complain when the Japanese refer to us as Gaijin, which can mean alien.
I have never been upset when called a Pommie Bastard so why should people be upset when a casual epithet is thrown their way?
I am more inclined to throw a few barbs at the Malaysian referee who definitely deserves some curry...
