LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Dan Peek, a co-founder and musician for the folk rock band America, famous for the No. 1 hit "A Horse with No Name," has died. He was 60.

Peek, who died on Sunday, founded the band in the late 1960s with bandmates Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell while they attended high school together in London, where their fathers were stationed with the United States Air Force.

America's self-titled debut album, which featured "A Horse with No Name," shot to the top of the charts in 1972. The group won a Grammy for best new artist that year, and enjoyed a string of other popular hits including "Ventura Highway" and "Lonely People."

"We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined," wrote America co-founder and bandmate Dewey Bunnell on the band's website. "This news brings me great sadness. My sincere condolences go out to his wife, Catherine, and the entire Peek family. May Dan rest in peace, and his memory be cherished forever."

Neil Portnow, chief executive of The Recording Academy which gives out music's highest awards, the Grammys, called Peek "a dynamic individual and great talent."

He noted that Peek was a multi-talented musician who played guitar, bass, keyboards and harmonica.

Peek left America in 1977 and went on to perform contemporary Christian music, but never found the sort of fame he enjoyed with the popular band that recorded hit singles.

Beckley, who called Peek "a dear friend for many years," said the man "and his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all."

That was great .... boy are the BB looking old...

An in keeping with things a little different ...

As an aside in case you did not know ... Dylan today and has been for a few years now a Christian ... and given at his age and his standing he has the right to sing what he like .... and he has never been known for a great voice ... but he is the artist that has meant more to me than any other...

So Style and in keeping with your mixing things up a bit ... he is Dylan singing ...The Little Drummer Boy

I`m glad you liked the BB/SQ & hope you had it at full blast... :eek:verhead:

Dylan to me is proof that anyone can sing, you just have to put your heart into it & express your feelings.

If any artist means more to me than any other it would have to Roger Daltrey & THE WHO..

Roger was my dad`s apprentice way back & dad used to help him build the guitars that Pete Townshend would smash!!!
WE met up with him at Hope Winery & again at Acer arena 4 days later.
Of all their amazing catalog of songs this one means the most to me...

THe most famous line in this song "My name is Bill & I`m a headcase" was written about dad.

Enjoyed that and its a shame that talented folk these days seem to get caught up in the computer technical side of things .. rather than just punch it out...
The Animals were another group that took from the Delta Blues genre ... Justin Heywood from the Moody Blues ( a group I liked a lot) and his type just don't seem to get a look in these days... and many of todays acts are very good I loved "Power Finger" (sadly retired)... "Wolf Mother" and "the Cat Empire" "Xavier Rudd" also excellent if you ever get the chance to see them ..

You must come to Bluesfest at Byron its on at Easter each year ... check out last years line up ... http://www.bluesfest.com.au/

The 2nd ever concert I went to was at the Hordern Pavillion in 1975 maybe 1976.The lineup was Ol` 55, AC/DC & Skyhooks. How could I not get hooked on rock.

Midfielder,

My appreciation of the blues is very limited.
However,I really enjoy music played well, so I`m very open to listening to the clips you put up.

My tastes span from genre to genre(hate that word)
I can go from Mantovani to AC/DC,Sarah Brightman to Janis Joplin, but like most people, the songs from our youth are my favourites.
I`m a big fan of Aussie music from J`Ok & Thorpey through the 70`s to my favourite band at the moment JET.
As for my supergroup:-
Drums – Zac Starkey (Oasis, The Who)
Guitars – Pete Townshend (The Who)
Eric Clapton
Angus Young (AC/DC)
Bass Guitar- John Entwistle (The Who)
Sax- Clarence Clemons (E street Band)
Trumpet- James Morrison
Trombone –James Pankow (Chicago)
Keyboards- Jon Lord (Deep Purple)
Harmonica –Roger Daltrey (The Who)
Singers – Billy Thorpe (the Aztecs)
Freddy Mercury (Queen)
Johnny O`keefe

Guest Guitarist- Hank. B. Marvin

Not sure what they`d play but I`m sure it would be sweet...

Here`s another for you ..crank it up!!!!

My four great life Vice's... family, football, music...surfing ... can see myself just on or after dusk dusk as the sun is going down and the water is turning to a dark greeny blue colour and most have left and a large swell is rolling in ...AAAAAAAAGGGGrrrr

This song takes in two ... surfing and music .. just love thisand its because of how slow rather than how fast its played ... hard to leave Peter Green out of any top band IMO ... taken from the guy that posted the youtube were he described the song... for the music folk out there...

Albatross" is a guitar-based instrumental by Fleetwood Mac, released as a single in 1969, later featuring on the compilation albums The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK) and English Rose (USA). The piece was composed by Peter Green.

The composition suggests a relaxing sea setting, with cymbals imitating the sound of waves and a dreamy solo from Green's guitar. It contains only two chords, Emaj7 and F#m, and could be seen as an early ambient work. It is often assumed that Green used his Les Paul but he said it was his Fender Stratocaster, as there is subtle use of the vibrato bar. The Les Paul that Green used in Fleetwood Mac has a nasal tone like that achieved in the in-between positions of a Stratocaster, and heard in the song.

Still love the formative rock bands of the late 60's and 70's. For me one of the best and most influential bands of all time has to be Led Zeppelin. I was fortunate enough to see Mr Page and Mr Plant play live when the toured some years back with Unleaded. Still to this day the best concert I have ever seen. Jimmy Page has a way of playing that makes it look all so easy. And Plants voice is something to behold, absolutely blew me away.

The below clip is not one that most people would choose. I like it for the simpleness of it. Nothing fancy just a joyous song and a pretty cool guitar solo from Jimmy.
