Former Central Coast assistant coach Tony Walmsley is poised to return to the Mariners in a new recruitment role.

Walmsley, who previously assisted Graham Arnold at the club and coached the Mariners’ National Youth League team, will rejoin the A-League outfit in the coming weeks, FourFourTwo understands.

English-born Walmsley ran the Mariners NYL side for three seasons, winning the competition in 2012 and leading them to three top two finishes.

The coach helped bring through talents such as Bernie Ibini, Mat Ryan and Mustafa Amini and also founded the Mariners’ Academy.

He left the Mariners in 2012 to become Sheffield Unite’s head of Academy Recruitment in the UK.

It is believed Walmsley is joining the Mariners as head of recruitment, helping scout and sign new players.

Walmsley was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

He has been involved in Australian football for over 20 years, holding development roles with Football Federation Tasmania, Football NSW, Football Queensland and ran Manchester United’s Oceania Academy partnership with Parramatta Eagles..

Nice to have him back; I would have thought Moss was head of recruitment. Is this appointment part of the broader scouting network which was installed a few months ago?

Mixed reports to me at the time on his previous time here ... his record as set out above is perhaps not all his own work?

Has to be a positive move for the club, if Walmsley can source the best talent in Australia or great players internationally it would be a huge for the future. Kevrenor who else was responsible for bringing the historical talent through the club if not Walmsley?

Of course it's not all his own work but all you need to do is look at the time with him & without to see that he has value to add.
He would also have quite a large list of connections that I'd rather at the mariners than another team.

John Crawley with his contacts at Blacktown City has also added a lot.

John Crawley has widespread connections not just at Blacktown.
The most experienced & successful talent scout in Sydney though would have to be Ken Schembri. He had players at Blacktown from all over Sydney.

I am not going to quote those who commented to me, or name them.

Through my own media observations at Spirit FC and Mariners NYL that he did not seem to have a hands on coaching role, and to some degree at least it was the coaches, such as John McLafferty, who got the results. He may of course have done great work behind the scenes but I cannot comment on that.

Interesting but sometimes a coaches most important decision is his assistants and can be the difference between genius and fired

Get Mossy out...give Warmsley until the end of the year....and see how much improvement he can bring.
