Tony Walmsley's Yellow Army!

Happy bunch: The Mariners started their season with a win over Perth Glory. Photo: Getty Images

Many years have passed since the Central Coast Mariners last had a marquee player but new coach Tony Walmsley doesn't feel he's missing out by not having a star player outside the salary cap.

The Mariners got their season away to a perfect start at home on Saturday, toppling Perth Glory 3-2 in a match that, while light on defensive excellence, was arguably round one's most entertaining.

Widely tipped to finish in the bottom four – by virtue of their threadbare budget more than anything else – Walmsley's side showed enough to give the manager belief they can thrive without a household name.

"People ask me all the time about marquee players, the Mariners can't afford marquee players and whether we would go for one or not, I'm not sure," he said.

"I don't know if we would fill the stadium here with a marquee player, what we're trying to do is fill the stadium in a more organic way delivering those type of performances."

"For me, a marquee player would have to do really well to outdo Fabio [Ferreira], [Anthony] Caceres and [Mitch] Austin because they were terrific going forward."

Walmsley said he was realistic with his expectations but said what he'd witnessed since being handed the reins was a squad with more depth than people realised.

"The only people who really know what our capabilities are, are the people in the building. They're at training every day, they're close to the players and understand what their assets are," he said.

"I think it's fair to assume that when you're operating at the floor of the salary cap against teams that are spending more money that at times we're going to be challenged but that's the thing that we relish.

"It won't stop us, home and away trying to play in that way because it excites me, I think it's the best way that players can put themselves in the shop window."

While Roy O'Donovan is hardly on marquee wages, the Irish forward arrives in Gosford with a resume that features a stint in the English Premier League with Sunderland, two spells in the English Championship and another in the English Premier League.

The 30-year old made an instant impression, scoring an early goal – even if it was a totally fortuitous rebound. He otherwise impressed with his work rate and physicality.

"Roy O'Donovan has power through the middle and he's a handful," Walmsley said. "Roy never stops, he's one of those strikers that's Johnny on the spot and will put the ball into the back of the net when the service is good."

The Mariners will face the other impressive winner of round one, Brisbane Roar, at Suncorp Stadium next Sunday.

I enjoyed the water views last year because the footy was too boring to watch. This year however, I don't think the view will even register. :)

Brilliant. That is genuinely the best idea and fit for a club song I've heard since day dot. And I've thought about it a shit load. One thought:

Sunsets on the lake
Leaguesy by the gate

(Not a big fan of having "Brissy" in their)

Lots of potential in the lead in section too...

We've been around the HAL a couple of times or maybe more.
We've seen the sights, and won 3 points on every foreign shore.
And though nobody rates us, and NewCastle clearly hates us,
We tell them right away...

This is our HOME amongst the Palm-Tree's...

Shit practically writes itself. This should happen. Kudos Rowdy.
This is an absurdly good idea.

For reference:
Home among the gum trees

I've been around the world
A couple of times or maybe more
I've seen the sights, I've had delights
On every foreign shore
But when my mates all ask me
The place that I adore
I tell them right away

Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, a k-kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair.

You can see me in the kitchen
Cooking up a roast
Or Vegemite on toast
Just you and me, a cup of tea
And later on, we'll settle down
And go out on the porch
And watch the possums play

Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, a k-kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair.

There's a Safeways up the corner
And a Woolies down the street
And a brand new place they've opened up
Where they regulate the heat
But I'd trade them all tomorrow
For a little bush retreat
Where the kookaburras call

Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, a k-kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair.

Some people like their houses
With fences all around
Others live in mansions
And some beneath the ground
But me I like the bush you know
With rabbits running round
And a pumpkin vine out the back

Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, a k-kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair.

Give me a home among the gum trees

Some good ideas.

Sunsets on the lake

Its definitely NOT a lake.

We shouldnt be afraid to call it what it is,
Brisbane Waters.

Lawrie's campaign to change the name to 'Mariners Cove' was rightly poo-poo'd by locals. Our Football team shouldn't have the right to hijack a local geographical bastion. How could we live with 'The Cove' outside our ground, I say with an embarrassed sky-blue face .

Its been called Brisbane Waters since it was named in 1825, so that's nearing 200 years!

Some tinkering,

We've been around the HAL a couple of times or maybe more.
We've won the SEAT!, and DID COMPETE On many an ASIAN SHORE .
And although nobody rates us,
DONT CARE NewCastle hates us,
We tell them right away...

This is our HOME amongst the Palm-Tree's
With lot's of Coast' - ies
With A goal - or - two, from the yellow & blue"

A Waterview's out the front.
With A Leaguesy out the back
And the Mightyyyy Marinnn - nerrrrrrrs!

This is our HOME amongst the Palm-Tree's...

Like the use of the Bay16 chant
"NO ONE RATES US
BUT WE DONT CARE" , being morphed in ;).

But like to keep the 'out the front & out the back' concept from the original lyrics of whats actually at our ground.

Its a song I've been tinkering with in my head for years. Kids learn it in primary school and John Williamson's songs, & this one in particular, is quintessential and resonates with older Australians.

I dont know if its good enough for being used as the club song?
:piano:
But I'm chuffed with your suggestion. :)

Perhaps just the initial verse and the constant repeat of the chorus. As it would be easier for people to remember AND SING, which is what you want the most.

Cheers.;)

In my very humble opinion the best chat or idea for a chat I have heard ... part of its appeal is from Kids to Grandparents the tune is known and by and large loved.

I also agree in keeping it just a couple of versus...

Very minor change at the start of the second verse remove the opening word ""Got"" and "With a"

This is our HOME amongst the Palm-Tree's

Waterview's out the front.
Leaguesy out the back

Sauce bottles or cannon at the front
Bay 16 at the back

Or water views out the front
Bowlo out the back

I'm with Middy and GRA. Shaun are you reading?

Like the water views better. Nice! Though I also think Big AL's nod to the giant sauce bottles is pretty tempting!

Yeah you're right about the - out the back and front - too iconic not too really isn't it.

Still kinda like the idea of an extra verse though, that maybe immortalised the sauce bottles, the band and bay 16 would be pretty awesome. More time to build, catch on with two chorus's could be a bonus. But you could always add on if this ever got up.

I (and my family) have wanted a walk on song from day 1. Lots of discussions on here and elsewhere... many said needs to be organic. But for me, musing on the fan forum is about as organic as you can hope for. And most importantly it just ticks so many boxes. It's a great song. An Australian classic indeed. We know it's catchy as all hell. Virtually everyone knows the tune. John Williamson himself is a really good fit. Associates strongly with words like honest, humble, underdog, grass roots, spirited, mateship, no bullshit... fits our brand like a glove I reckon.

As said, think it's a really good idea, and I think thats shows even in the support it's gotten right away on a forum famous for disagreements. So love to see this get some wind behind it sails. (For our purposes, shits on sailing imho) :piano:

Playing with the first again... (struggling with 'did compete' line... but love - winning the seat - and fleshing out the no one rates us...)

We've been around the HAL a couple of times or maybe more.
We've won the SEAT!, and gotten beat (o_O) on many an ASIAN SHORE.
And although nobody rates us,
And don't care NewCastle hates us,
We tell them right away...

Also think Middy is right about losing the 'got'
