Tony Walmsley's Yellow Army!

Like this idea. Especially for young players. In fact I like everything Walmsley has had to say so far after both wins and even the horror loss. Fingers cross get to feel the same way about his recruitment.

"to try to make them think a bit more about their game and why they do things."

This is going to sound silly but I thought that was the coaches job.....

Seems like a good idea though.

Managing in any context is easier when the managees can see what the manager is trying to achieve and feel they have a stake in the success.

That it apparently failed with the scum tells us not much at all - there are a bucketload of issues at the scum and a good idea or two aren't enough in themselves to overcome the broader context of institutionalised disruption, disharmony and failure.

@dibo, amongst all those words ... we get the picture ... they're even more cactus than us. :piralaugh: Ahhh yes, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, can't we ? :)

He had me at 'new brand of football'

Our playing style under Moss was so depressing I was expecting the players to start dying their hair black and adopt some My Chemical Romance song as their anthem....

Cup the barometer for new era Mariners

The Central Coast Mariners have an opportunity to exorcise last season’s A-League demons with a win in the FFA Cup Round of 32 clash against the Wellington Phoenix tonight.

The Mariners are on a mission to dismiss the poor spirit that circulated around Gosford last season.

Club legend John Hutchinson - a huge influence on the field for 10 seasons – starts his post-football career as part of the coaching staff. The $10m Centre of Excellence at Tuggerah is taking shape, the launch of a new playing strip has been a cause célèbre and new recruits are arriving on and off the field.

For the A-League perennial overachievers hopes are high of living up to that tag once again.

Looking towards tomorrow night’s Cup clash, head coach Tony Walmsley, believes the tie will be a barometer of where the club’s preparations are at.

“We’d love to go on a run in the FFA Cup, it’s a cup game, so you never know what’s going to happen,” Walmsley said.

“It’s an early challenge for us, just purely based on the fact that we’ll be 10 weeks into pre-season.

“We’ll be ready to give it a real crack and the team will be picked based on the loads that have gone into them in pre-season and their physical condition.

“We know a lot about Wellington. They are travelling to Gosford, they are going to play a night game at Central Coast stadium – it’s not an easy task for them.

“We are hopeful we can put in a good shift.”

For the upcoming season Walmsley is hoping to bring some joy back to the Mariners faithful by electrifying Central Coast Stadium once again

“The intent is to turn things around, we are very confident that we will entertain people,” he said.

“We’ve set our stall out to do that, on the back of that obviously we are going to play to win. But we want to do it in a way that excites the home fans. And also really take on teams away from home.”

“We’ve added some quality: goalkeeper Paul Izzo, Roy ODonovan, Mitch Austin and Harry Ascroft. We are already better than we were.

“We’re adapting a new playing style, which will give us more energy for longer, for sustained periods, in A-League games.

“The positive results and the way the team played at the back end of last season is a baseline for us. We asked questions of the players last year that physically they weren’t able to answer.

“But that’s purely preparation so the whole pre-season is geared towards maximising that side of it, so they are capable of delivering a much more proactive and forceful playing style.

Walmsley who won the A-League National Youth League in the 2011–12 season has full confidence that his side will be in the top six, and is looking to his young charges to take them there.

“In terms of goals, I’m sitting here now and we are a finals team. It won’t sit comfortably with me if we don’t achieve that,” he said.

“When you look at Anthony Kalec, Liam Rose, Nick Fitzgerald and Anthony Caceras, they are all players that can turn a game.

Anthony Caceras had a breakthrough season last year and he’ll take it to another level. Nick Fitzgerald played every game last year, and he’ll take it to another level. The end product for Fitzy is what we are going to be working with him on, it’s there it’s just about to breakthrough.

“Mitch Austin gives us power and pace down the left. There’s a great energy and youthfulness behind the squad. With players like Jacob Poscaliero who has a pre-season now, Jake McGing and new signing Josh Bingham.

“If we can get these guys through pre-season with no major breakdowns, we have got a great balance and a lot of energy and power that we perhaps weren’t able to tap into at the back end of last season.”

Walmsley will be looking to Mariners club legend John Hutchinson to instil the passion and the purpose he showed on the field into his new role as assistance coach. But the biggest problem for his new number two will be calming down the enthusiasm so he doesn’t run out of fuel too early.

“John Hutchinson has made a very quick transition from being a player to a coach, in that he’s shown the ability to do draw the line and be able to go, ‘I’m no longer a player I’m now a coach,’ and he has had no fear in putting himself out there,” the 49-year-old said.

“The only challenge I have with Hutch is not allowing him to burn out, he’s got so much energy. He doesn’t sleep, he’s at training at 7am in the morning setting things up and planning, like he always did when he was a player. Doing more than he needs to.

“So it’s about reining him and capturing that energy and putting it in the right direction.”

Very good player Middy but not a household name to the average punter.
Would put bums on seats because he would help us win a lot of games.

Hyundai A-League season preview: Central Coast

There’s a different feel around the Mariners. Tony Walmsley’s men are set to play a more entertaining, expansive brand of football as the club recalibrates its image: ‘Yes, we’re still battlers, but we’re also entertainers’ is the feeling on the Coast. Can this usher in a new era of success?
The Mariners didn’t have much success with their imports last season, with Richard Vernes, Malick Mane and Kim Seung-yong struggling to produce the goods.
With the exception of Roy O’Donovan, the club has recruited mostly Australian players and Walmsley will be hoping this home-grown approach and a talented crop of youngsters will pay dividends this season and long-term.
Walmsley has had a full-preseason at the helm to put his stamp on the squad. They’ve been running sand hills and doing double sessions in chilly Canberra. So they should be fit enough and will no doubt have bonded well as a group.
But will it reap success? This proud club will see Season 11 of the Hyundai A-League as one of opportunity as rebuilding towards the competition summit begins.

THE BURNING QUESTIONS
  • Can they turn Gosford into a fortress again?
  • Where will the goals come from?
  • Will Fabio Ferreira have the X-factor again this season?
  • Will Nick Fitzgerald carry on his excellent form?
LESSONS LEARNT FROM LAST SEASON
  • Have more faith in home-based heroes
  • Tactical approach needs to evolve

ROAD AHEAD
The Mariners kick-off their season at home to Perth, the first of three big home games over the first five rounds including a blockbuster against Sydney FC in round 4.
It’s going to be a cracking festive period for the Mariners, which includes a bumper Boxing Day clash against the Sky Blues in Sydney, while the club has won back their coveted New Year’s Eve fixture in Gosford, taking on Wellington Phoenix to bring down the curtain on 2015.
A huge last month of the season sees them play Sydney FC, the Wanderers, Victory and the Jets means it’s a daunting finish in the run-up to the finals.
EXPECTED STRENGTHS
  • An experienced spine: Liam Reddy in goals, Eddy Bosnar at centre-back, Nick Montgomery in midfield and striker Roy O’Donovan are leaders.
  • Lowered expectations: That’s just the way the club likes it.
POTENTIAL WEAKNESS
  • Home woes: usually so hard to beat on their home turf, the Mariners only won five of their 13 home matches last season, losing six. If that doesn’t improve, either will their ladder position.
  • Lack of genuine goal-scorer: From 27 games last season, the Mariners scored just 26 goals, the second worst attack in the Hyundai A-League. O’Donovan’s signing may help but more will be needed from Fabio Ferreira, Nick Fitzgerald and Mitch Austin.
TACTICAL APPROACH
Walmsley is likely to adapt a 4-3-3 formation, which looks to best serve the players at his disposal. O’Donovan should lead the line, flanked by the likes of Fabio Ferreria, Mitch Austin and the rising star Nick Fitzgerald.
Skipper Nick Montgomery will anchor the midfield, with youth likely to be deployed around him. Anthony Caceres will hope to go to another level this season, while big things are expected from youngster Liam Rose.
The defence appears pretty settled with Storm Roux, Eddy Bosnar, Josh Rose, Jacob Poscoliero and new recruit Harry Ashcroft all solid options.
The Mariners are likely to set-up with a solid defensive base, pressing when they can and then look to hit on the transition using the pace of Ferreira and Austin in wide areas.
BREAKOUT STAR(S)
  • Daniel Heffernan: He might be 28 but Heffernan is getting his first crack in the A-League after starring for PS4 NPL Victoria club Heidelberg United. A powerfully-built attacker, Heffernan could be a real handful for opposition defences.
  • Michael Neill: Looked to be emerging as a real prospect for the club last season until injury curtailed the youngster, restricting him to just eight appearances. But with a full off-season under his belt, this could be Neill’s year.
FINAL WORD
The club probably hasn’t been able to strengthen their squad as well as some of their rivals meaning it could be another tough grind in Gosford. Tony Walmsley will have his side well structured, disciplined and with a solid game-plan, but do the Mariners have the quality to push for the play-offs in a league that's growing in quality each year? With no FFA Cup or ACL, there's no excuse though. You sense though the fans will be happy seeing a better brand of football - anything beyond that will be a bonus.

Who wrote that shite???

I can't really remember Fitzy ever being in top form?

On last seasons form Bosnar is not a leader but if he can keep his head together and realise he is lucky to get the chance at CCM and only the Jets (maybe) being interested in him if he underachieves again and we dump him...maybe he can focus and show his true ability.

O'Dono and Heff are obviously top goal scorers and this year we have some grunt coming through from the midfield that won't be hamstrung by a scared to attack coach. So rather than be isolated, they will get plenty of opportunities to convert.

TW is not a mug and if he doesn't go over the top in a Kevin Keegan style all out attack.....we will win more than lose.

I expect a top 6 finish.

More likely he wasn't shown the money he wanted, and then accepted a lesser deal at Sydney when it was clear *nobody* was going to show him the money he wanted.

Just guessing, mind.

. i tend to agree

. as a whole last season's squad was overpaid for their under-performance (TW's take on things). anybody coming off contract was going to find themselves in an awkward position particularly if they were on a decent salary

. when matty's cutting was announced i thought it gave him as good a chance as any to find somebody willing to meet his pay demands ... but i was pretty comfortable that he would be re-signed leading into the season ... when:
  • we hadn't found a better alternative for less money
  • he hadn't found a new home for more than we were willing to pay
. things didn't quite turn out that way but we will now have to see:
  • will matty be better off in sydney
  • will we be better off with the new-old heff
