Clarence's view of the game:
#6 David D'Apuzzo
Needs more development. Coaught out quite a few times. Griffiths J. & Thompson, and later Hoffman, found him out and made his game a misery. Lost a fair bit of confidence as the game went on. Will learn greatly from this game. Good understudy to Heff, but this game needed Heff.
#4 Pedj Bojic
Great first A-League game. Saved out bacon many times. He is going to put pressure on the other backs for a spot. Bit slow off the mark at times, and a spot out at RB may be found to be too slow, but his defence is solid. Helped out D'Apuzzo a fair bit too so definitely a good team player.
#5 Bradley Porter.
Definitely stepped up in the absence of Mile. Partnered the centre mid roles with Hutch well. Passing in the first half was very good. Came more forward than Mile would, and that gave extra man in counter attack, but also left our defence line exposed.
#7 John Hutchinson
Quiet game to the layman spectator, but when you consider he got a lot of assistance from both Osman and Porter in the centre mid area, then you consider that he played a more distributor role.
#17 Matthew Osman.
Good to see him play a full game. Worked a more midfield oriented role, coming out wide on occasions. He took on Song in the midfield at times, Osman's technical ability meant he was better adept at tracking Song, and showed the other mids how it's done. Will benefit greatly from the run, and hopefully Osman can play a fair share of games this season without the ogre of injury hanging over him. He is vital to the squad due to his utility value, and technical ability.
#15 Andrew Clark
Playing RB he had to contend with Song, and his experience gave him the common sense to track the guy and try and hold him out onto the sideline as much as possible. Kept trying to master Song, and kept at him. Also linked up well with Ahmad Elrich in the first half, and surprisingly, made more than usual runs up the right wing. He was better at offloading onto Elrich than the long pass into the box.
#18 Alex Wilkinson
Played an average game. Not good not bad either, overall. Helped out D'Apuzzo a lot on the 2nd half, when it was obvious that Grifiths J. was getting the better of D'Apuzzo. Also good credit for trying to knock out said Griffiths with a head butt (accidental). Both went down for a standing (sitting) 8 count, and I think Alex won't try that tactic again! Marking in the middle was rough and he did stand his ground.
#10 Adrian Caceres
First half was good, second half not so. Showed classy moves and obviously has potential to win a game or two for the Mariners. There was talk of his own dislike of not getting full games when playing for Melbourne, and his form in the second half did not do his wish to play full games any good. He faded quite lot in the second half. Kept out of the way, and when given the ball did look tired. Replaced by Mrdja @ 88 mins. He will learn to play 90, even if it takes Clarky to damn near kill him! Persevere for now and see if his second half involvement increases over the coming games. Switched from left to right wing for most of second half. Can be found uncomfortable if forced onto right side of his body and forced to play right footed.
#21 Ahmad Elrich
More involved throughout the whole game than I was expecting. More of a team player than I expected. Made some good passing moves involving Porter, Osman and Clark. Will be winning us matches with better control up the wing, and his crosses are not too bad either. He even switched to left wing and when playing that position came back to help D'Apuzzo in defence, you can't ask more of him than that!
#22 Sasho Petrovski
Not the man for the role that he ended up filling. Would have prefered Mrdja to start, but understand Lawrie's logic in putting a fit striker on first. With both Caceres and Elrich staying wide, and Osman having to lend a hand in centre mid with Porter and Hutchinson, Sasho was left on his own at times, and he struggled to be effective. Will have better games, particularly when he has a genuine striker/forward partnering him up front. Replaced by Matt Simon at 66 mins.
#20 Danny Vukovic.
Usual good game as goalie. Couldn't see the penalty, so can't comment if he did a good job trying to save or was fooled by Griffiths J. Some of his in play kicks were horrid but I blame the uneven surface of the pitch as much as Danny's technique.
#19 Matt Simon.
GOAL #1 for the Mariners and a very happy lad! On for only 20 odd minutes. Headed in a goal so job done. Ran around a bit like an epileptic giraffe, but seemed to give a tiring New castle defence a lot to think about. Monkey now off his back, and can only improve.
#9 Nik Mrdja
Came on for Caceres in the dying moment of the game. Keeps training well he'll get a run. I think he may enjoy this season. Has ample support/competition from Simon, Petrovski and Macallister, so there will be games that Lawrie will have strategies that may or may not involve Nik - and that will help Mrdja survive the season better.
Of the Newcastle team I observed that Griffiths J. looks like he ate too much sushi over in Japan (fark he looked like he ate a whole Minke Whale - for scientific purposes, of course), Holland went missing a fair bit of the game and looked fatigued. Thompson gave David D'Apuzzo a football lesson in parts, Song was a constant menace. Not convinced about Zura - time will tell if he's up to the claims made.
Overall the game was a battle in the midfield more than anything else. Neither side gained control in the midfield. Noticed that both sides never let up on the player with the ball, and there was a lot of pressure applied to the player with the ball the minute he had the ball rather than letting the player move and decide what to do.
Feel, also, that something had been said to both teams in regards to stopping play and arguing with the ref, as the game moved along nicely. Not good for a player or two who ended up cramping, but the spectators around me (family types) really got into the flowing game, irrespective of whether their team had the ball or not.
