Scum- Round 2 Match Thread

Disagree with most posts here, I loved the game; first half Mariners showed more energy and invention than the whole AFC campaign. Their mojo is definitely back. Simon was offside by the thickness of a fingernail, lino makes the decision live not on Fox replay. Thought Vukovic was outstanding, really commanding in the air, taking the ball well under pressure. We played a lot of good football in  the first half but credit to Branko for the tactical switch and to Lubo who totally took over the game in the second half. That guy has to be called up by Pim just to 'show' himself. He was pure class, easily the MoM. Result was fair. Can someone hire a finishing coach? Can someone please teach Matty Simon how to score in the air from more than a metre out? And can someone please tell McKinna that the subs bench isn't a first aid box in the back of the car to be used in emergencies but a tactical weapon to change the course of the game (cue Branko). If Elrich is a better player than Travis then send Travis home. But most of all, the team was positive and confident and I am looking forward to Sydney. :eek:verhead:

I usually get the screamin' shits with Hutcho's back passes but I liked what I saw in the first half last night. His back passes seemed to be that start of a patient and meaningful build up. I wont dwell on the fact that we should've been at least 3-nil up ay the half.

Cullina did well reorganizing the Scum during the break. The big difference was shilfting Ljubo into a defensive mid role. It was quite funny seeing him tower over weeMac at times. As much as it pains me to say, Lube dominated that 2nd half and stopped us in our tracks. The patient build ups we were constructing in the first 45mins were replicated by the Scum in the 2nd 45. It really was a game of two halves.

I was encouraged by our first half. We can only get better with Doig back on deck, although I thought Wilko did a great job marshaling the troops. I could hear him loud and clear in the stands, which wasn't hard due to the lack of atmosphere. Great games from weeMac, Matty, Vuko and Pedj. Hutch impressed as well, although a few too many wayward passes out to the wing for my liking. Mrdja??? I can't really say anything positive about that cameo. A couple of years ago, I was worried about selling him, now I can't wait to get rid of him.

I was also disappointed that Travis didn't get a run. Coupled with the timing and selection of the replacements last night. It's funny how fickle fans are in that not one word was mentioned last weekend about LM being punted, but al of a sudden the calls for his replacement are starting up again. Based on the 2nd half last night, I'm not surprised.

Were you watching the same game as the rest of us.

Boogs was playing central defence and was awsome. He cleared every threat from corners and their strikers were lucky to get a kick throughout the game

Definately never said this before, but i was genuinly bored last night! The standard and imagination from both teams was f**king depressing. Loved the kick off though, back pass to wilko, wilko hoof up field! I knew then that this was a sign of things to come. Although we didn't play the long ball really there was no creativity or spark that generated in interest in the game or the crowd for that matter.

I do wonder why Hutch or Bojic stayed on the field. Both I thought were quite poor and when were pushing for the lead late in the second half with players breaking both sides Hutch continually passed it backwards. It's all he seemed to do. When we aparently have a "box to Box" midfielder on the bench, why not give him a run.

Probably has something to do with his clearance that landed at songs feet for their goal.

But I agree apart from that he was solid

I dunno, Mrdja produces something every now and then.

QFT. NOT. He came on last night and did nothing except stuff up a well executed cross to him!

WTF Lawrie put Mrdja on when we needed someone to replace a tiring D-Mac I dunno. Mrdja has a reputation of being an 'in the box' striker not a runner of the ball, and that's being polite. And D-Mac's role last night was to run . Why LM didn't start with Elrich first and see how his legs went then brought on D-Mac... but I'd guess that would mean having both D-Mac and Mrdja on the bench which would be odd.

Deej, thanx for answering the question I had about Caceres a few pages back.

Unless Caceres was under criminal investigation, had some irregularity with a drug test, or seriously assaulted one of the staff or team mates at training, you'd have to consider Lawrie's non selection of him a bit petty. I mean, he is a player who can come on in a cameo role, change the complexion of the game to that point and produce some flair.

With McGlinchey tiring, D-Mac buggered, even Kwasnik looking out on his feet, and Porter struggling with the role of RB, we were withering in the second half.

If Lawrie had included Caceres in his bench lineup,  he could have put Caceres on. He could have taken some of the load off McGlinchey, added some unpredictable spark, pulled the Newcastle defense out of shape a bit, and opened up opportunities.

In fact, I'd argue that the match was screaming for someone like Caceres to come on after the Jets scored, to fire up the Mariners and draw and then go on to win.

Re: the bay move by the Marinators.
We were on the western side, and could easily hear both supporters bays.
Sorry guys, but the Squadron were better organised, and had much more going about them. Quite a lot of mumblings from a packed Bay 23 which is a good sign, so maybe once you've settled into the new bay, things will improve.

Its funny what people see or choose to see. I have never been a fan of Hutch's, I've always thought he is a bit negative a can stifle our attack, but I thought he was close to best on ground last night and wasn't too shabby against The Victory. A lot of our wide play was started by him and he only back passed when under pressure mainly in the 2nd half. I'm only in my second year of playing football (at 40) and have only been watching for a few years but there is nothing worse as a defender if your midfield continually turn the ball over and don't track back to help out. I assume its the same at all levels. If he can do one thing well it is keeping possession and its probably not a bad trait for a DM.

For a totally new bay, I thought 23 worked less worse than could be expected.

Very poorly policed for a derby game, an epic fail by BT security/police (to add to their long list)- overkill for the scum, nothing for us..........der.

2 groups of singers - nope, too small a group, sometimes 3 songs at once and singers, drummers need to be in 1 group IMHO.

As for the tools who stood behind row p and thought it funny to sing over any chant (with just shit) and throw beers at us and the poor buggers in the mute seats, your chances of going through the season without a smack are pretty slim. One of you nearly copped it last night (not from me) and you deserved it.

All in all, a positive move imho. A bit of a culture shock for the next bay I think and security got a few whines. Felt a bit like an away game which is always good.

We were in bay 22  ... couldn't see past the marinators for any action happening down the water end. Moved to bay 20/21 after awhile. was a better option.

+1 - My heart sank when he did that. However we did keep possession well in the first half. We had a lot of chances but also let-offs. The defending at Newcastle's free kick towards the end of the 1st half was back to the old comedy routine - two Jets players unmarked on the back post and they should've punished us.
Mrdja's in a very difficult position - he's been out injured so long, and he gets 15-20 mins play. He doesn't offer any width, which we needed more of last night, and Simon is wasted on R wing. Surely it would be better to start Elrich out there, bring Mrdja on at the hour to play alongside Simon in a 4-4-2?

i think some of the players let the hype of a derby get the better of them, we definatly had the 1st half but by not scoring invited newcastle to attack and they reshuffled and did with fair effect.

as for supporters group: its simple why the squadron are better than us. they all join in. also need to be further down the front watching replay looked terrible having half under the roof hiden.

good game not as good as a win but better than a lose. As for the marinators move thumbs up i sat in bay 17 and it sounded ok but the squadron out sang you guys easy. They are better organized they have a couple of leaders that start the songs and everyone follows. We have everybody starting different song and no one following. When they scored the squadron was rocking hate to say it did look good but saying that i hope we can get there one day because we are better than them at everything else. One chant was missing at the end of the game and i was disappointed WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE [for now anyway]
