EXCLUSIVE: Central Coast Mariners boss Graham Arnold has released promising youth league player Panny Nikas as the Socceroo assistant coach continues to reshape the clubs roster.

Nikas broke through from the youth league team to the first team late last season under then coach Lawrie McKinna.

The lively midfielder debuted for the navy and blue on New Year's Eve against Wellington Phoenix.

But the 21-year-old midfielder is now too old for the NYL side and cannot be guaranteed a regular spot in the Central Coast first team next season.

It's understood the former Sutherland Sharks player holds no hard feelings towards the club and is currently on a break before deciding his next move.

Wha?
He could of least given him a chance, Panni isn't A-league quality yet, but it wouldn't take a good coach to get him in the right direction, fark!

As I said in another thread.

Essentially Panni was competing against Griffiths for the one spot. While Panni has potential he is only 4 months younger than Griffiths. Picking someone that has played 24 HAL games over someone with 1 is not really a stange call.

So Pat a defensive midfielder for an attacking midfielder, which one do you think we need more of?

Panni is a deep midfielder that sometimes go forwards. He is not a CAM. His speed of thought is too slow for that position and he takes too many touches. I would have liked to keep him in the squad (not first XI).

However, with 19 spots gone I think we need to aim higher for the remaining spots - especially as you say we need more attacking midfielders - both central and wingers.

I am looking for the fabled Argie #10 and a couple of skillful and speedy wingers - probably all visa players.

Nikas is a defensive midfielder. I agree that Griffiths is the far better option of the two, simply due to experience. Griffiths is also more versatile, being able to play in the heart of defence as well.

No problems from me with this decision; Nikas did look a class above at Youth level but his performances in the first team were a little less impressive. Right decision from Arnie here, though I do hope Nikas gets the break he is after somewhere.

to be fair he was also judged through a host of training sessions and trial games

as i said, we do not know that panni wasn't demanding big wages

Fair point, would only ever have been a cheap filler and maybe reckons he can do better.

the signings in the works will more than make up for his absence

TBH i dont think his absence needs making up for. Griffiths>>>>>Nikas. Its Boogs absence that needs making up for

Griffiths actually covers both. He can and does play CB. Wilko can go to RB if needed.

1) Any idea when these 'signings in the works' might be announced?
2) If they do come about - should we at least see how the team goes before calling for GA's demise?

If signings are coming from OS I certainly wouldn't be expecting them to be announced before their seasons are finished or very close to.
