That.

Total work in progress side too - that side had a debutant covering Ferreira and missed McGing. On form this year, they're big holes to fill.

Next week won't be any easier, with McGing back but Ferreira still gone, to be joined by Austin and Montgomery.

But even still, there's more than enough in the style of play to see the direction we're heading.

The first 9 games aren't the ones to worry about.

Brisbane's 2010/11 side is one of the best there's ever been. But they took time to gel in a new system with a fairly new coach. A lot of experienced players were moved on.

After 6 games (Round 7 - there was a bye that year) they on just 9 points. Compared to us they had converted one loss to a draw and another to a win.

But the main thing is that anyone who heard about this coach coming in and punting experienced players and getting kids to play high-risk football and saw those results would've gone "well this is a bag of shit", especially after Victory pounded them 3-0. I remember watching that game - Victory were utterly ruthless on mistakes and Ange came out after and basically said that'll happen, but keep watching; this is gonna come good.

They kicked on and won the league by a million and were unlucky the Grand Final never happened that year because of floods or something. The difference is their squad was deeper and they didn't lose the close ones - they at least eked out draws.

We're not Brisbane, but we'll be better than half the league by the end of the year and I reckon we'll make finals. By Round 27 people might even talk about us as dark horses.

The people complaining aren't saying anything useful - "moneyball doesn't work, spend more on players" is probably the dumbest of the lot, because whether we're spending f**k all or shitloads, I'd want us to be moneyballing it to get maximum value for any $x spent, and "bring Liam Reddy back" is a close second.

In the absence of sensible contributions I'm happy to put my trust in the gaffer.

Outstanding post.

One tiny thing. Grand Final? What nonsense is this? I went to the St Patricks Day piss up in the Irish club on a Saturday night in Brisbane - nothing else happened.

I am concerned about how/when we will add some experienced quality to the side as Ange was able to do with Broich and Berisha. I suspect we dont have the money for that

. excuse the language but that was f**king hilarious

. although i admit i did have to start re-reading part way through before the penny dropped (perhaps i was finally starting to suppress those memories)

Yeah I've seen a bit of that. Is it wrong that I'd still prefer losing like we did last night to being higher in the ladder under Moss' playing style?
--snip--

After 7 rounds last season we were 1 win, 2 draws, 4 losses, 7th on the table. 4 goals for, 9 goals against, -5 GD.
From 7 rounds this season we are 1 win, 2 draws, 4 losses, 8th on the table. 9 goals for, 14 goals against, -5 GD.

Pretty similar stats considering Mossy's way was so "defensive".

The thread from that round 7 game makes for some interesting reading...

A few quotes...
first 20 or 30 min was decent...then.....total utter crap

we looked fantastic for about half an hour, then what the hell happened

Most lackluster disappointing Mariners performance for a long time if not ever

Why on earth did we sub our striker for a winger at the half? Was Duke injured?

Some crowd feedback on our playing style
We have nothing in attack, we didn't and haven't looked like scoring all season, something has to give. Watching and listening to people yell abuse at Bruce Stabler (CEO) standing in his corporate box about how shit we played is not a good sign.

How good was our defence then?
Mariners Looked like mens all age 10's as Elrich strolled past the numerous yellow witches hats for Adelaides second.

Seems to me like people (Facebook, commentators, journos) are banging on about our defence because we are banging on about wanting to play attacking football.
We served up some utter crap last year, with tactics supposedly based on defence first, and still conceded a lot of weak goals.

Thoughts? :shoutclap:

But, but we had Reddy and Bosnar.

According to the clubs FB page them not being there is solely responsible for where we are now.

although the records 7 games in a nearly identical, this season we do have improvement in us. Last season you knew it was dire shit and only ever going to get worse

Agree, it appears that by using the terms "attacking" and "entertaining" a lot, some people are convincing themselves that we don't/can't defend.. Shaky in the first few rounds, granted. Though barring injury to key personnel I have no major qualms with our defence. I think we can certainly use a bit of depth but I am completely happy with the direction of our playing style at the moment and am interested to see what we look like come the latter part of the season.

Because it's stupid.

Reddy's gone for non-football reasons, and we are doing what we can with an extremely limited budget.

We've been in every game we've played, we've scored in every game we've played, but the fans who want instant gratification and a trophy every other year will need to take a reality check.

Not disagreeing with the Departure of Reddy (although could've been handle better imo).

Been in every game we played?, can't agree there. 2-0 down after 18mins is not being in a game.

Not about wanting instant gratification, it's about wanting a team that actually shows improvement in it's results instead of just settling for mediocrity , and hoping a grand plan will come together.
If that makes me a fair-weather fan, well you can go and get f.... , having endured the dross in the last few seasons of the Northern Spirit debacle now getting similar here.
I guess I am better off supporting another team...

OK

From that point we were making chances and but for a mistimed run or mistimed pass here or there we could've got the 2-1 much earlier and when it did come it didn't feel undeserved.

You don't see improvement? We go from conceding 10 in 4 to 4 in 3 (including a game away against the reigning champions who put 4 past last year's runners-up playing away), we're still scoring in every game we play and you don't see an improvment?

Didn't write that, but by all means feel free to get upset about and make charming replies to things I don't write.

I quite enjoyed Lawrie's first season at Spirit.
The final season was when the groundwork was done that morphed into the Mariners.
But then maybe you preferred the "Arnie Out" year or even the Rangers debacle.

I have no problem with Walmsley as coach.
We are improving and it feels like just a few tweeks and maybe one or two good signings and we'll be a menace.
We are creating tons of chances, we just need to convert them.

Under Moss I wasn't sure where we were heading and what our play would look like when we got there.

End of the day it's fun watching the Mariners again.

Copping a couple of quick goals doesn't mean we weren't in it. The fact that we fought hard for 90 minutes means we were in it.
I feel like next week may be a fairer reflection of where we're at - we did well against the Jets and some appalling refereeing, definite improvement. Don't forget, people are calling MV the best team the league has ever seen. So all things considered, a win or even a draw. was highly optimistic at best.
