Rd 7 Gold Coast vs Mariners

Enjoyed the game:, I like watching quality defenders like Wilko and Swansthingy, impressed by Rose, a much better defender than Heff, Pedj did well too; Griffiths is no Jedinak, Perez faded, McGlinchey not up to it, Hutch predictable; if Simon and McBreen are the front line of defence then we aren't going to score are we? As for Ryan, impossible to tell if he is any good as our defence and GCU's lack of teeth meant he was untested. I would take 0-0 at GCU anyday. There was plenty of good football by both sideds except wher it matters!

who was it that took that penalty?
clearly not a good striker!
keep him off, time to do some more promotion from

We played crap but sick of reading the rubbish in the papers that we played defensively. We turned the ball over a lot especially in the 2nd half which meant we defended a lot but any side that plays 2 strikers and an attacking midfielder that has the defensive capabilities of a witch’s hat, has not been set up to sit back and defend. I think more at times we lacked GC’s intensity in the midfield which means they had easy possession and put us under pressure when we had the ball.

Anyway a few things for me to out of the game:

McGlinchy and Perez can’t start in the same side unless we add another midfielder as they are both too lightweight.

Simon needs time on the bench

I would give serious consideration to a 4-2-3-1 formation next game with Hutch and Griffiths as our DM’s and McBreen up front.

i think everybody is getting too swayed by the 90 mins of football each week. yes the two melbourne wins were good and the football was a mile better then the tripe dished out last year. and then a second half easily forgotten on sunday has got everbody ushering change and caution.

we have to remember this is a massively changed squad, we have a few players in unfamiliar roles where obviously GA see's as the best fit for the team in the long term. so seven weeks in we have to look at progression over the 630 mins of football. the answer i think is positive without being awesome, the football being played and the competitiveness of the team is still patchy but generally improving.

i dont want to crow at all about perez because he is one cog in the 23 man squad so wether he plays or not shouldnt effect our thoughts as a whole on the progress of the team.

We know our flaws or weaknesses and the boys are slowly but surely gaining momentum and confidence. less then a quarter of the way through the season am i happy.... very.

Changes in the squad will always happen so plenty of time for changes and chances for those on the fringes.

1 point is better then 0 points we got there last year!

i though we did ok .first perez got a decent gallop .mcbreen is a good buy, defenders win championships . we missed the combination with rose and boz .7 pionts in 3 games.
as the saying goes.you can only lose a GF in september not win one

Good sign is that we are very strong in defence....3 clean sheets in a row and even the goal against Sydney was an error so could easily have been 4 games. Perez will need 2 or 3 games at least to get match fit and will get better and better...there is alot of competition for places too. All in all a good start to the season, but would have liked another striker, apart from Mcbreen no one else in form up front.

Anyone get annoyed at thwaite 'reviving' Matty ...I
know matty wasn't injured but if he was and thwaite did that crap it could cause serious damage !

Glad to see Ryan keeping another clean sheet !

it was a fre kick not a penalty

. ok this is something that has always confounded me ... because although i think i know the definitions 'most' people interchange the two terms freely

. the problem i have is the logic part of my brain thinking that 'if someone has been penalised then a penalty has been awarded'

. if someone says 'spot kick' i know what they are talking about

unless of course the foul in the 'box' results in an indirect free kick being awarded. No confusion intended.LOL

Penalty = a foul in the penalty box

free kick is a foul anywhere else
i wasnt really concerned with those specifics, moreover
i am amazed now that we want to keep a striker that more often
than not sprays shots like that, may as well call him nik porter
or nik hutcho (except for the occasional rocket)

Calling a free kick ....a penalty, is like calling Football...soccer.

Please don't do it as its gay bra.

What amazes me is why you would bring someone on at 90+2 and expect him to do the job. I suspect even Beckham would have trouble with that scenario. What was wrong with Pedj having a go?

Not only that, but Mrdja has no skill/accuracy just power.. which has benefits but not enough when we lack goalscorers... Mrdja out! Youth Striker in!
