That would be an interesting 'back to the future' setup:
Izzo
Roux McGing Poscoliero Rose
Monty
Ferreira Austin
Fitzy
Heffernan O'Donovan
Ostensibly your suggestion appears to be a diamond 4 - 4 - 2, but squint your eyes and it's also/or can be a 4 - 1 - 3 - 2.
Walmsley made it clear pre-season that he was relinquishing the tenure of season's previous where we were predominantly playing with the 2 holding defensive midfielders- Hutch and Monty, and wanting to bring about this new 'attacking philosphy' using just the one DM.
Posco showed some promise in that role whilst Monty was recovering from injury in those pre-season games, he tried Ascroft there as well in the the last psgame, the Fans Day 11v11.
Walmsy also wants 3 up front 'pressing' opposition, this means that the 2 AM's Fitz/Cac sit in behind those 3.
It's essentially a 4-3-3, with the front 3 being (or meant to be) 'flat/in a line' whilst the middle 3 aren't 'flat/in line', but instead are an inverted/ or up-side down triangle.
This is creating a problem around Monty or more importantly in front of him as the distance between him and the 2 AM's is too great, creating a hole.
It's whats leaving us vulnerable on the counters, proven by one of our CB's 'rushing out' from his 'devensive line' position (leaving an attacker behind that was next to him also) to shut down players coming forward either side of Monty when he's central.
Posco is the biggest culprit of doing this. He gets beaten and McGing is on his own or maybe with either Roux or Rosey at times if he's lucky. But their being found out to be be too far forward many a time & too many times together
being too far forward at the same time!
Posco has a 'fail' & we have the situations where McGing is by himself with Roux scrambling back to help him - coincidentally
on Roux's far post side ...... the side where we're 'shipping' the goals.
I've yet to 'really' witness the
press by all of our front 3, in a co-ordinated way.
Roy tries, but opposition CB's are just slipping sideway balls to the other CB and/or so on to their L/Rbacks and Fab and Austin aren't there cutting off or shutting down quick enough (coordinated press) ........& the opposition are getting 'out' by having time to play a good mid or long range pass.
I think we can remedy this and kill a few other birds with just a slight change to the 4 - 1 - 3 - 2 formation.
Roy & Heff both upfront hounding and keeping constant press. on the 2 CB's.
Austin - (Caceres or Fitz) - Fab as the next line of three behind them looking to pressure the L&R backs, with the middle player of our 3 (Cac/Fitz) pressuring oppositions DM.
Were essentially defending or
'pressing' the opposition from playing out with a 'pack of 5 yellow players'. Hoping to cause a turn-over or forcing them to play 'hurriedly' longer balls into the spaces either side of Monty ....... which
will NOW
be occupied by our L&R Backs creating 'a flat 3' .... Rosey - Monty - Roux.
So in defence, during the press ONLY, we
become a 2- 3 - 3 -2 formation. 2 lines in the middle third marking tightly and Roy & Heff pressuring
hard like cattle-dogs.
"This Tony would finally let me see that 5 MINS of FURY that you spoke about in the Kendall Bar pre-game of Rnd1 that you promised we'd see when ever we lost the ball and tried to recover it back......I'm still eagerly waiting with baited breath"
Yes it leaves us with
just the x2 CB's, but they will keep a high line, working the offside trap for the really long balls, which if are straight our Keeper? should keep in czech
by sweeping. If the long balls are diagonals then the nearest CB goes out to pressure and keep it near the sideline whilst Monty slips into the 'backline' to help the lone CB with the far post LRBack going with Monty or tracking a far post attacking run.
The nearer post LRBack either helps the CB that went wide by picking up whichever opposition player is nearest to the player which the ball carrier can pass to, either playing-back up the line or into the corner of the 18 yrd box which is predominantly the 2 options attacking players
only have when they are pressurred out wide near the the side-line or corner-flag area's in our back 3rd.
This formation with this structure/ tactics can help us continue with the 'attacking/entertaining' mindset that TW
wants to play but isn't quite delivering because of our defensive vulnerability.
It gives us 4 lines when 'pressing' the opposition trying to play out, and if we compress our lines by playing a
modest high line (not on halfway
) it could
give us our cake AND WE GET TO EAT IT!
