I have to say, I think that was the worst we have played so far in the league this season. Having said that, we settled in defence and still showed the intent. My biggest gripe is the last 15 minutes, we had the Nux on the ropes up till we scored, then we looked as if we were scared to lose the point and started to sit back more. This saw the Nux have more time and chances in that last 15 than they had in the rest of the 2nd half. I know alot of people dont rate him but I think we missed Fitzy yesterday, L. Rose was invisible for the time he was on and we also struggled out wide after Ferriera and Austin were replaced. things are starting to come together and next week will be a BIG test (hopefully a full team out on the park).
Don't necessarily agree about us sitting back to protect the draw, I think it was more the 'Nix suddenly realising they had to go for a win instead of protecting the lead. I was impressed in our defence not shipping a late loser.

I also thought posco was immence .
I don't believe he should be move from centre back.
right back is the problem child , but I believe we lose more if he's moved.
posco's distribution has been alot better than anyone else in this position.

mark rudin showed what a bling stooge he is last week , claming
simon was better to lead the line than "the paddy"
he has 3 goals in 5 games . Letting simon go was the correct decision .
rudin has no crediblity as a football "expert" , his lack of understanding
should raise a flag to anyone that would want to take him on as an a-league manager.

now taking on the above quotes it seems with Fabs injury the solution could be that Roux could play in his position(he never is in a defending position anyway)
and Ascroft takes his?

Is Ferreira actually injured? I thought he was just cramping up badly... It was the weather for it...

Heh, becoming a CCM thing this though isn't it? - Give us a fullback and we'll make a winger off him ;)

I thought we could have changed tactically when Fabio went off (he wasnt adding much tbf).

Bringing Bingham onto the right wing was odd as he isnt/hasnt/wont ever be a wide player and we started to look very unbalanced.

Would a 442 diamond have worked better?
Couldnt help but feel this also, he looked out of place out there, particularly w

Our passing game seemed to be a little off yesterday compared to previous weeks but we dominated the game.

We are doing a great job at getting in behind teams and the crosses are good but we are struggling to challenge and were not picking up the second ball at all.

Caceras should really be the player around the top of the box with Rose but both were missing a bit yesterday. Caceras work rate/reading was a little off.

For all our attacking as well Roy does a great job of holding the ball when we hit him but again we can be slow to support him, the wingers and 10 need to be a little closed to him.

Monty was absolutely immense, seemed to go to a another level when the rain came in. It could be a big issue if he gets injured/suspended.

Still an awful lot to like again though and defence did look a lot better, bad pass from Josh Rose opened us up.

Bring on Newcastle.

I might be one of a few. But I love Roux. I have always thought he was one of our best on ball after maybe Bozanic and prob a few others. He starts so much down the right has a great engine and more often than not his passes hit the mark. I understand there have been a few goals shipped in these first few rounds. I still think by the time the second round comes by that we will be in the swing of our new game, which really needs that understanding of how to defend while using this style. I think defensively yesterday was a great step forward, agree with those who say that back four should be starting back four each week.

Passing WAS off yesterday and not like we have been used to this year. I know we created a lot, though a lot more genuine chances fell apart early due to a poor final pass. All in all happy with this team and I am loving this season so far and not least because we still have so much improvement in us.

Good job TW and team

RIGHT...now that i've dried out....that was alright wasnt it, sure we didnt win, BUT we didnt lose and the boys were using the sides as their own private sprint track...how fast is The Flash and The Archer?...they were blurring past Nux players at will....Cac, McGing, Rose The Elder , Posco and Stormy (for the most part) done pretty good jobs...Bingers dug straight in when he came on, unlike Heff, who looked a bit over awed from Bay 17...and if Roy keeps this up, his gonna get a golden boot.....the bloody referee , Beath The Pedantic, hasnt improved any ..he was nearly as annoying as the cretin last week

I think its fair too say that the boys are gelling more and more, we should be giving the Fox Sports tipsters gut aches in a few weeks....Scummers next week...wouldnt be surprised if we roll them

I thought that Roux along with Fabio were our real outlet this week. I don't mind the idea about Roux moving into Fabio's spot as a trial but he will only succeed with good service.
Montgomery got better when Liam Rose went off and our shape changed. I am happy for Liam to keep getting game time as he is a good talent and needs to keep playing at this level to improve.
I actually think that playing two up front actually helped the midfield as there was less sideways passing. But without Monty it would be horrible.
Heffernan didn't really impress me but I don't think he really had too much service in the time he was on.

I agree with the comment re Liam Rose. I didn`t realize he was on either until the second half.
Also, Recky your comments re: Beath are well founded. Roy`s yellow card was a disgrace . He wouldn`t have even seen the Nix player, as the defender came from behind him.

On the subject of Ferriera, he would have to be in the top 3 most fouled players in the league. No wonder he struggles to complete games.
I would however, like to see him switch with Austin now & then.
I think the pair of them would benefit from having some time coming inside defenders & getting some shots in.

.

Good call - both are very one-footed and it was frustrating to see them either lose the ball getting the ball back to the dominant foot or sending in a soft shot.

Austin needs to work on that 'dribble at pace', had an elephants touch with one particular run.

Have noticed he's developing a 'give it a slightly heavy touch forward' then eat up the space between him and the ball, he rinses then repeats. ALL straight line stuff, DOWN his LINE.

Defenders are going to start cluing on to this rythm and just time their lunge for an easy 'over the line' tackle and 'out'.

Will credit Austin for dropping further back against Wellington than previous games and supporting Rosey with defensive duties.

Your no use to anyone if your just 'fast' going forward & 'slow or no-go' at getting back.

Yep, he gave up one ball that looked like an over-excited 12yo letting the ball get away from him.

Contrary to others it seems, I actually think Heff looks very promising and that we were clearly a lot more dangerous having such a strong physical presence alongside Roy. He takes up good positions, is calm but still physical, and showed a couple of very nice touches. I'd wager good money that with more game time he'll bag his fair share if given the chance.

I think with Fab out this would be a perfect time to shift Fitz wide and start Heff alongside Roy in a 442.

Also noted that this game in particular Merrick heavily man marked Cac - which I believe is why he wasn't able to assert himself - not because he was drifting mentally or anything. (Walmsley needs to sacrifice Fitz to do this on Mooy next time we play City - and on McKay next time we play Roar imo)

It's a sign of the healthy respect growing in him from the other teams and looks a new challenge for him. Big fan of the way class players like Perez as a CCM example - ghost around, always moving, always presenting, always at hand. Agree that I wouldn't mind Cac staying closer to Roy and the top of the box. With such pacey wingers and a single striker, it means we're too often not getting enough bodies into the box early. They do arrive, but it's usually after the ball has been crossed to low odds of anyone being on the end of it, or needing to hold it up for too long as the only other option is being well marked by two players.

Thought Roy was excellent and that was a fantastic finish.

Rosey is clearly still short a yard because of his injury, but should come good soon.

Little worried about the pace of our game being synonymous with the hammy injuries we're seeing.

And yeah, how good was Monty. Played like 2 men. Both a 5 and a 10 really.

A -League – Tactical Analysis – Wellington Phoenix 1 Central Coast Mariners 1
A-LEAGUE
NICK AMIES

Roy O’Donovan scored his second goal of the season as the Central Coast Mariners came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with Wellington Phoenix.
The Phoenix hit the lead after just eight minutes, pouncing on a wayward pass from Josh Rose to set up former Mariner Michael McGlinchey to score at his old stomping ground.
However, the Phoenix only looked dangerous on the break and ceded the majority of possession and field position to the Mariners. The home side were relentless in their approach, peppering the penalty area with crosses and corners until Roy O’Donovan secured an equaliser in the 76th minute.

A return to parity sparked a late resurgence for the Phoenix amidst the continued pressure of the Mariners, but despite a handful of good chances for both sides the scores remained unchanged until fulltime.
The result does little to help either side on the table, but halts a run of three straight losses for the Mariners. Ernie Merrick will no doubt be disappointed by his team’s poor showing in the second half, but the point will be welcomed after last week’s thrashing at the hands of Melbourne Victory.

Formations
Tony Walmsley continued his commitment to the attacking structure used from the start of the season. Last week’s defeat saw a slight variation on the system though, with Liam Rose joining Nick Montgomery and Anthony Caceres in central midfield instead of Nick Fitzgerald. Rose continued his run in the first team against Wellington, occupying a deeper midfield position next to Montgomery behind Caceres. Nick Fitzgerald was shifted out to the left flank last week due to Liam Rose’s selection, but his subsequent red card allowed Mitch Austin to return to the starting side against the Phoenix.
Austin and Ferreira have been crucial to the Mariner’s attacking impetus and the plan was the same on Sunday, give the ball to these two against the Wellington fullbacks and wreak havoc. With fullbacks Storm Roux and Josh Rose offering support, the home side would have plenty of opportunities to create overloads out wide.
However, counter-attacks have been damaging to the Mariners’ defence this season and Wellington possessed more than enough players to offer a threat on the break. Speedsters Roy Krishna and Jeffrey Sarpong started up front, with dynamic midfielders Michael McGlinchey and Roly Bonevacia sitting in behind. Alex Rodriguez made a start in the holding midfield role next to Albert Riera due to Vince Lia’s injury while Justin Gulley made a surprise start at right back after Thomas Doyle was ruled out with a slight knock.

Counter-attack costs Central Coast
Much has been made of the relative inexperience of the Mariners’ defensive line in the early rounds of the season, but it was veteran fullback Josh Rose who cost his side a goal in the opening minutes. Rose’s errant pass saw his side turn over the ball near halfway with very little defensive cover. From there it took a matter of seconds for the ball to reach Michael McGlinchey inside the Mariner’s penalty area, where the New Zealand international delivered a clinical finish.
However, this was not an isolated incident in the first half. Following on from Rose’s poor turnover, fellow defenders Jake McGing and Storm Roux brought unnecessary pressure on their goal due to errant passes out from the bacl. Whether it was a case of a lack of options for passing or poor technique, situations like that need to be eradicated from the team. The early goal gave too much of an early advantage to the Phoenix, forcing the Mariners to commit more players going forward as they pushed for an equaliser. There were several occasions where the Phoenix were given the numerical advantage on the counter-attack in the second period, but luckily for the home side they failed to properly take advantage of the situation.

Quantity of quality
Although the Phoenix did take an early lead and looked dangerous in patches, the Mariners gradually eased into complete control of possession and field position. As they searched for an equaliser the home side delivered a barrage of crosses in order to find a solitary goal. Roy O’Donovan eventually produced the goods in the 76th minute after rising highest to a corner from Anthony Caceres, but in the end the Mariners ran out of time to find a winner, despite their dominance of possession.
The final scoreline is surprising when you look at the final statistics. Central Coast outshot their opponents 17 to eight, but only had four find the target compared to the Phoenix’s three. This also featured 47 crosses, while their opponents managed just ten. With those sorts of numbers, questions surely have to be raised about both the quality of these deliveries and whether or not there was a sufficient number of players making an effort to get on the end of these crosses.

Central Coast Mariners Conclusion
The past two weeks have seen remarkable improvement despite less than impressive results. The decision to rebalance the midfield with Liam Rose has certainly benefitted Tony Walmsley’s side, it’s now a question of removing individual errors from the backline and improving the quality of the final ball in attack.

Wellington Phoenix Conclusion
After starting competitively the Phoenix were overrun in the middle of the park, an imbalance not solely caused by the absence of Vince Lia. Roly Bonevacia and Michael McGlinchey faded in and out of the action far too often, limiting their side’s ability to control any meaningful possession.
