Central Coast's attack: from pop gun to powerful

It might only be one game into the new Hyundai A-League campaign but skipper Nick Montgomery is adamant there’ll be no repeat of Central Coast’s pop-gun attack in Season 11.
The Mariners endured a challenging 2014/15 season, struggling for goals as they found the net just 26 times in their 27 matches.

It was a focus of coach Tony Walmsley all pre-season to instil more punch to the side and give them more of a goal-scoring threat.

And the early signs are encouraging as the pro-active Mariners carved out a 15 shots on goal, seven on target, scoring three times in the win over Perth Glory last Sunday in Round 1.

Star winger Fabio Ferreira in particular impressed with an 80% shooting accuracy from his five shots on goal (he also scored both penalties).

For new skipper Montgomery, he loves what he’s seen so far and even though the shot accuracy was 46.7% against Glory, he's confident of more goals to come.

“We’ve definitely got more attacking players this season than we had last season,” the Englishman told www.a-league.com.au.

“I think last season we struggled to score goals, we didn’t have a great squad in terms of striking options but this season we brought in Roy O’Donovan, who’s played at the highest level in the Premier League in England.

“He’s got goals in him as well as Fabio [Ferreira], Fitzy [Nick Fitzgerald], [Anthony Caceres] players like that.

“We’re in a good shape and for me it’s more of a case of just organising the team and making sure we’re hard to beat.”

New striker O’Donovan opened his account - perhaps fortuitously – in the 3-2 win over Glory and Montgomery says the Irishman has been a major acquisition for the club.

“He’s a striker with a wealth of experience and he’s still at a good age,” the skipper said.

“He’s hungry for goals.

”We’ve bought up a lot of young boys too. Jack McGing at centre-half has come in and done a fantastic job.”

In his fourth season at the club, Montgomery feels a part of the furniture in Gosford now and is relishing the opportunity to captain the club, taking the reins from the retired John Hutchinson.

“It’s a great honour to captain any club, especially a great club like the Mariners,” Motgomery said.

“Taking over from Hutch was some big boots to fill, he did a fantastic job but to be honest it’s made it easy for me. I’ve just carried on the same thing I’ve done the last three years under Hutch.

“I want to lead by example on and off the pitch, help the young boys and generally just keep the club going the way it has the last 10 years.

“We’ve got some young players in and we’re create a new squad. It’s exciting times ahead.”

The Mariners will look to maintain their 100 percent record when they take on fellow first-round winners Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

I think Rosie on the bench is, perhaps, the most obvious choice in the entire lineup (except perhaps for Monty & Fab starting ;) ) - assuming that he doesn't mind the role that is... By now he has proven himself to, at a minimum, be adequate in three roles, LW, LB and CB... He's our only natural cover at LB, I think he did pretty well at CB on several occasions last season and he's certainly been worthwhile at LW - at this point he's almost the perfect bench warmer ;) I can see the merit of starting him on LW and using Austin as an impact player, but if Austin keeps going the way he did on the weekend, it seems like a waste of talent... Better then, to ensure that Rosie is rested to play at full speed, the last 30-or-so, in whichever role he is needed.
On top of that, I actually thought that the changes changes, against Perth, was part of the problem... I swear we looked less stable after Bosnar came on... Might just be me obviously ;)

I probably agree with you re Rosey but Ascroft is inexperienced and it may be risky to blood him against the Roar.
I don't think the problem was bringing Eddy on but rather taking Monty off.
I can see the appeal (to Tony) in starting Rosey (pace wise) but apparently Bosnar was in good pre-season form and id probably give him the start.

Much as I try I just can't see us winning this one. Ben Williams certainly doesn't build my confidence either.

Hoping for a nice surprise, but I reckon 2-1 to the meow.

"Few tipped them to beat Perth last weekend but they won 3-2 while also showcasing Walmsley's new attacking game plan.
"If you look at the stats for the whole round, we had more entries into the opponent's penalty area and more shots than anyone else," he (Walmsley) said.
"For the first game, you've got to say big tick for the performance, big tick for the intent and ambition and boldness.
"Let's tread cautiously now. I don't mean that in the sense we're going to be more cautious against Brisbane.
"I mean tread cautiously before we start raving too quickly about how good we are. We've got a lot of work to do."
The Mariners have lost defender Jacob Poscoliero for a week due to a hamstring injury, with Eddy Bosnar or Josh Rose set to replace him at centre-back."

“Our job on Saturday is to make Brisbane incredibly uncomfortable on their own patch and if we do that and we take out chances it could be a great afternoon.”

Oho. Will be no trouble freaking them out on Saturday but it's Sunday that matters.

Same side as last week apart from Ascroft in for Posco.
Izzo, Boz, Rosey,Rosey Jr, and Kalik on the bench. Would have Rosey in but feel Mitch has momentum . It would send the wrong message to drop players after they have taken their chance. Competition is a good thing.
I have absolutely no clue what will happen Sunday but hoping for another 3-2. They will score so hoping we get more.

austin's pace will unsettle every side the lads play against .
he could well exhaust the roar's defence so the lads can steal it late

TW playing mind games already.
I love it....

I`m thinking the gaffer would have had a good look at the Roar in our preseason game & has watched their opener a few times already.
With Posco out & Ascroft in we may be a little underdone at the back especially with Broich loitering around looking for opportunities.
Monty & Stormy may have to give him a few touch ups in the centre of the park.

With Fab & Austin getting down the flanks we just might have the speed to get in behind their defenders, so we`ll need Roy to have a belter if we`re to win.

My tip 2-1 up in a boil-over.

This is my main concern - I thought Posco looked excellent last weekend - compared to last season for example. He seemed to have a comfort and control that he didn't last year, so I worry a little how we'll go with a potential all-new lineup in the middle at the back... But let's see :)

Haven't Ascroft & McGing played together in some of the pre-season matches? If they have, not really all-new. All-new to full competition though, I see your point.

2-4

We cant/won't keep them scoreless and we have a few in us.

More interested to see how we play away and not expecting too much as long as they all put in a shift for 90 mins
