R5 - Mariners v Roar: Return of the Mc

McBreen was not the problem for me & why not start him. Golden boot from last season & just had a decent run in China. None of our other attackers have been as successful as him in the last 12 months.

PS... Why the heck was McBreen starting? He hasn't hardly had a week of training with the boys and he's starting huh??? Flores and McBreen didn't look good together at all.

. exactly ... but it wasn't just flores (although he was the most obvious). mcbreen has had very little time with any of the three playing behind him ... and i don't just mean the last week - plus, any time spent with dukie and fitzy they were playing different roles

. to me, it doesn't say a lot about what arnie thinks of matty ... whether it's fitness, skill or attitude i don't know

. i know it is uncool to criticise arnie but i reckon he needs to shoulder some of the blame here too - i think he simply got some of his selections wrong

In the press conference Arnie said the main issue is mobility. I think he is totally right. We seems to get cornered way to often with no passing outlets.

Our CBs were stranded most of the time and when we passed to the wing we were forced into passes passes back to the centre which caused turnovers.

At least Arnie knows the problem. Lets hope he has a solution.

. mobility is the easy answer ... i think the underlying issue is confidence - confidence in those around you and confidence in 'knowing' what they are going to do.

. 'mobility' on its own is not the problem, there was plenty of ineffective energy being consumed. second guessing or 'playing safe' is leaving players poorly positioned and helps nobody

. oh and brisbane gave us no time on the ball ... interestingly if we had have played like brisbane i think people would be praising how well we pressured them into turning the ball over

IMO Brisbane totally out through us... they read our plays and we struggled for many parts of the game....

Reddy as has been said was best on park... they are my pick at this stage as the best team in the league... MM has done a great job...

Our midfield only has three top draw players in Monty, weeMac & Marco ...

This could be a difficult year ... MV / Roar / Drive Bys, with Scum improving and SFC getting players back from injury...

BrisRecky

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
dire..Dire...DIRE...absolute shite...BUT Reddy was fkn brilliant...as much as that pains me to say, got to give him cudos for a job well done...

we got no attack, bugger all cohesion in defence and the boys are occasionally playing like they met each other on thursday avo...In Bay 17 yesterday ,Oz Baggie mentioned the "Champions Curse" having arrived ...he might be onto something

I just read Arnies spray re: that sanctimonious fkn dickhead, numbnut, Ben Williams ....I was cleaning my glasses when that handball happened AND I COULD SEE IT...these fkn refs are giving me ulcers...sort 'em out Gallop

Time to stop bitching about the bloke (me included) because the man wearing the gloves for 90m was fantastic. great reaction saves & the one that got through his legs he stopped enough for the Trent to save our bacon. The goal didn't appear to be anything to do with him but a bad defensive read & great through ball.

. that is neither easy or simple. it's a bit like suspecting somebody has been bullying your kids but you haven't been able to do anything about it, now that bully is in their sport team ... regardless of how well they may play, you are never going to feel comfortable supporting them

. although i have to admit i did applaud some of his work yesterday ... and i was full of self loathing for doing so

. i still would have given justin another chance. we will never know whether he would have played better or worse than reddy (from my position, only watching live, i thought he may have been poorly positioned for the goal)

. of course reddy's confidence would have been higher than justin's in training - he knew this was his biggest chance and justin was right to take (most of) the responsibility for last week's goal. but dropping him could shatter his confidence ... something the whole team is struggling with i reckon ... can you imagine his state of mind if he has to come on?

Fitzy - Doesn't like defending tackling, did a good job getting back in 1st half getting back but had TWO 50/50 TACKLES AND PULLED OUT OF BOTH - UNFORGIVEABLE!.

. noticed that too ... although i modified your post a little. so timid he seemed scared ... and the opposition may start to give him a bit more 'attention' because of it

. because cohesion has been such a problem for us already

It's frowned upon to slag off Hutcho. I try and be positive.
I actually like the bloke so pointing out his obvious flaws doesn't help with the formation Arnie is stuck with.

I also like the Hutch and have since his time at Spirit. I found the slagging off at him a couple of seasons ago reprehensible.

However when someone has a bad game I see no problem pointing it out.

Likewise I hated Reddy more than anyone else in the league. This did not stop me saying I thought he was our MOM.

You cannot let your personal feelings or prejudices stand in the way of good judgement.

I am concerned about our slow start. Not just this game but the others as well.

It may take longer than a season to pull a new team together.

Fitzgerald is well below Bozanics standard. He has potential but like 90% of the team he needs to toughen up and wise up.
If you are not willing to work 100% for the full 90....it's bench or reserve time.

Although Arnie needs a kick for some stupid decisions he also needs credit for the decision to pick Reddy. Arnie now needs to show the same ruthlessness and we can start winning again.

Liam Reddy had a good game.
Flores was missing.

I don't think Flores went missing. I think McKay marked him out of the game.

Brisbane has for four seasons now been the best pressing team in the comp. More often than not they had three players shutting down our one.
Pretty awesome to be fair and we simply couldn't deal with it. For mine, they have always been the only team as fit or fitter than us. Very frustrating to watch.

It's not the forwards fault, without Weemac, just no one else bar duke and Flores who had any hope of being able to hold the ball up under that kind of pressure. In which circumstance I think you have only two real options...

Play through them if you're good enough, or play direct. We are certainly not direct - and when we tried it was with or formation a lone striker in 3 V 1 at the back. And we weren't good enough to play through them - 2DM's, poor showing by Fitzy, and the loss of two ball to feet players in Weemac and Storm certainly did not serve in this - and meant once they closed down Flores, we could not hold possession and could not build and ultimately generated very little going forward.

I agree with Wombat. Runs must be better, Players must present. Passes must be accurate, and the ball had to be moved much quicker and more consistently forward. We miss Dutchy's raking passes and switch of play big time. You also simply have to take men on who scream in to press you all the time.... but you have to have the feet to do it... Rosey showed what had to be done I thought.

On the bright side, I'm sure Arnie and Mossy are working very hard already to amend all these things - so I'm not rattled at all like some. Also a good crowd. And active support was outstanding.

On the darker side, that performance. However while we were squarely beaten, for mine Roar are clearly the best team in the comp, and we are nowhere near 100%

Interesting from the game. No one around me has a problem with what happened to him at Sydney. Simply the stomping at Newcastle.

Maybe if he did that to the gyppo or ADP and/or apologises, he might break down a few barriers.

. this is why it is so frustrating to continually hear from the likes of arnie and lawrie, that ... "if it wasn't for the trip to wellington he would still be the no. 1 at sydney" (which is probably bullshit anyway)

. i think they hope that if they say that enough and state how he is a changed man and knows it is his last chance that everybody will forget about the other 'issues' ... they have already laughed off the matty/reddy issue. maybe they need to consider - and address - the issue that fans are still so hung up about

. oh and by all means, if he acts unprofessionally again ... don't even wait for the plane to land before you kick him off
