R27: Mariners vs Newcastle

Hyphen had a super game. He's improved immensely this season.

On another note - gloves or technique?

No doubting Matty Ryan is a class goalie. That save last night was right out of the top drawer. But the number of 'dropsies' is a concern. Get that out of his game and he'd give me less heart attacks.

Granted it was a wet slippery ball, but...

Not being a goalie, I wonder if it's a technique issue that can be worked on, or he needs to buy a different brand of gloves.

Thoughts?

ps. Major congrats to Matt and the defence (whole team really) for the record 12th clean sheet. Three more please!

Maty Ryan's save was amazing. No wonder he was named in a-league's team of the season.

As for the 'dropsies' I'm sure it was the conditions because Maty rarely slips like that and even as a youth player would never drop saves like last night

If Knights FC, sorry Jets, wish to consider themselves the Barca of the A-League, good luck to them. Nothing wrong with aiming high. But on current form, both on the field and off, my point is that it is mighty pretentious, bordering on the ridiculous.

Who said that they wish to consider themselves the Barca of the A-League? I think it was you, not them. So you're branding them pretentious with what you think are their reasons, without taking on board the justifiable reasons provided to assume the colours and strips.

So where is the pretentousness if they have not stated it, and is it not presumptious of you to label them so with proof to the contrary? Is no one free to have blue and red stripes withoput being labelled pretentious? Thats the point I'm making to you. To Phoenix its another point altogether in regards to IP law.

You have seen the colours and (fair enough) made a connection as most football followers will do. But most football followers is not who this is aimed at. Take your blinkers off and see the wider picture from a business mans point of view in regards to brand recognition. Remember the Our Town Our Team promotion for the Knights? Red and Blue everywhere? Don't be surprised if gets another run with the Jets as focal point.

Was delighted to see Arnie out on the paddock thanking the fans after the match. Good stuff.
Also was wrapped in the whole team going along high-5ing the yellow army and the guys beside them. Was it Arnie who pointed them that way, or Dutchy? Whoever, it was great to see them being recognised after doing their thing in driving rain all match.

Dutchy's been awesome all season in thanking the supporters after the match. Quite often he is last off the pitch. Perez is good too. I'm glad to see their respect for the fans is rubbing off on the rest of the team... or it could be that Dutchy doesnt like Arnie's post-match speech :piralaugh:

agreed was good to see. I'm fairly sure it was arnie and mcbreen who got them to walk around

Arnie sent the boys round there which was good. Also maybe the reasons Dutchy and Perez are so good with the fans is that they come from footballing countries where they would have grown up living and breathing football so truly understand football fans.

I'm with Scotty Mac on this one!
I was suprised back in 2005, to not see the Jets in Red and Blue. I know in an ideal world it would be great to have a football club independent to footy (wat a lot of their fans are complaining of), but for the future, some clubs will need to be interdependent!
I think AT BEST the stripes which are similar to that of Barca could be a Secondary angle by the Jets Mgt. But make no mistake (in fact it is laughable to suggest this) that it could the primary reason! Red and Blue is simply to unite the region, and a great idea tbh!
It will be awkward seeing people wearing Knights jerseys to football matches (moreso than the odd 1 here or there)...but if it increases fans, if it increases exposure- then hats off to Tinkler!

I don't think there is any mystery over why they've chosen the new strip:

1) Linking with the Knight Thuggery Club
2) Copy catting a super Club
3) Distancing from Constantine's urine colours

I thought that has been echoed by just about every forum, based on the new strip. And I doubt the Club would deny it any of it.

And what's all this crap about proof? This a forum of opinions, not a f**king courtroom.

If the target is purely non-football followers, why have a copy cat Barca strip? There are many other blue\red strip designs that would give the Club a unique identity.

And why on earth would football want to be associated with a bogan, drug sniffing, wife beating, rapists league? Oh, point taken. We are talking about Newcastle here.

As for a businessman's POV on brand recognition, how is that served by confusing four clubs and two codes identities - Jets, Knights, Barca, Toon FC, football and eggball?

As for red and blue everywhere - you've either got to be kidding, or having a serious memory lapse, or were born later than 2000. That's been tried before and look what happened.

Do you seriously think that aligning with the Knights is a good thing? That horrific possibility is a key reason that carloads of Newcastle football fans from the pre-Constantine days trek down to Gosford and up from Sydney to follow the Mariners.

As Holger Osieck recently said, the A-League should stand on it's own merits if it claims to be a serious league.

Anyway, as this is not the Jets forum, I'm done.

The inferiority complex with Rugby League really is tiresome.

It's not a threat, the way it's spoken about here is really quite sad and on the same page quite hypocritical too.

The Mariners and Bears could be fantastic allies if the latter is admitted to the NRL, just as the Knights and Jets could be up the road.

It's forbidden to follow both codes, didn't you know Tim?

Substance abuse, alcoholism, acts of violence and sexual misconduct never happen in professional football anywhere around the globe. Surely you must know that!

Commercially they're rivals. Any dollar spent on one is a dollar not spent on the other. But then, Radiohead and Muse are too. I like both, I like one a lot more.

Meh! I just hate Thugby League.

As well as that I don't think it will work out well for football - too much evidence.

Aussie Rules and Rugby I can almost appreciate, but sorry ... NRL - leave me out!

(assuming you're talking about NRL v HAL) ... Commercially they're hardly rivals - taking place at different times of the year means they're not competing for concurrent sponsor dollars or airtime (definitely not from next season, anyway).

This is going to be a long off-season if we don't win the Championship :(

Not quite sure I understand why.

If you read headlines and don't bother reading stories I probably understand (the headline on most NRL stories is designed to draw the reader in, whereas the truth is often wildly different). Otherwise, I find AFL far worse, difference being that in NSW we just don't hear about the disgraceful stuff they do.

Most pathetic derby thread ever. :redcard:

We screwed the Jest good...effing awesome...just what Mariners dreams are made of :pirashoot: :eek:verhead:

Somehow, the thread has been hijacked by a pissing contest about the new Jest strip. Who gives a flying f**k about their strip when so much more happened at the game which is in fact what this thread is about. Besides, there's a separate thread for the pissing contest.

Bloody hell, we just sent them home crying outside the club in a chanting sea of yellow...it was beautiful to watch almost brings a tear to my eye :eek:verhead:

Sure, a derby win is always great, but their season was already over before the kick-off. Boxing Day '08 was much, much sweeter- we sounded the death knell on their Championship defence, on their home turf. As far as the derby goes, Sunday's game was a bit meh in comparison, neither teams' fate depended on the draw, and many of us have been thinking of Brisbane since beating GCU on Wednedsay night.

Good post Bex. Fair rant. My second post did say back to the important stuff!
But its done now, so I will respond briefly - but be sure to keep it in my pants ;)

Scottmac, being aware of potential IP pitfalls around some of my own areas of business, I simply thought it would likely apply in such an instance as the proposed strips, knowing large companies and brands spend a lot of money to protect them. Looking into it though, when it comes to football strips, your right and my idle speculation, which is all it was, is wrong.

Your point was clearly made, but to be honest, you do seem a little overkill with the total horse shit and all the... "Too far" stuff to me - as I certainly don't think there's some delicate moral line at stake here, or anything much at stake at all really? But maybe I'm just misreading your tone. Thats cool. I can be wrong about that too ;D

The remains of my opinion do remain though. <_<
Where you think its a stretch to assume the deliberate link, I feel it's a stretch to assume they would not have been choosing such iconic world football looks consciously and deliberately, as opposed to just irrespectively or coincidentally.

As said I don't have any issue with that and actually think its another good move by Tinkler for the Jets as I've posted on other forums. But I'm also certainly not interested in thread hijacking or a pissing contest as the tone of some of the banter has left others users thinking it has become.

Soooo... it's back to those Might Mariners! :eek:verhead:

:innocent:
