R27: Mariners vs Newcastle

Start the first string team and put the youngsters on as needed i.e. yellows cards, hack marks from frustrated Jest players, etc.

Red & blue - yes. But never in a Barca strip with their shade of red\blue.
Why assume they're copying Barca? Tinkler is trying to buy the Knights RL club, who run around in red/blue stripes. It is logical to assume they're wanting both teams in the same colours. Tinkler probably couldn't give a stuff about Barca, if he's even heard of them.

Obviously you've not seen their new strip.

Agree with you about the Knights connection, but the strip is pure Barca and not the Knights. Different red\blue entirely. The new away strip is pure Newcastle United (UK) too.

It would make sense of the Jets had formed an alliance with these Clubs, but as far as I know they haven't.

Wow we've got to take our chances and put games away or we'll pay in the semis / GF. Having said that it was a good, tough hit-out in difficult conditions for a game with nothing to play for.

Crowd was absolutely electric tonight. There was a buzz in the air even pre-game. Should be even better for the semi next week!

I hate the jest as much as the next person but your taking it a bit too far. You too Kev.

As said previously on these boards Tinkler has made it a policy for the teams he owns to wear the same colour. A colour distinctly identifiable as Newcastle. Red and Blue. The mock up for FFA approval may not even be the same shade once applied to the shirt. They have a perfectly justifiable reason for wearing this colour. To assume they are copying Barca is just weird. The people they are aiming this at probably dont even know who Barca are so the similarity will be lost on them.

As for the black and white it has been said that they are the traditional colours of football in Northern NSW. The Newcastle United strip has more stripes than this one any way, so to me thats another huge leap to think they are copying it.

Tinkler has done his homework and I for one think he is spot on the money with these 2 strips. Engage the broader Newcastle community by having the team instantly identifiable as being from Newcastle and appeal to the Northern
NSW football community who have not yet joined in to support the club. Both very valid reasons for the kit changes and much more believable than your call of copycat.

This evening the club released a statement cinfirming the new designs are currently with the FFA awaiting approval for next season.

"The home strip will feature Newcastle’s recognised colours of red and blue while honouring the Jets six year A-League heritage with gold detail," said the statement.

"The Football Club Advisory Board in consultation with Seniors Players have also selected a Black and White Away strip, the traditional colours of Football in Northern NSW."

The club added: "It is the policy of the Tinkler Sports Group that all sporting teams under the TSG umbrella will have consistent colours starting with the Jets next season.

"Jets supporters should be assured that in the future, in line with the policy that the Tinkler Sports Group has offered Newcastle Knights fans, members approval will be required to change the team name, colours, location or home ground.

"By reverting to both the club and the region's recognised colours, we hope to not only mark the start of an exciting new period for the club but also pay homage to the region’s strong football heritage."

Mmm, while on a personal level, I don't really have any real issue with it, I just can't agree on this one Scottmac,

I understand the colours and history, and see value and sense in Tinkler seeing to unite and strengthen his brands but at the same time, as a football club, they are obviously very aware of the origin of these two particular strips (which they have already brought forward for FFA approval I thought I read?) And we all know that no one who watches football around the world sees anything but the Toon Army and Barca when they look at those strips.

There's no ignoring that, no matter how much anyone waxes lyrical about footballs regional history or looks the other way.
Pointing it out however, just may may help keep IP lawyers at bay?? Which to be honest I think you would need to as these brands are established and certainly iconic - and I know if it was my business I'd definitely be worried about international IP lawyers coming to call.

Anyhow, they obviously know all this and they've still gone ahead with it. So it has to be a pretty damn calculated move of some measure, with surely some perceived benefits or why do it? Still puzzles me...

But to otherwise believe it coincidence that the only options they happened to come up with for their new football strips, just also happened to be A} a carbon copy of arguably the greatest football club. And B} a carbon copy of the worlds leading brand that bares the name of "newcastle" I think thats just pushing the envelope way to far.

For mine I'd be very surprised if FFA approve these strips in this form.

But now there's a thought... surely that would also be well known and considered by them... which means if they still did it anyway... then perhaps this was just the clever way that they thought they could best pitch the new colour change and brand unification that Tinkler feels his brand needs to have. But by doing it this way, working to steer it somewhat away from the obvious backlash re Jets fans only seeing the insulting red and blue strip of the Knights as their new strip, by instead cleverly inking the colours with one of the worlds most powerful football brands?

Not a silly idea in my opinion and far more in line with the smarts of Tinkler I would think...

If you've followed other forums on this it's actually worked too. You have the anti knights, we love our poo TimmyV squadron brigade. But then you also have many other supporters (including some squadron members) all saying, come on it looks great and whats wrong with looking like Barca etc...

Food for thought. I'll be interested to see how this plays out.

And now back to more important matters.

How long is it since the Jets have won a derby agains us now?
:eek:verhead: :eek:verhead: :eek:verhead:

I would also like to re open that, you can't have Perez and Amini on the field at the same time debate. :naughty:

Luck you can or we would not have won.

Musti's cameo was absolutely first class tonight.

That pass from Amini to Rose .... was about the best I have seen in a Mariner shirt... it was top top top draw...

Me thinks .... Perez playing a second striker with Matty & Berine sharing the other striker position and Amini as the number 10 is our best attack...

Hope you put some coin on your call ...

Yeah you could definitely make a lot of coin if you could better on games after they were over MF :p
Check the time on his post ;)

Agree on the quality of that pass though :eek:verhead:
So fantastic to have players like Perez, Musti Olly, Weemac and Rose who really do play some fantastic balls.
1 nil, not our most vintage game, but still some wonderful passages of play and great football to watch.

What a load of horse shit.

Does that stop Juve from wearing black and white stripes? Or many other teams through history?
Or maybe litigation should start over FC Basel and Barca wearing the exactly same kit not once but a couple of times throughout the years?
What about when Leeds admitedly changed their shirt design to mimic Real Madrid?
What about Man U, Liverpool and Adelaide (and I'm sure many others)? Anyone get in a tizz over their all red kits?
How about Hearts red sash? Should the lawyers come out because they copied one of the most identifiable kits in the world in River Plate?
How about Aston Villa, Burnley and West Ham who are not only the same colours and at some stages design but played in the same competitions too.
I could go on and on and on because there are 1000's and 1000's of football clubs around the world, some with exactly the same colours and kits.
You too Phoenix like Celery and Kev, have taken it too far.

well finally one of those late goals at Bluetounge was ours and topped of a good game. Some patchy play where CCM were a class above only to let them back in for a period.
With a bit of (extra) luck we could have been 3 up but I will give a gong to Topor-Stanley who had a super game including that stop on the line.

Get those blinkers off Scottmac.

Why is it that 99% of Jets fans that I have spoken too, without prompting, have said: "We're going to be wearing the Barca and Toon strips".

I agree that there are many clubs that wear copy cat strips around the world. That's not the point I was making.

If Knights FC, sorry Jets, wish to consider themselves the Barca of the A-League, good luck to them. Nothing wrong with aiming high. But on current form, both on the field and off, my point is that it is mighty pretentious, bordering on the ridiculous.

On the positive side, I suppose it's better they align with football than the Knights, even if it is an overseas giant.

+1

Hyphen had a super game. He's improved immensely this season.

On another note - gloves or technique?

No doubting Matty Ryan is a class goalie. That save last night was right out of the top drawer. But the number of 'dropsies' is a concern. Get that out of his game and he'd give me less heart attacks.

Granted it was a wet slippery ball, but...

Not being a goalie, I wonder if it's a technique issue that can be worked on, or he needs to buy a different brand of gloves.

Thoughts?

ps. Major congrats to Matt and the defence (whole team really) for the record 12th clean sheet. Three more please!
